Uncle Sam Wants You: World War I and the Making of the Modern American Citizen - PDF
نویسندگان: Christopher Capozzola خلاصه: In April 1917, the United States embarked on World War I--with little history of conscription, an army smaller than Romania's, and a political culture that saw little role for the federal government other than delivering the mail. Uncle Sam Wants You tells the gripping story of the American homefront in World War I, revealing how the tensions of mass mobilization led to a significant increase in power in Washington.Christopher Capozzola shows how, in the absence of a strong federal government, Americans at first mobilized society by stressing duty, obligation, and responsibility over rights and freedoms. In clubs, schools, churches, and workplaces, Americans governed each other. But the heated temper of war quickly unleashed coercion on an unprecedented scale, making wartime America the scene of some of the nation's most serious political violence, including notorious episodes of outright mob violence. To solve this problem, Americans turned over increasing amounts of power to state institutions. In the end, whether they were some of the four million men drafted under the Selective Service Act or the tens of millions of homefront volunteers--or counted themselves among the thousands of conscientious objectors, anti-war radicals, or German enemy aliens--Americans of the World War I era created a new American state, and new ways of being American citizens.Based on a rich array of sources that capture the voices of both political leaders and ordinary Americans, Uncle Sam Wants You offers a vivid and provocative new interpretation of American political history.

Show Us How You Do It: Marshall Keeble and the Rise of Black Churches of Christ in the United States, 1914-1968 (Religion & American Culture) - PDF
نویسندگان: Edward J. Robinson خلاصه: Marshall Keeble (1878–1968) was the premier evangelist in black Churches of Christ from 1931 until his death in 1968. Born and reared in middle Tennessee, Keeble came under the influence of Preston Taylor, Samuel Womack, and Alexander Campbell, as well as the social influence of Booker T. Washington. In 1914, Keeble committed himself to full-time evangelism and by the 1920s had established himself as a noteworthy preacher. By the time of his death, he reportedly had baptized 40,000 people and had established more than 200 congregations, some of which still flourish today. Show Us How You Do It is the first critical study of Keeble and his evangelical career. Based on primary sources, Edward Robinson reconstructs the life, public ministry, missionary activities, and the reception of Keeble among Churches of Christ. He also explores Keeble’s relationship with white businessmen and how he secured white support in establishing a large fellowship of African American Churches of Christ in the South. Show Us How You Do It details Keeble’s theology, ethos, and polemics toward other churches. Robinson demonstrates Keeble’s legacy in the labor of his African American co-workers and of the students who attended Nashville Christian Institute. Of the approximately 2.5 million members of the Churches of Christ in the U.S., an estimated 10 percent are African-Americans, and many in this fellowship can trace their affiliation to Keeble and to those whom he trained.

The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief - Epub + Converted PDF
نویسندگان: Francis S. Collins خلاصه: An instant bestseller from Templeton Prize–winning author Francis S. Collins, The Language of God provides the best argument for the integration of faith and logic since C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity. It has long been believed that science and faith cannot mingle. Faith rejects the rational, while science restricts us to a life with no meaning beyond the physical. It is an irreconcilable war between two polar-opposite ways of thinking and living. Written for believers, agnostics, and atheists alike, The Language of God provides a testament to the power of faith in the midst of suffering without faltering from its logical stride. Readers will be inspired by Collin’s personal story of struggling with doubt, as well as the many revelations of the wonder of God’s creation that will forever shape the way they view the world around them.
Silent Conflict A Hidden History of Early Soviet-Western Relations - Original PDF
Silent Conflict A Hidden History of Early Soviet-Western Relations - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Michael Jabara Carley خلاصه: It is not easy to study the history of Soviet foreign policy or Soviet relations with the West. Until the beginning of the 1990s the Soviet archives were closed tight. After the collapse and dismemberment of the Soviet Union in 1991, the archives gradually opened, but only partially. Sometimes papers were opened only to be closed again. Russian archivists had tens of thou- sands of papki, or files, in their care and, not always knowing what was in them, were reluctant to open them to researchers. These include, inter alia, the important party archives for the inter-war years at Rossiiskii gosudarstven- nyi arkhiv sotsial’no-politicheskoi istorii (RGASPI) and the diplomatic papers of the Arkhiv vneshnei politiki Rossiiskoi Federatsii (AVPRF), the archives of the Russian foreign ministry. In AVPRF there were and are all sorts of dif- ficulties. Researchers have no access to inventories, so it’s like playing poker when asking archivists for files. Sometimes the files are rich, and you win, and sometimes not, and you lose. Computers were forbidden for a number of years, and photocopies were so costly as to make a new arrival gasp for air. You got used to the impediments and learned to function around them. The excitement of new discoveries and uncharted ground made you forget the numerous irritations
