Safety has become an integral and essential part behind the engineering process for the modern vehicle. Vehicle safety is a wide-ranging discipline covering many engineering activities spanning materials, ergonomics, environmental, functional, and so forth. This book covers functional safety, also referred to as system safety. Functional (or system) safety refers to aspects of the overall safety of a vehicle that rely on the vehicle sub-systems producing correct outputs or operating correctly in response to stimuli. The most important vehicle sub-systems are the following: 1. Sensors 2. Actuators 3. Electronic control units (ECUs) 4. Communication systems 5. Software (e.g., application, middleware, drivers) Thus, it is timely that a book covering the most important aspects of functional (i.e., system) safety-critical automotive systems is published. The goals of this book are threefold: 1. To provide a quick introduction to and summary of the subject 2. To provide a classification and analysis of the recent literature on the subject 3. To reproduce the most representative of SAE publications on the subject The task of assembling a book on safety-critical automotive systems is challenging because the subject is complex, involving several technical areas that have contributed to the existing body of knowledge. In addition, the subject is by no means mature. There will be many excellent contributions and publications in the years to come. There are also many good publications in a number of worldwide conferences and/or journals. However, the intent of this book was to consider only SAE publications. Nevertheless, many of the SAE papers in this book include references to other publications. After selecting a number of papers, the question arose as to what criteria should be used to classify these papers. One possible criterion was to organize the papers around the constituent elements of a system (e.g., sensors, actuators, ECUs, communication system, software). Another criterion was to organize the papers along the steps to be followed while building a complete final system. We have decided to use the second criterion. Gemäß den Leitlinien der Deut- schen Röntgengesellschaft (AG Kopf-Hals-Diagnostik) wird die MRT bei Verdacht auf suprahyoidale Tumoren aufgrund ihres gu- ten Weichteilkontrasts eingesetzt. Die CT kommt bei infrahyoidal gelegenen Tumoren zur Anwendung, da sie aufgrund der gerin- gen Untersuchungszeit im Vergleich zur MRT deutlich weniger artefaktanfällig ist. ●HMerke Bei der CT führt ein langes Zeitintervall nach Kontrastmittelinjek- tion (60–80 s) zur besseren Darstellung von Tumoren. Für die MRT ist gemäß den Empfehlungen der AG Kopf-Hals- Diagnostik der Deutschen Röntgengesellschaft die Durchführung mindestens folgender Sequenzen erforderlich: ● koronare fettunterdrückte T2w (T2-gewichtete) Sequenz (STIR [Short-Tau Inversion-Recovery]) mit einer Schichtdicke von 3–5 mm ● axiale T2w Sequenz mit Fettunterdrückung mit einer Schicht- dicke von 3–4 mm ● axiale und koronare native T1w (T1-gewichtete) SE-Sequenz (Spin-Echo-Sequenz) ohne Fettsättigung mit einer Schichtdicke von 3–4 mm ● axiale und koronare fettunterdrückte T1w SE-Sequenz nach i. v. (intravenöser) Kontrastmittelinjektion

What is Anfal? If you launch an internet search on Anfal, you will encounter two main strands of literature. The first one relates to the Kurdish genocide by Saddam’s regime in the late eighties, and the second is about the eight Surah (chapter) of the Koran known as ‘Al-Anfal’. As Kurdistan regional government has aptly underlined, in Kurdish society, the word Anfal has come to represent the entire genocide over decades. Anfal was the term used by Saddam Hossein to describe a series of eight military campaigns conducted by the Iraqi government against rural Kurdish communities in Iraq, which lasted from February 23 to September 6, 1988.1 The campaign took its name from Surah al-Anfal in the Koran. Al-Anfal literally means the spoils of war (bounties) and was used to describe the military campaign of extermination and looting commanded by Ali Hassan al-Majid, the cousin of Saddam Hossein. As President of Iraq, Saddam Hossein frequently used religious language when describing the actions of his Ba’athist regime (see Johns, 2006), portraying Arabs as true defenders of Islam and Kurds as infidels.2

When we look at the past four million years of human evolution, the trajectory of humanity before they reach the pinnacles of achievements in economic, technological, cultural, and social dimensions today, we may find out there are three distinct eras. As is known to many, an economic era is not defined by what is produced, but by how and what kind of tools are used for production. As the production tools typical of an era vary, so does the capital an economy depends on for growth. We may roughly divide the economic development of humanity into three eras, characterized by hand tools and natural capital, by machine tools and production capital, and by intellectual tools and human capital, respectively. In the era of hand tools, agrarian and prior forms of society—which span from primitive, slave to feudal societies—relied mainly on natural capital. Natural capital provides natural means of living and production, and the multiplication of popula- tion is mainly reflected in the size of the workforce. Therefore, ancient and medieval civilizations appeared mostly in places with fertile land, abundant precipitation, mild climate, convenient land and water transportation, a dense population and large labor force. Cases in point are the five cradles of civilizations, namely, ancient Mesopotamia along the Tigris and Euphrates, ancient Egypt along the Nile Valley, ancient India along the Ganges River, ancient China along the Yellow River, and ancient Greece.
