Healthy Ageing in Singapore Opportunities, Challenges and the Way Forward - Original PDF
نویسندگان: خلاصه: Singapore is the world’s second-fastest ageing society. It will become a super-aged society by 2030. The twin challenges of low fertility rate and longer life expectancy have resulted in a shrinking workforce, an increase in old-age dependency ratio and feminization of ageing in the country. This chapter examines the government’s response to popula- tion ageing in Singapore since 1982. The Singapore government adopts the “many helping hands” approach to enable individuals, families and community partners to play their part in supporting and caring for older adults. It also promulgates important legislations to protect the rights of older adults. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to healthy ageing. How an individual, the community and the government understand and inter- pret the concept of healthy ageing may vary among cities or countries. Besides, how the government in a city or a country develops its healthy ageing framework or implements its healthy ageing strategy very much depends on the political, economic, social, cultural and historical context. Nevertheless, achieving healthy ageing should be able to add years to one’s life as well as add life to one’s years

Yet the causes, effects and solutions warrant meticulous scrutiny. The concerns have heightened in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, as there is a direct linkage between nature’s destruction and the outbreak of disease. It is imperative to protect nature by halting natural resource degradation to prevent future pandemics. In this backdrop, the book focuses on natural resource governance mechanisms illustrated with cases of biodiversity, water resources and climate change to identify the underlying causes of resource degradation, especially in the context of developing countries. It also attempts to bring forth a new understanding regarding the usage, management and conservation of natural resources in a sustainable manner. The broad concerns that arise in the contemporary era are to (a) conserve nature in all its forms and functions and (b) create an equitable home and achieve a high standard of living for people on this planet without destabilising critical planetary processes (O’Neill et al., 2018; WWF, 2016). These dual challenges are also delin- eated in the United Nations’ 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The Sustain- able Development Goals (SDGs)—17 in total—under the agenda include several goals (Goals 6, 13, 14 and 15) which focus on nature and the environment directly (Elder & Olsen, 2019; Scharlemann et al., 2020), while other goals have indirect environmental implications as well.

نویسندگان: خلاصه: Preface Decarbonization of the Chinese economy largely depends on the degree of decar- bonization of industry. Since improving energy efficiency and increasing energy R&D investment are arguably the chief drivers of the sustainable growth of the Chinese industry, this book attempts to study energy efficiency and energy R&D investment under one normalized economic model. By distinguishing between energy R&D investment and non-energy R&D investment and drawing on the paradigm of neoclassical economics, I start by clarifying the basic concept of energy- saving technological change (hereinafter referred to as “ESTC”) and the related endogenous mechanism, proceed to integrate under the existing endogenous growth model two different mechanisms whereby R&D heterogeneity affects energy effi- ciency, namely the effect of factor substitution and the effect of increased effective energy input, and finally build a framework of analysis and a mathematical model of R&D heterogeneity-based endogenous ESTC in industry. I analyze the model with the tools of competitive equilibrium, centrally planned equilibrium, and numerical simulation and empirically test the major assumptions of the model with industrial statistics and econometric analytical tools, namely the mixed data regression model, the panel data regression model, and the dynamic panel data regression model. This book focuses on how R&D heterogeneity influences endogenous ESTC in China’s industrial sectors and endeavors to answer the following questions: How does R&D heterogeneity bring about endogenous ESTC? How are the rates of ESTC in the industrial sectors estimated? What is the impact of R&D heterogeneity on the rates of ESTC in the industrial sectors? When we are faced with a problem, the brain's immediate reaction is to find a solution that is faster and requires the least amount of energy to solve. Nature works this way. As a professional, it is extremely important to solve any UX problem as comprehensively as possible, without trying to find the easiest solution or putting yourself in the user's shoes in a superficial way. What I have learned from nearly 20 years of professional career is that the greater the knowledge on a given topic, the less research I need. And that's not bad, on the contrary. The greater my knowledge of a task, the greater my empathic ability to provide solutions that are appropriate and that make sense to most users. The greater my knowledge of a subject, the greater my ability to sell that product or sell my idea.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT IN PARALYMPIC SPORT: RESEARCHER AND PRACTITIONER PERSPECTIVES - Original PDF
نویسندگان: خلاصه: dentifying and developing talented athletes to their fullest potential is a central concern of coaches, sports scientists, and sports policymakers. However, there is currently limited practical and theoretical knowledge for those working in Paralympic sport. A systematic review by our research team (Dehghansai et al., 2017a), for example, highlighted the clear lack of literature examining athlete development. Subsequent studies (Dehghansai et al., 2017b; Dehghansai & Baker, 2020; Dehghansai et al., 2020, 2022, 2021, Houlihan & Chapman, 2017; Patatas et al., 2020, 2022) from research groups around the world have expanded our understanding, and provided the impetus for this book, which aims to synthesize the most up-to-date research with practice across international Paralympic sport systems (e.g., from those in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, United States, Netherlands, and New Zealand). As part of Australia’s preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, two of the authors/editors have experienced first-hand the potential opportunities for supporting athlete development. We have witnessed rapid performance trajectories, the quality and passion of coaches and other practitioners working in this field, and the creativity required to solve problems. We also observed (and experienced) many of the challenges that are highlighted and discussed at length throughout this book.
