An Illustrated Guide to Veterinary Medical Terminology Third Edition - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Janet Amundson Romich, DVM, MS خلاصه: An Illustrated Guide to Veterinary Medical Terminology, Third Edition provides a visual approach to learning medical terms and understanding the basics of veterinary medicine. A systematic process of breaking down medical terms into their component parts allows readers to comprehend the root medical concepts and apply critical thinking skills when faced with new and unfamiliar medical terminology. Chapters progress from basic terminology related to anatomical positioning to body systems, and then to species- specific terminology. Case studies exemplify how medical terminology would be experienced in an actual veterinary practice.
Advanced Monitoring and Procedures for Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care - Original PDF
Advanced Monitoring and Procedures for Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jamie M. Burkitt Creedon, Harold Davis خلاصه: The textbook is organized roughly by organ system or general topic, but there is considerable overlap in some areas. For instance, some authors of device insertion chapters included a maintenance section, and maintenance of that device may also be covered in another chapter specifically on insertion site maintenance or artificial airway maintenance, and so on. Standardized protocols are included for procedures for which they were deemed useful and appropriate. These protocols are based on best-available evidence and guidelines, and where such citations were unavailable or inappropriate, they are based on author experience. We hope these protocols will help raise and equalize the standard of care across our profession, and serve as the backbone for a protocol book to use in your emergency or critical care practice.

Laboratory Handbook on Bovine Mastitis, 3rd Edition - PDF
نویسندگان: Pamela R. F. Adkins (Author), John R. Middleton (Editor), Lawrence Kenneth Fox (Editor), Gina Pighetti (Editor), Christina Petersson-Wolfe (Editor), National Mastitis Council (U.S.) خلاصه: The National Mastitis Council (NMC) released its third edition of the Laboratory Handbook on Bovine Mastitis. A 148-page book for laboratory diagnosticians, veterinarians, educators, students, researchers, technical specialists and dairy producers, it discusses the basic theories of microbial culture, mastitis diagnosis and pathogens, laboratory procedures and molecular pathogen diagnosis methods. Previous editions were published in 1987 and 1999. The new Chapter 4 addresses molecular techniques. These techniques are the most recent development in pathogen diagnosis and are becoming more accurate in identifying causative organisms by genus and species, as well as strain type. Mycoplasmas are now discussed in their own chapter – Chapter 8 – instead of with miscellaneous organisms. And, the new Chapter 12 covers on-farm culture systems. Users of the previous edition will find the current book’s format similar to the second edition. Microbial culture remains the backbone of mastitis diagnosis. Consequently, microbial culture methods are discussed and have been updated when appropriate. The book addresses the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques in terms of accuracy, specificity and sensitivity of detection, cost and turnaround time.

Concise Review of Veterinary Microbiology Second Edition - Original PDF
نویسندگان: P.J. Quinn ,B.K. Markey, F.C. Leonard, E.S. FitzPatrick, S. Fanning خلاصه: this book provided undergraduate veterinary students with a brief introduction to veterinary microbiology and diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms. Since its publication in 2003, there have been many changes in veterinary microbiology, some related to the classification of pathogenic microorganisms and others associated with the increased understanding of the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Developments in molecular aspects of microbiology have broadened the scope of diagnostic methods and have improved our understanding of the epidemiological characteristics of many infectious diseases. New developments relating to the emergence of antibacterial resistance are of particular importance in veterinary therapeutics and in public health.
THE VETERINARY LABORATORY AND FIELD MANUAL 3rd EDITION - Original PDF
THE VETERINARY LABORATORY AND FIELD MANUAL 3rd EDITION - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Susan C. Cork and Roy W. Halliwell خلاصه: As with the two preceding editions, this third edition of the Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual is a book made to be used. Dr Susan Cork and her contributing colleagues, have drawn on their extensive experience in training, laboratory diagnostics and field development activities to produce a practical, informative and accessible guide to the organization and operation of district and regional level diagnostic laboratories. Since the original publication of this book, the need for expanded veterinary diagnostic laboratory networks that extend into rural areas, has continued to grow. The ever increasing demand for animal protein and the concomitant increase in livestock populations, the emergence of new diseases and re-emergence of existing diseases, the expanded movement and trade of livestock, the increased contact of livestock and humans with wild animal species due to habitat incursions, and the growing risk of intentional disease introduction through bioterrorism, all underscore the need for improved disease surveillance and rapid diagnosis – efforts that require wellfunctioning district and regional laboratories as part of a national laboratory network. Early detection and early response are the fundamental elements of effective disease control and the ready availability of reliable basic laboratory services are essential in this regard. The new edition maintains the wellorganized structure of past editions, starting with the most useful Part 1: Laboratory and equipment. Chapter 1 focuses on setting up and using a laboratory service. This is followed by the practical and informative Chapter 2 on the selection, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies. Then, in Part II, in six subsequent chapters, the key diagnostic laboratory disciplines are addressed, including parasitology, microbiology, haematology, serology/immunology, clinical chemistry/toxicology, and pathology/cytology, each including the general underlying scientific principles, discussions of common diseases and procedures for sample collection and conduct of diagnostic tests. Part III then focuses on special topics including epidemiology, surveillance, common clinical presentations, wildlife health monitoring and disease surveillance, antimicrobial resistance, and arthropod vectors and related diseases. The book concludes with a range of appendices, which feature a review of common zoonotic diseases. At various locations throughout the text, Dr Cork and colleagues have updated existing content and added some new topics. Among the new subjects considered are: training, information management and the value of laboratory networks; hazard assessment and risk management; audits for quality assurance; the benefits and limitations of penside tests; assessing diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for field tests; the applications, implementation and limitations of new technologies; and a chapter on the OIE’s core missions in relation to laboratories Foreword working in the veterinary domain, contributed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The OIE is pleased to be associated with this new edition of the Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual. The OIE’s core strategic objectives, including risk management through transboundary disease control and international standard setting for the safe trade in animals and animal products, maintaining the global reporting system for animal diseases, and strengthening of national veterinary services, are all underpinned by the capacity and performance of national networks of veterinary diagnostic laboratories and the animal health investigation systems that deliver them quality samples. This newly revised manual can make an important contribution to ensuring the capacity and performance of those networks and therefore deserves a wide readership.

Rumenology - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Danilo Domingues Millen MarioDeBeniArrigoni RodrigoDiasLauritanoPacheco خلاصه: Ruminants thrive from the tropics to the Arctic Circle and serve mankind by making “something from nothing.” By readily harvesting and digesting diverse forage resources from inaccessible and nonarable land and forests, and converting otherwise wasted agricultural and industrial by-products and low-cost grain surpluses into milk, meat, and fi ber, ruminants make products that are highly prized by humans worldwide. For optimum economic effi ciency of production, ruminant producers must assure that both the host ruminant and the microbial population within the rumen receive an adequate but not excessive supply of essential nutrients and energy, appropriate rumen modifi ers, and proper animal care, management, and attention to maintain health and productivity. This text includes information and concepts compiled by specialists in microbiology, rumen function, and animal health around the globe. It is intended to supply both students and livestock producers with a framework in rumenology that when applied will help make ruminants more productive and sustainable by enhancing the effi ciency of conversion of energy and nutrients from land devoted to either grazing or crop production into useful and valued products while minimizing the adverse effects of ruminant production on the environment

Orange Empire: California and the Fruits of Eden - Original PDF
Orange Empire: California and the Fruits of Eden - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Douglas Cazaux Sackman خلاصه: This innovative history of California opens up new vistas on the interrelationship among culture, nature, and society by focusing on the state's signature export-the orange. From the 1870s onward, California oranges were packaged in crates bearing colorful images of an Edenic landscape. This book demystifies those lush images, revealing the orange as a manufactured product of the state's orange industry. Orange Empire brings together for the first time the full story of the orange industry-how growers, scientists, and workers transformed the natural and social landscape of California, turning it into a factory for the production of millions of oranges. That industry put up billboards in cities across the nation and placed enticing pictures of sun-kissed fruits into nearly every American's home. It convinced Americans that oranges could be consumed as embodiments of pure nature and talismans of good health. But, as this book shows, the tables were turned during the Great Depression when Upton Sinclair, Carey McWilliams, Dorothea Lange, and John Steinbeck made the Orange Empire into a symbol of what was wrong with America's relationship to nature.
