نویسندگان: خلاصه: Evolutionary theory can be a nasty business. Perhaps it has something to say about human nature. Most scientifically respectable evolutionary theories wear garments of math. I think of mathematical models as disciplined metaphors. We use x to represent something in the world, say slugs, and y to represent something else, say lettuces, then we analyze the relation of x to y using mathematics. We imagine that slugs and lettuces behave like x and y in the model, and then we use how x and y behave in the model to understand how slugs and lettuces behave in the world. Nobody can argue with mathematical models—that is one of the points of using mathematics—but there can be endless arguments about what you put into a model and what you leave out, and endless arguments about what the model means, because metaphors can be interpreted in many ways. I am not criticizing the use of metaphors—far from it, they are essential. All that we know about the world is metaphor. Our perceptions are a virtual reality, not the thing in itself but something that stands in the place of the thing. Phenomena are metaphors used to comprehend things. Don’t worry, this book contains almost no mathematics; but, if you don’t like metaphor, then this is probably a good time to return the book and ask for a refund.

نویسندگان: خلاصه: Détente seemed to prolong the division of Europe. It seemed to make America lose sight of its mission. From the perspective of its critics, détente allowed for the Soviet Union’s arms buildup in the 1970s, and it allegedly precipitated America’s decline in the wake of the Vietnam War. That is the traditional Cold War narrative.1 This book tells a different story though. I argue that the power of dynamic détente policies transformed Europe in the shadow of the military status quo. This study depicts the origins and the implementation of American policies to overcome Europe’s division peace- fully through the kind of dynamic détente that was codified in the Helsinki Final Act of 1975. I emphasize that the transformative effects of the Helsinki Accords had been envisaged since the 1960s: Lyndon Johnson’s bridge build- ing and Willy Brandt’s Ostpolitik were the forerunners for the Helsinki pro- cess. Johnson and Brandt were eager to foster liberalizing changes in Eastern Europe through an expansion of East-West communication. At first, it was going to be a 5000-or-so word book, and it was just going to be a little primer about Craiyon, or “Dall-E mini”, as it was called at the time. Craiyon is a generative art artificial intelligence program and, since you’ve picked up this book, you probably already know what it does. However, I will allow for the following possibilities: 1. This book was a present, which is good, because at least you didn’t get socks 2. You only bought it to impress the hot, artistically-inclined hottie that’s hawt at school. The good news? You just put food on my table. The bad news? It’s not going to work. If any of the above are the case, let me bring you up to speed: Craiyon, and other similar AI art generation programs will let you enter a text prompt (tip: get used to the word “prompt”) and then create an image based on that text prompt. For example, you could ask for “a frog eating a bagel in a pond on Titan, edward hopper style” and the AI would do its best to return a picture that’s relevant to your prompt. Of course, this being AI, the results could end up being hilariously bad, but that’s also part of the fun. As any decent fellow writing a book about any subject would do, I went ahead and did my research on the matter, and while trying to find alternatives to Craiyon, I came upon DALL-E, which was (and still is, at the time of writing) in invite-only beta. I also discovered what would probably end up being my wife, if it was human and could cook creamy risotto, and I wasn’t already married: Midjourney. Of course, there are many more out there, often with their own twist on the formula. Nightcafe will actually let you print your creations and have them mailed to your address, while StarryAI will let you generate NFTs right then and there. Stable Diffusion is another big contender that I’ll be following with much interest. I have used most of them (for you, dear reader) and I can tell you that DALL-E and Midjourney beat the alternatives (with the exception of Stable Diffusion) into a pulp and use it to fertilize their plants, while Craiyon often returns such ingenious results that is definitely worth keeping around. After using the plethora of newfangled AI tools that suddenly sprang up on the web, I know that writing a book only about Craiyon was no longer an option. This book had to become the bible of AI- generated art books, or I had failed. Of course, it also had to be shipped in a reasonable amount of time, so I released it in a form that I consider to be finished, but far from complete. This means that content will be added to this book very regularly, and you’ll be able to download the updated version to your device any time you wish. At the time of writing, the book has already seen two updates, and many more are coming as this is a vibrant, active field in its early days, and that requires constant attention and revisions.

نویسندگان: خلاصه: Abstract Laser ablation of polymers has been studied with designed materials to evaluate the mechanism of ablation and the role of photochemically active groups on the ablation process, and to test possible applications of laser ablation and designed polymers. The incorporation of photochemically active groups lowers the threshold of ablation and allows high-quality structuring without contamination and modification of the remaining surface. The decomposition of the active chromophore takes place during the excitation pulse of the laser and gaseous products are ejected with supersonic velocity. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry reveals that a metastable species is among the products, suggesting that excited electronic states are involved in the ablation process. Experiments with a reference material, i.e., polyimide, for which a photothermal ablation mechanism has been suggested, exhibited pronounced differences. These results strongly suggest that, in case of designed polymers which contain photochemically active groups, a photochemical part in the ablation mechanism cannot be neglected. Various potential applications for laser ablation and the special photopolymers were evaluated and it became clear that the potential of laser ablation and specially designed material is in the field of microstructuring.
