The Bookshop of the World: Making and Trading Books in the Dutch Golden Age - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Andrew Pettegree; Arthur der Weduwen خلاصه: The untold story of how the Dutch conquered the European book market and became the world's greatest bibliophiles—“an instant classic on Dutch book history” (BMGN - Low Countries Historical Review) "[An] excellent contribution to book history."—Robert Darnton, New York Review of Books The Dutch Golden Age has long been seen as the age of Rembrandt and Vermeer, whose paintings captured the public imagination and came to represent the marvel that was the Dutch Republic. Yet there is another, largely overlooked marvel in the Dutch world of the seventeenth century: books. In this fascinating account, Andrew Pettegree and Arthur der Weduwen show how the Dutch produced many more books than pictures and bought and owned more books per capita than any other part of Europe. Key innovations in marketing, book auctions, and newspaper advertising brought stability to a market where elsewhere publishers faced bankruptcy, and created a population uniquely well-informed and politically engaged. This book tells for the first time the remarkable story of the Dutch conquest of the European book world and shows the true extent to which these pious, prosperous, quarrelsome, and generous people were shaped by what they read.

Market Manipulation and Insider Trading: Regulatory Challenges in the United States of America, the European Union and the United Kingdom - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Nicholas Ryder; Ester Herlin-Karnell خلاصه: The European Union regime for fighting market manipulation and insider trading - commonly referred to as market abuse - was significantly reshuffled in the wake of the financial crisis of 2007/2008 and new legal instruments to fight market abuse were eventually adopted in 2014. In this monograph the authors identify the association between the financial crisis and market abuse, critically consider the legislative, policy and enforcement responses in the European Union, and contrast them with the approaches adopted by the United States of America and the United Kingdom respectively. The aftermath of the financial crisis, ongoing security concerns and increased legislation and policy responses to the fight against irregularities and market failures demonstrate that we need to understand, in context, the regulatory responses taken in this area. Specifically, the book investigates how the regulatory responses have changed over time since the start of the financial crisis. Market Manipulation and Insider Trading places the fight against market abuse in the broader framework of the fight against white collar crime and also considers some associated questions in order to better understand the contemporary market abuse regime.

Markets in Early Medieval Europe: Trading and 'Productive' Sites, 650 - 850 - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Katharina Ulmschneider; Tim Pestell خلاصه: Major sites such as Hamwic and Dorestad typically dominate any discussion of early medieval trade and emporia - this study is altogether atypical in many ways. Comprising nineteen papers taken from a conference held at Worcester College, Oxford in 2000, the focus here is very much on the smaller, more rural trading centres and inland markets of Northern Europe. The contributors reflect very different approaches to the material, including studies that examine up-to-date historical, archaeological and numismatic evidence from Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden dating from the 7th to 9th century. The authors consider the rather controversial use of metal-detecting in identifying and defining new sites and patterns of interaction and exchange, highlighting its positive contribution. Contributors include Mark Blackburn, David Griffiths, Lars Jorgensen, Michael Metcalf, Julian D Richards, Peter Sawyer and Astrid Tummuscheit.

Ascent and Decline of Native and Colonial Trading : Tale of Four Indian Cities - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Vijay K. Seth خلاصه: The another surprising aspect regarding unawareness about history is that people are unaware of aspects of all the history of the cities where they live and die, how that particular city was conquered, the number of years that have elapsed since its last occupation, how the conquerors dealt with its people, how they transacted their affairs, how they lived and went about doing things, in what manner they die, and how time and society have treated them, their wives, families, followers and supporters. —Zia-ud Din Barani (1357, 1) Of course, ideas do not rain down from heaven. Commercial and urban societ- ies, which could afford to sustain a substantial number of people living by their wits rather than having to toil in the fields, were necessary if intellectual ideas were to be created .... From this competitive natural selection process, changes in the intellectual environment emerged, with far-reaching consequences for the creation of ‘modern’ polities and economies. —Joel Mokyr (2009, 2)

Embrace the Mayhem: An evidence based approach to trading success - Original PDF
Embrace the Mayhem: An evidence based approach to trading success - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Robot Wealth خلاصه: How this book is organised You can imagine this book is split into two halves: The first half is all about arming you with skepticism, diligence and healthy expectations. Its purpose is to protect you from expensive failed strategies built on bad advice or assumptions. It’s to guard you against greedy brokers and subtle deceptions in “harmless” trading content. It’s crucial you understand this before moving on. So, please be patient in going through these initial chapters. The second half of this book is where we unravel the good stuff. We’ll talk about exactly what works in the markets, including the strategies, inefficiencies and approach we’ve used to grow capital into the 8-figures for ourselves and our firms. We’ll also talk about how you can harness this approach even in the face of retail-level restrictions, and the next steps you may want to consider to begin this journey on the right foot. It’s hard to communicate just how much of a head start this will give you, especially over where I started out. If your excitement evaporates after we lay out this vision, then consider this time well spent. You’ve been spared valuable years and hard-earned dollars on a pursuit that requires complete, obsessive devotion over a long period of time in order to succeed. If on the other hand you are more excited than ever after discovering the vision and roadmap we lay out, then let’s get after it! You are among a rare breed of individuals destined for a fascinating, stimulating and potentially very profitable lifelong journey. But before we do that fun stuff, you probably want to know why you should listen to us. Good on you for being skeptical. Here’s a little about us
Trading Spaces: The Colonial Marketplace and the Foundations of American Capitalism - Original PDF
Trading Spaces: The Colonial Marketplace and the Foundations of American Capitalism - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Emma Hart خلاصه: When we talk about the economy, “the market” is often just an abstraction. While the exchange of goods was historically tied to a particular place, capitalism has gradually eroded this connection to create our current global trading systems. In Trading Spaces, Emma Hart argues that Britain’s colonization of North America was a key moment in the market’s shift from place to idea, with major consequences for the character of the American economy. Hart’s book takes in the shops, auction sites, wharves, taverns, fairs, and homes of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century America—places where new mechanisms and conventions of trade arose as Europeans re-created or adapted continental methods to new surroundings. Since those earlier conventions tended to rely on regulation more than their colonial offspring did, what emerged in early America was a less fettered brand of capitalism. By the nineteenth century this had evolved into a market economy that would not look too foreign to contemporary Americans. To tell this complex transnational story of how our markets came to be, Hart looks back farther than most historians of US capitalism, rooting these markets in the norms of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. Perhaps most important, this is not a story of specific commodity markets over time but rather is a history of the trading spaces themselves: the physical sites in which the grubby work of commerce occurred and where the market itself was born.
