The Pearl of the East The Economic Impact of the Colonial Railways in the Age of High Imperialism in Southeast Asia - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Dídac Cubeiro Rodríguez خلاصه: During the last decades of the nineteenth century until the 1930s, economic growth in Southeast Asia (we understand Southeast Asia at the end of the nineteenth century: Burma, British colony, Thailand or inde- pendent Siam, Malaysia British colony, Indonesia or Dutch East Indies, Dutch colonies, Indochina, French colonies and the Philippines, Spanish colonies until the end of the century, and from 1898 onwards, American colonies until independence) was a common fact among the economies of the region, despite finding differences in the growth patterns of different countries. Particularly relevant are the studies of Maddison, who analyze Indochina and the Dutch East Indies (Maddison 1990, p. 364). In the case of the Philippines, the most relevant growth model studies are provided by Hooley, with an attempt to explain the growth of the Philip- pines (Hooley 2005, pp. 464–488) and Booth, who emphasizes the analysis of the impact of the provision of new land for the plantation economy in the Philippine archipelago (Booth 2007, pp. 241–266). It should also be noted that these models often work with partially estimated data for dates for which there are no historical references, particularly when data from more remote areas must be covered. In the case of the Philippines, we have worked with data from engineering and execution projects for the Spanish period, and census data for the North American period

نویسندگان: Shan Shanne Huang خلاصه: CHAPTER 1 Introduction On 1 July 2021, Xi Jinping stated in his speech at the conference of cele- bration of the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that the Reform and Opening Up and socialist modernisation is one of the greatest achievements of the CCP.1 In the speech, he said the People’s Republic of China (PRC) “achieved the implementation from the highly centralised planned economic system to the dynamic system of a socialist market economy” (shixian le cong gaodu jizhong de jihua jingji tizhi dao chongman huoli de shehui zhuyi shichang jingji tizhi). Raised up in 1978, the Reform and Opening Up (gaige kaifang ) has lasted for 44 years now, as has the state’s reform of the economic system. As Xi mentioned in his speech, due to the reform of the economic system, China has become the second-largest economy in the world

The Emergence of a Tradition: Essays in Honor of Jesús Huerta de Soto, Volume II Philosophy and Political Economy - Original PDF
نویسندگان: David Howden • Philipp Bagus خلاصه: Only a small minority of people, in our experience, know what Jesús’s full name is. Due to some idiosyncrasies of Spanish naming conventions, this group is dominated by Spaniards. To aid the non-Spanish speaker, a brief explanation of his name is necessary. All Spanish surnames are composed of two parts. The first part is the father’s first surname, and the sec- ond is the mother’s first surname. The general form for all Spanish names becomes [first name] [paternal first surname] [maternal first surname]. Thus, all children have a different surname than their mothers and fathers, though this surname will include elements of both through their respective paternal branches. The children of Juan Garcia Fernandez and Sofia Gonzalez Martin, for example, would all have the surname Garcia Gonzalez. Jesús Huerta de Soto Ballester was born to Jesús Huerta Ballester and Concepción de Soto Acuña. His birth name was Jesús Huerta de Soto, and (after marrying Sonsoles Huarte) his children would have the surname Huerta Huarte. With six children, this linguistically challenging surname would have not been an isolated difficulty. After marriage, Jesús made the decision to legally change the order of his surnames. (This bureaucratic process is not straightforward, nor is it common.) As a result of this change, his first surname, Huerta de Soto, now includes elements of both his father’s and his mother’s names. His second surname, Ballester, is from his father. While the name remains essentially the same (Jesús Huerta de Soto at birth versus Jesús Huerta de Soto Ballester today), the change in ordering meant that the family name passed down to his children would be “Huerta de Soto” instead of “Huerta.” This also applies to their descendants. In all but the most formal situations in Spain, use of only the first surname

نویسندگان: Yining Li Zhiqiang Cheng Editors The Chinese Path Toward a Leaner Government The Chinese Path Toward a Leaner Government Yining Li · Zhiqiang Cheng خلاصه: Building a leaner government ( Jian Zheng Fang Quan , or “streamlining admin- istration and delegating powers” in the official translated documents) is essential in China’s transition from a planned economy to a market economy and in an effort to improve the country’s socialist market economy. People of our generation have all had some experiences with the planned economy. It was a time when the government managed everything from production to consump- tion. In other words, the government assumed the role of both the producer and distributor of goods. Little was outside the government administration. It set quotas that matched its plans and organized supplies according to the quotas. No one in China at that time had ever heard about the term Jian Zheng Fang Quan or stream- lining administration and delegating powers. In fact, it was impossible to streamline the government then because everything was controlled by the government, every decision had to come from the higher authorities, and all kinds of stuff were placed under the quota system. When a government assigned each of its staff with a particular task to either manage or supervise economic activities, how could it be streamlined? Power devolution was even more beyond imagination. The planned economy was based on the concentration of power. If power was delegated, how could the economy and people’s daily life go as the government had planned for them? Indeed, there were times when the Chinese government was concerned about the low efficiency and poor performance of the planned economy that too much concentration of power had entailed. However, there were no better ways. China had quite a few lessons learnt in a hard way. Trials to cut government power or remove some quota all ended up in market disorder. Shifting back to old practice only stifled the economy. Such policy flip-flops occurred time after time during the period of the planned economy. It was a doomed cycle that no one was able to brea

نویسندگان: Nesrin Özataç • Korhan K. Gökmenoğlu Daniel Balsalobre Lorente Nigar Taşpınar • Bezhan Rustamov خلاصه: Price movements in the energy market are crucial because energy plays a vital role in the world’s economies and human life. The high volatility in energy prices since the 1990s is due to several historical developments, including the deregulation of energy markets, the Asian financial crisis in 1997, and the 2008 global financial crisis (Lien et al., 2016; Lang & Auer, 2019) have increased the need for an appro- priate protection strategy. Hedging by using futures contracts makes the problem of “finding an appropriate hedge ratio” vital. In calculating the optimal hedge ratio (OHR), estimations are mostly based on the average (expected) relationship between spot and futures prices. This approach ignores the tail distribution of the variables (Lien et al., 2016; Shrestha et al., 2018). However, the widely documented non- normal distribution of financial variables makes considering the quantiles of the variables essential. To fill this gap, we used the recently developed quantile-on- quantile (Q-Q) (Sim & Zhou, 2015) approach to estimate the minimum-variance (MV) hedge ratio for crude oil, natural gas, and gasoline markets. Besides, to have a better understanding of the relationship between these variables, we examined long-run and causal relationships by using methods that consider the distribution of the variables.

نویسندگان: Eleonora Santos · Neuza Ribeiro · Teresa Eugénio خلاصه: This study was developed using scientometrics tools and the purpose was to identify and evaluate the scientific production in hedge accounting until the year 2021. The investigation describes a quantitative overview of published studies focusing on hedge accounting and provides information on the performance of arti- cles, journals, and authors of the collected sample. This article contributes to the literature by exploring through maps and graphs the expressions and words most used by the authors in order to identify the main fields of investigation and try to observe the changes in the guidelines of the studies over the years. Through the results of the sample analysis, it is possible to suggest the incorporation and development of new trends in the fields of investigations related to hedge accounting over the years. The results obtained in the regression model corroborate the idea of evolution in the theme of this research field. Finally, the results showed that the annual scientific productions published showed non-constant growth. A study published in 1995, prior to the publication of IAS 39, is the most influential of the sample in terms of total citations and citations per year, corroborating the idea that despite the emergence of new directions in research, main investigations are used as a matrix in the search field

نویسندگان: Shujiro Urata • Ken-Ichi Akao • Ayu Washizu خلاصه: Introduction This multidisciplinary book provides 14 problem-solving lectures on the sustainable development of people, peace, planet, and prosperity—four of the five keywords for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 4 namely people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships (5Ps). According to the Resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations (2015, p. 2), the SDGs are intended to promote the following actions in these five areas: (1) For people: end poverty and hunger in all their forms and dimensions, as well as ensure that all human beings can fulfill their potential with dignity and equality and in a healthy environment. (2) For planet: protect it from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, by sustainably managing natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations. (3) For prosperity: ensure that all human beings enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social, and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature. (4) For peace: foster peaceful and inclusive societies that are free from fear and violence. (5) For partnerships: mobilize the means required to implement this agenda through a revitalized Global Partnership for Sustainable Development based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focusing, in partic- ular, on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders, and all people

نویسندگان: Constantine Stephanidis, Margherita Antona, Stavroula Ntoa, Gavriel Salvendy خلاصه: 4 P. Asghari et al. 1 Introduction Eye tracking (ET) is frequently used, for example, in behavioral research and human-computer interaction. Eye movement patterns can reveal detailed infor- mation about the user’s cognitive processes, their attention level, or decision- making processes [3,12]. Applications and research based on ET require reliable and robust data [9]. Traditionally, this requires dedicated hardware with high- resolution cameras and infrared illumination to detect corneal reflections [7]. However, dedicated hardware is expensive and thus limits the pervasive use in real-world applications. This situation may change since, propelled by recent advances in deep learning, appearance-based gaze estimation methods that deliver promising results based on low-cost consumer-grade camera inputs start to emerge [2,10,11,21]. These approaches learn to estimate gazes from a video stream based on large-scale data sets and provide 3D gaze vectors or correspond- ing 2D gaze locations on a screen. Furthermore, they do not require any specific external devices and can be used with standalone computers, laptop built-in webcams, or mobile device consumer-grade cameras. This opens up the possi- bility of developing affordable automated intelligent ET solutions for research, commerce, and the general public. On the way to realize this ambition, webcam ET (wcET) has to address several challenges including gaze estimation accu- racy, gaze estimator prediction time, and that gaze estimation quality can be affected by user movements [11]. This paper aims to contribute to the first step toward utilizing wcET as a low-cost pervasive technology by validating the data quality of a state-of-the-art wcET approach in comparison to the performance of an established, commercially available dedicated eye tracking (dhET) system. Accordingly, we address the following research question in our work: How does the gaze estimates of wcET differ from dhET in practical settings regarding accu- racy, precision, and sampling rate? We will further discuss how the limitations of the data quality may affect the performance of wcET applications
