How Math Can Save Your Life: (And Make You Rich, Help You Find The One, and Avert Catastrophes) - PDF
نویسندگان: James D. Stein خلاصه: It's a commonplace observation that the better the mathematician, the worse he or she generally is at balancing a checkbook. It's not a paradox: simple arithmetic is just too boring to hold a bright, abstract thinker's attention. So perhaps this can account for what happened in Chapter 10, "How Math Can Fix the Economy." In the table titled "The S&P Tulip Index, 1975-2007," the author looks at the ratio over a period of years of the year-end closing price of the S&P500 to average household income. Unfortunately, he used REAL (inflation adjusted) household income instead of CURRENT household income. The S&P500 closing prices, of course, are in CURRENT dollars, so the ratio, to make sense, has to be CURRENT dollars to CURRENT dollars. I immediately noticed something was wrong when I saw in the table that average household income supposedly rose only 40 percent from 1975 to 2007. In fact average household income rose 391 percent in CURRENT dollars! (I used the same Census Bureau spreadsheet as the author, but the correct column -- "Current dollars.") With this correction in place, the "S&P Tulip Index" isn't nearly as exuberant at the 1999 stock market peak: a ratio of 4.10 instead of the author's ratio of 16.29. There is also a conceptual problem with the author's "S&P Tulip Index." It doesn't take into account population growth. If the number of households doubled from 1975 to 2007, you might reasonably expect the S&P500 to double as well, even if average household income stayed constant. Sadly, the same mistake of REAL versus CURRENT dollars afflicts the next table too, "The Average Home Price Tulip Index, 1975-2007."

نویسندگان: Bob Brecher خلاصه: My intention in this book is polemical, but not rhetorical. For while I shall try to persuade readers that the whole idea of a liberal morality is in the end untenable, the very possibility of my doing so rests on a sense of, and a confidence in, a rationality which it is liberalism’s great achievement to have bequeathed us. Thus an underlying theme is that liberalism’s loss of confidence in a universal and impartial rationality, resulting in its transformation into the series of relativisms now described as postmodernism, is misplaced; but that the seeds of this transformation have lain dormant in the liberal tradition. In particular, it is liberalism’s difficulties in justifying morality which are central to that transfor mation and which show why, its achievements notwithstanding, liberal morality is in the end conceptually inadequate to the point of being corrosive. My argument is simply that liberal morality is unsustainable because it cannot offer a rationally adequate account either of morality as a fact of everyday life or of any possible justification of moral principles and moral demands. I hope to lay the ground, in the longer run, for the possibility of a thoroughly rationalistic account and justification of morality; to refute both amoralists who reject the claims of morality upon them and (philosophical) sceptics who, however they may actually behave, reject the possibility of any rational justification of (even their own) moral actions and judgements. In rejecting liberal morality and liberal theories of morality, then, I am emphatically not rejecting the liberal conception of rationality. In particular, I share the aspirations of classical no less than later nineteenth- and earlier twentieth-century liberals to a universal and impartial rationality—even if imperfectly realized, in that tradition as elsewhere, and even if too often limited to questions of means rather than extending also to ends

Save Your Retirement: What to Do If You Haven't Saved Enough or If Your Investments Were Devastated by the Market Meltdown - PDF
نویسندگان: Frank Armstrong, Paul B. Brown خلاصه: The cover of this book caught my eye at the bookstore and when I saw on the back that everyone from MONEY to BUSINESSWEEK was raving about it, I knew it was a financial must-read! The authors are so clear and concise and really helped me understand concepts that before seemed "greek to me." I'm always weary of personal finance books for giving people unrealistic ideas about how to get rich. This one is so great because it's no bs. If you can't afford to retire, the authors aren't going to tell you that you can. They know people saw their 401(k)s evaporate in the financial crisis and they're here to tell you what to do now. I highly recommend this book if you care a dime about your financial future.

Have You Truly Been Born Again of Water and the Spirit? - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Paul C. Jong خلاصه: This is the first book in this age to preach the gospel of the baptism and the blood of Jesus as it is written in the Scriptures. The true gospel clearly tells us that He took away all our sins through His baptism and took over judgment for all our sins on the Cross. I am sure that there is no other book that preaches ‘the gospel of the water and the blood’ more clearly and faithfully than this one. The Samaritan woman who drank from the well of Jacob everyday couldn’t quench her spiritual thirst, but when she drank the water of life from Jesus, she earned salvation and thus, quenched her thirst immediately and forever. All of humankind must be born again. We have to be born again through our faiths, be redeemed from all our sins and become righteous. For only then can we enter the eternal Kingdom of Heaven. The Bible says, ''Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God'' (John 3:5). ''To be born again of water and the Spirit'' is the only way we can enter the eternal Kingdom of God. What, then, is this ‘water’ and ‘the Spirit’ that allows us to be born again? The ‘water’ in the Bible refers to ‘the baptism of Jesus.’ Why was Jesus, who is God, baptized by John the Baptist? Was it to show His humility? Was it to proclaim Himself the Messiah? No, it wasn’t. When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist by means of ‘the laying on of hands’ (Leviticus 16:21), it was ‘one Man’s righteous act’ (Romans 5:18), which took away all the sins of humankind. In the Old Testament, God gave Israel the merciful law of redemption. This was so that on the Day of Atonement, all the sins of Israel for that year could be expiated through the High Priest, Aaron, by laying his hands on the head of the ‘scapegoat’ and passing all the sins onto that scapegoat. These were the words of revelation, which foretold the sacrifice of eternal atonement. It revealed the truth that all the sins of humanity would be passed onto Jesus all at once, who came in the flesh of a man, according to the will of the Father. And He was baptized by John the Baptist who was the descendant of Aaron and the representative of all humankind. When Jesus was baptized, He said to John, ''Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness'' (Matthew 3:15). Here, ‘for thus’ means ‘by the laying on of hands,’ in order to pass all the sins of the world onto Jesus, so that all righteousness might be fulfilled for all of us. The word ‘righteousness’ is ‘dikaiosune’ in Greek, and its meaning is ''the fairest state'' or ''to be just in character or deeds with the implication of being righteous or fitting.'' Jesus had fulfilled all righteousness for all people through His baptism in a just and fitting manner. Because Jesus took on all the sins of people through His baptism, the next day, John the Baptist testified, ''Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!'' (John 1:29) With all the sins of humankind on His shoulders, Jesus walked toward the Cross. He vicariously took the judgment for all the sins He had taken on Himself through His baptism. He died on the Cross, saying, ''It is finished'' (John 19:30). He took all our sins onto Himself and received the complete judgment for them in our place.

If You Turned into a Monster: Transformation Through Play: A Body-Centered Approach to Play Therapy - PDF
نویسندگان: Dennis McCarthy خلاصه: Draw me a picture of what you would look like if you turned into a monster. Dennis McCarthy's work with distressed or traumatized children begins with an exercise that is simple but very effective: he invites the child to communicate with him in their own way, through the non-verbal language of play. Using case studies from his clinical experience and with numerous children's monster drawings, McCarthy lets the meaningful self-expression of the child take centre stage. He demonstrates that being allowed to play, move and draw impulsively and creatively in the supportive presence of the therapist is in fact the beginning of the therapeutic process. These activities are shown to be more therapeutic for the child in practical terms than the interpretation of the clues it provides about the child's state of mind. This very accessible book will be inspiring reading for play therapists and other professionals working therapeutically with young children and their families.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relationships - Original PDF
نویسندگان: John Gray خلاصه: Popular marriage counselor and seminar leader John Gray provides a unique, practical and proven way for men and women to communicate and relate better by acknowledging the differences between them. Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to earth and amnesia set in: they forgot they were from different planets. Using this metaphor to illustrate the commonly occurring conflicts between men and women, Gray explains how these differences can come between the sexes and prohibit mutually fulfilling loving relationships. Based on years of successful counseling of couples, he gives advice on how to counteract these differences in communication styles, emotional needs and modes of behavior to promote a greater understanding between individual partners. Gray shows how men and women react differently in conversation and how their relationships are affected by male intimacy cycles (''get close'', ''back off''), and female self-esteem fluctuations (''I'm okay'', ''I'm not okay''). He encourages readers to accept the other gender's particular way of expressing love, and helps men and women learn how to fulfill each other's emotional needs. With practical suggestions on how to reduce conflict, crucial information on how to interpret a partner's behavior and methods for preventing emotional ''trash from the past'' from invading new relationships, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus is a valuable tool for couples who want to develop deeper and more satisfying relationships with their partners.
