Iron Oxides by Damien Faivre - PDF
نویسندگان: Damien Faivre خلاصه: As the name of the book “Iron oxides: from nature to applications” suggests, iron oxides are not only widespread in the environment, but also widely used by mankind in a variety of applications (Figure 1.1). Both this ubiquitous presence in nature and the utilization as tools have been established for cen- turies and are still valid today. The first illustrative examples of iron oxides certainly are compass needle or rust (Figure 1.2). Iron oxides are present in solid, liquid, and gaseous environments, with respective examples such as rocks, as mineral inclusion in swimming bacteria or in aerosols. Depending on the type of use, several sources of iron oxides exist. Applications range from the heavy steel production to medicine and art. The different aspects of mineral formation and their use as well as modern characterization techniques are reviewed in this book

DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGING AND LITERACY EVENTS IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS - Original PDF
نویسندگان: David Bloome, Stephanie Power-Carter, W. Douglas Baker, Maria Lucia Castanheira, Minjeong Kim, and Lindsey W. Rowe خلاصه: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the use of microethno- graphic discourse analysis for researching, theorizing, and reconceptualizing the uses of language and literacy in educational settings. The authors apply an ethnographic perspective to discourse analysis to emphasize how teachers and students use spoken and written language to construct knowledge, opportunities for learning, and social relationships. The authors demonstrate how micro- ethnographic discourse analysis at different levels of scale can provide deeper understandings into the nuanced, complex social interactions and relationships that exist in and across educational contexts, including meaning-making, lit- eracy practices, power relations, and the social construction of personhood. Each chapter offers philosophically and theoretically grounded principles for using microethnographic discourse analysis and example cases that reflect the principles presented. Ideal for researchers, teacher educators, and teachers, this essential text on discourse analysis, languaging, and literacy provides a ground- ing to further examine critical questions challenging educators.

The United States and Europe, 1964–1975 - PDF
نویسندگان: Stephan Kieninger خلاصه: Détente seemed to prolong the division of Europe. It seemed to make America lose sight of its mission. From the perspective of its critics, détente allowed for the Soviet Union’s arms buildup in the 1970s, and it allegedly precipitated America’s decline in the wake of the Vietnam War. That is the traditional Cold War narrative.1 This book tells a different story though. I argue that the power of dynamic détente policies transformed Europe in the shadow of the military status quo. This study depicts the origins and the implementation of American policies to overcome Europe’s division peace- fully through the kind of dynamic détente that was codified in the Helsinki Final Act of 1975. I emphasize that the transformative effects of the Helsinki Accords had been envisaged since the 1960s: Lyndon Johnson’s bridge build- ing and Willy Brandt’s Ostpolitik were the forerunners for the Helsinki pro- cess. Johnson and Brandt were eager to foster liberalizing changes in Eastern Europe through an expansion of East-West communication. The assumption was that the Communist rules were prepared to open up their systems gradu- ally for freer movement of people, information, and ideas provided that they were granted international security

Economic Crime by Mark Button, Branislav Hock and David Shepherd - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Mark Button, Branislav Hock and David Shepherd خلاصه: In the midst of the summer of 2021, Boris Johnson’s government in the UK published a crime plan (Home Office, 2021). A few days earlier the Office for National Statistics (ONS) had released the latest crime statistics from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). This had shown a 36% increase in fraud and computer misuse offences, which now accounted for the clear majority of crimes – 6.3 million of the 11.1 million estimated crimes (ONS, 2021). One would have expected a flourish of media interest and comment on the plan, particularly as it contained a whole chapter on fraud and online offences, on what the impact on fraud might be. The media, however, were much more interested in other aspects of the plan: “Boris Johnson pledges to target crime and anti-social behaviour” – BBC News “Freed burglars to wear 24-hour tags under Prime Minister’s Crime Crackdown” – Telegraph “Thieves tagged 24-hours a day and crooks forced to clean streets in crime crackdown” – Express

Essentials of Flow Assurance Solids in Oil and Gas Operations Understanding Fundamentals, Characterization, Prediction, Environmental Safety, and Managemen - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Abdullah Hussein خلاصه: ntroduction Oil and gas were formed over millions of years from the dead bodies of plankton (tiny marine organ- isms). These prehistoric dead plankton and their naturally engineered product have dominated and shaped modern times into “the Great Oil Age,” as McKenzie-Brown, Jaremko, and Finch titled their book on the subject [1]. Petroleum shapes our modern times in two main ways: first by serving as the main source of energy, and secondly by being the raw material for thousands of products that play critical roles in modern civilization. Fossil fuels still constitute the major global source of energy, despite the recent advances in renew- able sources of energy. Fossil fuels represent 85% of global primary energy consumption [2,3], with oil remaining as the most used source in the energy mix (33%–34%), as shown in Fig. 1.1. The global consumption of and demand for hydrocarbons (oil and gas) outweigh that of other sources of energy such as coal, nuclear, and renewable energies, due to the fast-growing population and newly emerging technologies. The global energy demand is projected to more than double by 2050 due to the growth in population and economies [4]. The demand for gas is growing faster than the demand for oil, especially in developing countries [5,6]

نویسندگان: Patrick Low, Helen Rutherford, and Clare Sandford-Couch خلاصه: In his diary entry of 23 August 1844 railway clerk Richard Lowry reflected on his attendance the preceding day at the hanging of Mark Sherwood on Newcastle’s Town Moor. Lowry noted that the streets of Newcastle were ‘literally crammed with people’ and that there were ‘countless thousands crowding’ towards the Moor, to witness the spectacle of a public execution. Despite taking up a prime position some ‘20 yards from the gallows’, Lowry was far from a proponent of capital punishment. He reflected: ‘what will future ages say at such barbarous proceedings as this. A time is fast coming when such murder will be no longer perpetrated.’1

HANDBOOK OF COLLABORATIVE PUBLIC MANAGEMENT by Jack Wayne Meek - PDF
نویسندگان: Jack Wayne Meek خلاصه: 1 Introduction: collaborative public management as an emergent field Jack Wayne Meek Collaborative public management (CPM) is now a central area of study (O’Leary and Vij 2012) and practice (McKinney and Johnson 2009; Linden 2010; Agranoff 2012) in public administration. As a field of study, its origins can be traced to public management research in intergovernmental relations. Ground-breaking work in the field came from examining intergovernmental networks (Agranoff 1990; Rhodes 1997; Kickert, Klijn and Koppenjan 1997; Agranoff and McGuire 2003, among others). The study of collaborative public man- agement received focused attention examining various models and typologies in networks (Mandell 2001) and in a 2006 symposium edited by Rosemary O’Leary, Catherine Gerard and Lisa Blomgren Bingham (2006). In 2008, Lisa Blomgren Bingham and Rosemary O’Leary collected works from the third Minnowbrook Conference that emphasized Big Ideas in Collaborative Public Management (Bingham and O’Leary 2008). The status of the field and an assessment of where the field is headed was also provided by Rosemary O’Leary and Nidhi Vij (2012).

Handbook of Research on Promoting Higher- Order Skills and Global Competencies in Life and Work - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jared Keengwe خلاصه: ABSTRACT Critical thinking and other higher-order thinking skills are key objectives of higher education. Through the development of higher-order thinking skills, students are able to discern information from multiple, often competing sources, make sound judgements, draw conclusions, and enact creative solutions to complex problems. However, faculty can struggle with how to help students develop higher-order think- ing skills, relying instead on transmission of knowledge, focusing on what to learn instead of how to learn. In this chapter, the author provides insights into the connections between using gamification as a pedagogical approach, and the development of higher-order thinking skills. The chapter addresses perspectives on higher-ordering thinking, approaches to gamification in college courses, and concludes with recommendations for faculty in approaching gamification
