Advanced Methods in Family Therapy Research: a focus on validity and change - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Richard B Miller, Lee N. Johnson خلاصه: I (L.J.) remember when I started graduate school as a new student in the field of marriage and family therapy (MFT). One of the required classes in my first semester was statistics. I was an engineering major and I enjoy math so I thought statistics would be fun. The teacher was great, and I learned a lot. The one downside to the experience was that the course was taught in the agriculture department. The class focused mostly on analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the instructor would draw a 2 × 2 or larger plot on the chalk- board and say something like, “You can randomly assign conditions to each square in your field, and then you plant your seeds in the randomly assigned quadrant, and you can ‘see’ what happens and calculate an ANOVA.” After a few class periods of plot drawing and hearing examples from agriculture, I felt like I was starting to learn what an ANOVA was and how to calculate it. But I was missing the application to people. So, being the good graduate student that I was, I raised my hand and asked, “How do you do this with people?” The instructor replied, “You don’t.” I was dumbfounded. Why was I taking this class if I could not apply what I was learning to people? Why was I taking this class from someone who was a fine teacher but did not know how to apply this information to people? As I progressed through graduate school and took other statistics and research methods courses, I was able to fill in the gaps and learn how to apply statistics to people. I also learned how much more compli- cated research was when trying to apply what I had learned about researching individual people to researching more complex configurations that included couples and families.

Elements of Mathematics for Economics and Finance - PDF
نویسندگان: Author(s): Vassilis C. Mavron, Timothy N. Phillips خلاصه: Based on over 15 years’ experience in the design and delivery of successful first-year courses, this book equips undergraduates with the mathematical skills required for degree courses in economics, finance, management and business studies. The book starts with a summary of basic skills and takes its readers as far as constrained optimisation helping them to become confident and competent in the use of mathematical tools and techniques that can be applied to a range of problems in economics and finance. Designed as both a course text and a handbook, the book assumes little prior mathematical knowledge beyond elementary algebra and is therefore suitable for students returning to mathematics after a long break. The fundamental ideas are described in the simplest mathematical terms, highlighting threads of common mathematical theory in the various topics. Features include: a systematic approach: ideas are touched upon, introduced gradually and then consolidated through the use of illustrative examples; several entry points to accommodate differing mathematical backgrounds; numerous worked examples and exercises to illustrate the theory and applications; full solutions to exercises, available to lecturers via the web. Vass Mavron is Professor of Mathematics in the Institute of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Wales Aberystwyth. Tim Phillips is Professor of Mathematics and Professorial Fellow in the School of Mathematics at Cardiff University.

Routine Outcome Monitoring in Couple and Family Therapy: The Empirically Informed Therapist - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Terje Tilden, Bruce E. Wampold (eds.) خلاصه: This research-to-practice manual introduces Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM), a feedback-based approach to preventing impasses and relapses in couple and family therapy as well as within other psychotherapy approaches. This book discusses how ROM has been developed and experienced within the Norwegian couples and family therapy community in line with international trends of bridging the gap between clinical practice and research. Locating the method in evidence-based systemic practice, contributors describe the core techniques, tools, and process of ROM, including examples of effective uses of feedback over different stages of therapy, with individuals in family context, and implemented in different countries. Giving clients this level of control in treatment reinforces the concept of therapy as a collaborative process, fostering client engagement and involvement, commitment to treatment, and post-treatment progress. ROM is applicable across clinical settings and clinician orientations for maximum utility in work with clients, and in building therapeutic self-awareness. Features of the book:•Theoretical and empirical context for using ROM with families and couples.•Tools and procedures, including the Systemic Therapy Inventory of Change.•Guidelines for treatment planning, implementation, and evaluation.•Common challenges in using ROM with couples and families.•Supervisory, training, and ethical issues.•Examples and vignettes showing ROM in action. With its deep potential for promoting client progress as well as therapist development, Routine Outcome Monitoring in Couple and Family Therapy: The Empirically Informed Therapist will attract practitioners and research professionals particularly interested in clinical practice, client-directed methods, and couple or family therapy.

Raj Rhapsodies: Tourism, Heritage and the Seduction of History (New Directions in Tourism Analysis) - Original PDF
نویسندگان: CAROL E. HENDERSON, MAXINE WEISGRAU خلاصه: Heritage is a prized cultural commodity in the marketing of tourism destinations, with particular views of a place being promoted while others are downplayed. The representation of heritage in tourism as something that is static and timeless, derived since time immemorial from a distant past, is seductive. In Asia, a major part of the tourism market lies in the sale and consumption of highly orientalized images and versions of culture and history. This is particularly seen in India, where its northern state of Rajasthan has been successfully marketed as the nation's most heritage-laden, traditional and authentic. This draws heavily on the late nineteenth and early twentieth century years of British rule in India - the Raj.

Teaching Family Therapy - Original PDF
Teaching Family Therapy - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Ros Draper خلاصه: The teaching of family therapy has been the subject of serious scrutiny since the onset of training and accreditation many years ago, yet there are relatively few attempts to apply what we know about systems and the ways they change family therapy teaching as a two-way process. It is as though family therapy teachers were preoccupied with the content of what should be taught, and were not able to direct their attention to the process by which people learned. The authors began by describing the way they conceptualize the "learning context" which sets the frame for all the teaching they do. Then they discuss the process of setting up a family therapy course, e.g. "What is the best way to negotiate with a training officer to set up a course in a local area?". The book then moves to creating the course syllabus, and some of the practical problems-from lateness to mechanical failures-of getting the course off the ground. The family therapy courses being described are generic courses which cover all the major schools of thought from Structuralist to Strategic to systemic to Constructivist approaches. The unique contribution of this book is the many carefully crafted exercises which form the heart of the teaching/learning experience. Each exercise is designed to teach particular content, such as "enactment", or "circular questioning", which is related to a particular family therapy approach, yet the exercise is also designed with the learning context in mind and it pays attention to the ongoing relationship between teacher and student to maximize the learning which can take place.

Play Therapy with Children in Crisis: Individual, Group, and Family Treatment, 3rd edition - Original PDF
Play Therapy with Children in Crisis: Individual, Group, and Family Treatment, 3rd edition - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Nancy Boyd Webb DSW BCD RPT-S, MD Lenore C. Terr خلاصه: Crises and traumatic events are ubiquitous in modern life and affect people of all ages. Contrary to the myth that the magic years of childhood are a period of guileless innocence and carefree play, the reality of the preteen years, like that of later life, includes experiences that provoke anger, jealousy, fear, and grief as well as joy and pleasure. When children experience crises or traumas, their families and communities inevitably also are involved. Sometimes adults actually cause children to be victimized, as in cases of abuse. In other situations (such as natural disasters), no one person is responsible, and the entire affected community must deal together with the shared experience. This revised volume begins with a focus on the family and community envi- ronment in which children live, because of the importance of this social context to the nature of children’s reactions in crises or traumatic situations. We know that children depend on the adults around them for security and protection, and the younger they are, the more this is the case. Furthermore, evidence in the professional literature increasingly attests to the influence of adults’ responses to crises or traumas on the subsequent nature of children’s reactions (Arroyo & Eth, 1996; McFarlane, 1987; Rustemi & Karanei, 1996; Pfefferbaum, 1997; Swenson et al., 1996). Because children watch and take their cues from adults, when their caretakers feel and act terrified, children become even more panicked—since they know that they themselves are helpless and powerless.
