Victory for Us Is to See You Suffer: In the West Bank with the Palestinians and the Israelis - PDF
نویسندگان: Philip C. Winslow خلاصه: During the second Palestinian intifada, Philip C. Winslow worked in the West Bank with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), driving up to 600 miles a week between almost every Palestinian town, village, and refugee camp and every Israeli checkpoint in the occupied territory. He returned just before the onset of the 2006 war between Israel and Hizbollah in Lebanon. In this important new book Winslow captures the human aspects of the conflict during the years of suicide bombings and Israeli reprisals in the West Bank-the daily struggles, desperation, and anger of Palestinian farmers and teachers, the hostility of extremist settlers, the complex range of responses from Israeli soldiers, officials, and peace activists, and even the breathtaking beauty of nature in this embattled place. On this small patch of land, broken up by hundreds of heavily guarded roadblocks, nervous young Israeli soldiers who believe they are fighting terrorists tightly control the movement of Palestinians trying to make a life on their own land. A group of Israeli women, seeking to protect the rights of those same Palestinians and protest the decades of occupation, keeps a watchful eye on the checkpoints run by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The Israeli soldiers are often fierce in their treatment of Palestinians, as revealed in an army video described here in detail, but some have exhibited extraordinary courage in defying the culture of cruelty and even their superior officers in order to act humanely. Former soldiers who oppose the occupation spoke candidly to Winslow about what they and their units did during their service.Working with UNRWA, Winslow negotiated the delivery of humanitarian aid through military barriers, often finding himself the target of anger from both Palestinians and Israelis. He returned to the West Bank as a journalist, in the wake of the Hamas victory in Palestinian parliamentary elections, to interview people on both sides of the checkpoints and look at the decades-long destructive cycle through their eyes. From these unique multiple perspectives Winslow offers an uncensored view of the realities on the ground that have made a just political solution and enduring peace so difficult.

Natural Resource Degradation and Human-Nature Wellbeing Cases of Biodiversity Resources, Water Resources, and Climate Change - Original PDF
Natural Resource Degradation and Human-Nature Wellbeing Cases of Biodiversity Resources, Water Resources, and Climate Change - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir · Tanjila Afrin · Mohammad Saeed Islam خلاصه: he worldwide concerns for deforestation, degraded soil, polluted air, declined water, endangered species and climate change are all well-meaning. Yet the causes, effects and solutions warrant meticulous scrutiny. The concerns have heightened in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, as there is a direct linkage between nature’s destruction and the outbreak of disease. It is imperative to protect nature by halting natural resource degradation to prevent future pandemics. In this backdrop, the book focuses on natural resource governance mechanisms illustrated with cases of biodiversity, water resources and climate change to identify the underlying causes of resource degradation, especially in the context of developing countries. It also attempts to bring forth a new understanding regarding the usage, management and conservation of natural resources in a sustainable manner. The broad concerns that arise in the contemporary era are to (a) conserve nature in all its forms and functions and (b) create an equitable home and achieve a high standard of living for people on this planet without destabilising critical planetary processes (O’Neill et al., 2018; WWF, 2016). These dual challenges are also delin- eated in the United Nations’ 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The Sustain- able Development Goals (SDGs)—17 in total—under the agenda include several goals (Goals 6, 13, 14 and 15) which focus on nature and the environment directly (Elder & Olsen, 2019; Scharlemann et al., 2020), while other goals have indirect environmental implications as well.

نویسندگان: Salvador Estrada خلاصه: The worst of times in 50 years. Wars, pandemics, and climate change. In addition, to civil and drug wars, ethnic violence, and terrorist insurgen- cies, now we are suffering a Geopolitics war. Over a half billion infected people and 6 million passed away. Climate change worsens natural disas- ters such as floods, drought, wildfires, and hurricanes. Pain, life losses, grief and suffering, exodus, and famine. In brief a humanitarian disaster. No doubt, these conditions exercise pressure to accelerate a transfor- mation. Global warming warns of carbon dependence. Change demands large-scale investments in renewable energy, but this solution is not contradiction-free. This technology requires rare earth minerals and other scarce and non-renewable materials found in a few countries. In times of deglobalization, opening trade is demanded to enable such a transfor- mation. We are living for these conditions: severe economic disruptions, higher costs of living, energy, commodities, and food price shocks. How is the world after a persistent COVID-19 pandemic? The COVID-19 pandemic is a decreasing worry since several parts of the world are becoming endemic, but we still suffer its impacts manifested in inflation, energy prices, and supply chain disruption. Nonetheless, the outlook for the economy is perceived as dark since the conflict in Ukraine and the threat of new virus strains and variants as other zoonotic diseases. So, the 2021 economic recovery has a turndown and provokes a cautious sentimen

نویسندگان: Shan Shanne Huang خلاصه: CHAPTER 1 Introduction On 1 July 2021, Xi Jinping stated in his speech at the conference of cele- bration of the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that the Reform and Opening Up and socialist modernisation is one of the greatest achievements of the CCP.1 In the speech, he said the People’s Republic of China (PRC) “achieved the implementation from the highly centralised planned economic system to the dynamic system of a socialist market economy” (shixian le cong gaodu jizhong de jihua jingji tizhi dao chongman huoli de shehui zhuyi shichang jingji tizhi). Raised up in 1978, the Reform and Opening Up (gaige kaifang ) has lasted for 44 years now, as has the state’s reform of the economic system. As Xi mentioned in his speech, due to the reform of the economic system, China has become the second-largest economy in the world

Healthcare and Disease Burden in Africa The Impact of Socioeconomic Factors on Public Health - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Ilha Niohuru خلاصه: Chapter 1 Introduction There is an acute scarcity of research and studies on the conditions of healthcare in African countries. According to Marincola and Kariuki (2020), 20% of the global disease burden falls on the shoulders of Africa, yet only 1% of worldwide scientific output focuses on African countries. Filling the epistemological gap is critical, for it will not only shine a light on our understanding of the realities of the continent, but also pave way for more engaged future studies. The investigation of existing health- care conditions in Africa provides an indispensable basis for generating educated responses to the challenges that confront the continent as a whole and across its different localities. Africa also occupies a historically overlooked and underrep- resented position. It is a unique continent with highly diverse cultures, societies, and economic compositions. While significantly different from the Western or more economically developed parts of the world, Africa is playing a crucial role on the global stage in a variety of aspects. Therefore, studies of Africa will not only benefit the regional communities, but also have a long-lasting impact on the rest of the world. Africa carries the oldest and most diverse genome. Around seven billion of the world’s population share a common origin in Africa. The burden of disease in Africa is also shifting from communicable to non-communicable diseases, which is also a major concern of the societies that are more economically developed. Therefore, addressing the disease burden in Africa, in parallel, means investing in the prevention and treatment of diseases in the rest of the world.

Sustainable Development Disciplines for Society Breaking Down the 5Ps—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Shujiro Urata • Ken-Ichi Akao • Ayu Washizu خلاصه: Introduction This multidisciplinary book provides 14 problem-solving lectures on the sustainable development of people, peace, planet, and prosperity—four of the five keywords for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 4 namely people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships (5Ps). According to the Resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations (2015, p. 2), the SDGs are intended to promote the following actions in these five areas: (1) For people: end poverty and hunger in all their forms and dimensions, as well as ensure that all human beings can fulfill their potential with dignity and equality and in a healthy environment. (2) For planet: protect it from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, by sustainably managing natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations. (3) For prosperity: ensure that all human beings enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social, and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature. (4) For peace: foster peaceful and inclusive societies that are free from fear and violence. (5) For partnerships: mobilize the means required to implement this agenda through a revitalized Global Partnership for Sustainable Development based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focusing, in partic- ular, on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders, and all people
