نویسندگان: Dr. Nirushan Sivanesan خلاصه: Preface Evolutionary theory is the dominant scientific explanation for how all species came into existence. We are told there is such overwhelming evidence for the theory that it has become irrefutable. It is taught as fact in most science classrooms in the Western world, and the consensus in the scientific community is that the theory is true beyond doubt. In Western civilisation, if you do not subscribe to it, you are considered unintelligent or uneducated. However, there has been significant controversy and debate over the theory since it was first brought into the public domain about 160 years ago. This book attempts to explore this controversy and bring forth a case against evolutionary theory using various perspectives. It should be noted that this case does not attempt to disprove evolutionary theory, as this would appear to be a futile task, analogous to trying to disprove the existence of God. It only aims to demonstrate the flaws of the theory and address the pertinent question of whether the theory has been proven to a reasonable degree, such that it should be considered fact. This book is purely a collection of ideas and arguments designed to promote critical thinking and offer an alternative perspective. It critiques evolutionary theory primarily from a philosophical point of view. No new research, data or observations are provided. The focus is on criticising the reasoning that is being used and the conclusions that are being drawn from the information that evolutionists themselves use to formulate their theory. The majority of contemporary anti-evolution books are written from a religious point of view. Please note that this book is dissimilar in this regard: it attempts to discredit evolutionary theory without promoting religion or God. It is not advocating an alternative doctrine, nor advocating an active denial of the theory

نویسندگان: Philip S. Gorski AND Samuel L. Perry Foreword by Jemar Tisby خلاصه: I thought I had endured the worst racism that Christians could spew at me. Then came November 2016. In a bracing turn of events, a minority of voters elected Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States. To add to the head- spinning element of the moment, exit polls showed that white evangelical Christians who voted had pulled the lever for Trump at a rate of about 81 percent. I remember staying up late on election night as the results rolled in. I sat alone, my wife having long since gone to bed with the resolution that seeing the results live on television would not change the outcome. It was dark and I was toggling my eyes between the television screen and the Twitter feed on my phone. When it was clear that Trump had won, it became nearly impossible for me to grab and hold onto a single thought as my mind and emotions struggled to keep up with this new development. Finally, a feeling of dread settled over me as I reckoned with the fact that a blatant opponent of racial justice would soon occupy the highest political office in our nation. Then my thoughts focused on matters closer to home: my church. I attended a congregation that was predominantly white and evangelical. By the percentages and from my own interactions with them, I knew that many of my fellow churchgoers had voted for Trump. I couldn’t shake the pain I felt. I had made no secret about my concerns about this man, particularly his long record of trafficking in racial stereotypes and coddling racists. How could I go to church that Sunday with people who so clearly misunderstood and perhaps even dismissed my reality as a Black person in America? How could I sing, pray, and exchange pleasantries with folks who seemed not to care what their favored politician’s plans would mean for me, my family, our community, and our country? I knew I wouldn’t be able to fake it, and I didn’t want to try.

نویسندگان: Andy campbell خلاصه: It was late in March 2016, in the heat of Trump’s presidential push, and the national media had latched onto one bit of security footage from a Trump event. The video showed Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, grabbing and pushing Breitbart writer Michelle Fields as she approached Trump and tapped his elbow. Fields claimed that Lewandowski left bruises on her arm. It was enough that police charged Lewandowski with simple battery, but prosecutors ultimately dropped the case. He shrugged off the allegation and the news cycle that followed, which left the pundits to bicker among themselves over the footage and decide whether an assault had occurred. McInnes, staring slack-jawed at the footage during an episode of his reactionary talk show, couldn’t believe it warranted media attention in the first place. A woman touched a presidential candidate and got what was coming to her, he argued. If anything, she deserved more. “She wasn’t randomly grabbed!” he groused, his voice pitching upward in aggravation as the video played. “I think there’s not enough violence in today’s day and age.” McInnes then launched into one of his signature rants, steering the conversation toward his keynote: America had gone soft in the waning years of Barack Obama’s presidency, and there was no better evidence than the news media clutching its pearls over a woman being grabbed and pushed out of the way. Real Americans—real men—wouldn’t give this story the time of day. Real men are hardened by a lifetime of violence

HE ROUTLEDGE HANDBOOK OF ACCOUNTING ETHICS - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Eileen Z. Taylor and Paul F. Williams خلاصه: 1 INTRODUCTION Eileen Z. Taylor and Paul F. Williams “Ethics” and “morals” are two terms about which there is ambiguity. Some scholars consider the terms to be synonymous. Others make a distinction that ethics pertains to right conduct vis-à-vis others, while morals pertains to one’s personal sense of right conduct; still others reverse that distinction. Philosophers tend to regard the distinction between “ethics” and “morals” to be that ethics pertains to a centuries-old conversation about how we decide what is good and bad, right and wrong, while morals is the content of good and bad, right and wrong. The perspective on “ethics” taken in this book is this latter sense; thus the title Companion to Accounting Ethics. The book’s purpose is not to be a handbook of accounting rights and wrongs but rather a collec- tion of conversations employed by educators to assist students of accounting to become more attuned to accounting’s ethical aspects and to become more critical thinkers about the ethical complexities of the function of accounting in human society. As a social science, accounting is the creation of people, for the purpose of accounting for transactions (generally monetary) between and among groups of people. Accounting does not exist without people, and its rules of the day are determined by people; it is mutable and wholly dependent on both the decisions made by people with economic power and acceptance of those decisions by those same people. Similarly, ethics are enacted by people, and the ethicality of an action is determined by the individual affected by the action, as well as by the collective societal acceptance or rejection of an action. Accounting, because it is people driven, inherently has an ethical component. Every deci- sion about how to account for a transaction at some point affects an individual, either directly or indirectly. For example, decisions about recording revenue affect those whose income is commission-based. Decisions about recording an expense affects taxes paid (and received by the government for the benefit of society). Our primary goal with this book is to call attention to the intersectionality of accounting and ethics and to encourage students and researchers to consider the ethical implications of accounting decisions

Safety-Critical Automotive Systems - PDF
نویسندگان: Juan R. Pimentel خلاصه: Preface The subject of safety-critical automotive systems is growing in importance, as one can see by perusing the latest publications of SAE International. Safety has become an integral and essential part behind the engineering process for the modern vehicle. Vehicle safety is a wide-ranging discipline covering many engineering activities spanning materials, ergonomics, environmental, functional, and so forth. This book covers functional safety, also referred to as system safety. Functional (or system) safety refers to aspects of the overall safety of a vehicle that rely on the vehicle sub-systems producing correct outputs or operating correctly in response to stimuli. The most important vehicle sub-systems are the following: 1. Sensors 2. Actuators 3. Electronic control units (ECUs) 4. Communication systems 5. Software (e.g., application, middleware, drivers) Thus, it is timely that a book covering the most important aspects of functional (i.e., system) safety-critical automotive systems is published. The goals of this book are threefold: 1. To provide a quick introduction to and summary of the subject 2. To provide a classification and analysis of the recent literature on the subject 3. To reproduce the most representative of SAE publications on the subject The task of assembling a book on safety-critical automotive systems is challenging because the subject is complex, involving several technical areas that have contributed to the existing body of knowledge. In addition, the subject is by no means mature. There will be many excellent contributions and publications in the years to come. There are also many good publications in a number of worldwide conferences and/or journals. However, the intent of this book was to consider only SAE publications. Nevertheless, many of the SAE papers in this book include references to other publications. After selecting a number of papers, the question arose as to what criteria should be used to classify these papers. One possible criterion was to organize the papers around the constituent elements of a system (e.g., sensors, actuators, ECUs, communication system, software). Another criterion was to organize the papers along the steps to be followed while building a complete final system. We have decided to use the second criterion. Accordingly, the papers are organized in the following sections: 1. Introduction to safety-critical automotive systems 2. Safety processes to be followed 3. Requirements to be met 4. Analysis and design methods and techniques 5. Prototyping and target implementation 6. Testing, verification, and validation meth

نویسندگان: Dennis Deninger خلاصه: xv Preface Athletic competitions have affected how people perceive life and their roles within social groups since the ancient Olympic Games began in Greece in 776 BC, and most certainly back even farther before recorded history. On the North American continent for more than 1,000 years, the game of lacrosse has affected the social rela- tions among groups of native people, their tribes, and their families. Before a game, people would meet for ceremonial feasts and agree upon the stakes and rules. These meetings helped develop relations between nations, families, and competitors. In some cases, tribes would play a game of lacrosse to settle disputes instead of taking up arms against each other in battle. Sport continues to be a powerful social force, disseminating and reinforcing the values that regulate how people behave, setting examples for how to go about attain- ing goals and determining acceptable solutions for problems. And it presents indi- viduals and groups with a means to escape from the reality of their daily lives, if only for a few hours, into a world of entertainment and celebration populated by talented, charismatic stars capable of remarkable performances, powerful leaders, and teams, all with their legions of adoring followers. The word “sport” itself came into English in the late 14th century as “disport,” meaning a diversion that carried one away from work or serious matters, a recreation or amusement. Its origin is in the Latin verb “portare,” to carry. When you imagine how difficult daily life would have been in the 1300s, any recreation or amusement must have been a relief and a welcome escape

نویسندگان: Małgorzata Sopicka-Lizer خلاصه: Nanotechnology is an area of science and technology where dimensions and toler- ances in the range of 0.1 nm to 100 nm play a critical role. Nanotechnology encom- passes precision engineering as well as electronics, electromechanical systems and mainstream biomedical applications in areas as diverse as gene therapy, drug deliv- ery and novel drug discovery techniques. Nanostructured materials present exciting opportunities for manipulating structure and properties at the nano scale and the ability to engineer novel structures at the molecular level has led to unprecedented opportunities for materials design. This new book provides detailed insights into the synthesis/structure and property relationships of nanostructured materials. This is a valuable book for materials scientists, mechanical and electronic engineers and medical researchers.

نویسندگان: Kaveh Askari خلاصه: 1 Midcentury Film companies in Iran in the early 1960s did not always pay careful attention to their design elements, but Azhir Film had the ambition to bring its films, and especially its new release Zarbat (The Strike, Khachikian, 1964), into the world of midcentury cinema with a memorable design scheme. The film’s creators did not realistically expect it to produce revenues outside of Iran, although they teased this possibility in the press as the project moved through various stages of its production. 1 The primary aim, rather, was to create a certain kind of cinematic experience when the film was released. The release called upon modern design’s global ambitions at a time when packing movie houses in Tehran still typically meant securing a well-traveled film print. A stubborn disagreement between filmmakers had left a lot riding on this particular crime thriller. Film studios in Iran tried to avoid compet- ing releases, but this time, during a coveted release slot after the start of spring and the Iranian New Year, two producers refused to compro- mise. The Strike, produced by Josef Vaezian and directed by Samuel Khachikian, each of whom was coming off of a string of successful films, would be released the same week as the rival producer and for- mer Khachikian collaborator Mehdi Missaghieh’s Ensan- ha (Human Beings, Aghamaliyan). Industry professionals debated the ethics of this in the press, but neither producer would move aside. 2 The Strike’s dis

نویسندگان: Philippe Martin خلاصه: Back in 2017, I was working for a company building video streaming software. At the end of that year, a small team, including me, got assigned a new job to work on deploying the Video CDN developed by the company on Kubernetes. We decided to explore the concept of Custom Resources and Operators to deploy this CDN. The current Kubernetes release was 1.9, the concept of Custom Resource Definition had just been released in 1.7, and the sample-controller repository was the only documentation we knew of to help build an Operator. The Kubernetes ecosystem, being especially lively, had tools appearing in the following months, specifically the Kubebuilder SDK. Thus, our project was launched. From that moment on, I spent numerous days exploring how to build Operators and other programs interacting with the Kubernetes API. But the damage was done: I had started to learn Kubernetes programming from specific to general, and it took me a long time to fully understand the innards of the Kubernetes API. I have written this book in the hope that it can teach new Kubernetes developers how to program, from general to specific, with the Kubernetes API in Go
