خلاصه: I am in the U.S., en San Diego, California. It is the fifth state where I have made my home since I migrated de Colombia hace 18 años. I arrived here in California less than a month ago after joining the faculty of the Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program en San Diego State University with the pros- pect of developing a bilingual (Spanish-English) MFT training track that includes supervision in Spanish. The university is located on the land of the Kumeyaay. I am in front of my office del North Education Building. I am relishing the company of the comforting San Diegan weather; me recuerda al clima de Colombia. I am sitting on a wooden bench. It is painted with an image of a paved road heading toward a white orb of sunshine high above the point directly above where the road ends. On the left-hand side of the road, words, alternately red and white, declare: “concentration,” “perseverance,” “graduation,” and “expectations.” And, on the right, equally assertively: “optimism,” “determination,” and “grades.” These could very well be considered to summarize the tenets of the Western, U.S., Eurocentric, neoliberal rhetoric of desarrollismo or developmentalism (Escobar, 2007), expressed in an education that promises progress and success in the era of English (Mizumura, 2015)
