ng in a hotel in a southern city in China, I was in the middle of transcribing an interview with Teresa, one of my research participants. This hotel on campus had a traditional Chinese cultural flavor in its architec- ture and interior design, and I enjoyed my stay in it. All of a sudden, everything came together in my mind in a moment of revelation with Teresa’s voice from the recorder still lingering in my ear. I quickly stopped the tape recorder to write down the title of this book and its chapter layout. The structure of the book has remained true to this initial idea with minor revisions. What came as a surprise has stayed. Surprise has appeared throughout this life-history, qualitative study of four university professors—two Americans and two Chinese; two women and two men—as all of them have brought critical moments, when I least anticipated them, to my new awareness. The purpose of my study was to understand how university professors’ life experiences contribute to their cross-cultural engage- ments and how such engagements influence their work in universities to inform 0 PATHWAYS OF SURPRISE, STILLNESS, AND SPIRITUALITY 2 Nonviolence and Education transnational and intercultural education. I focused on Chinese professors’ engage- ment with Western thought and culture and American professors’ engagement with Chinese thought and culture, and for that purpose, I selected participants in humanities and the social sciences whose educational work might be more related to cross-cultural thought and experiences than professors in the natural sciences or engineering. The fact that two participants, an American professor, David, and a Chinese professor, Song, were both in the field of China studies and graduated from different prestigious American universities was an unplanned coincidence, providing two different lenses for cross-cultural engagements in the same field (yet with different specialties), a field closely related to the theme of my study.
