You Have to Pay for the Public Life: Selected Essays of Charles W. Moore - PDF
نویسندگان: Charles W. Moore, Kevin Keim خلاصه: Architect Charles Moore (1925-1993) was not only celebrated for his designs; he was also an admired writer and teacher. Though he wrote clearly and passionately about places, he was perhaps unique in avoiding the tone and stance of the personal manifesto. Through his buildings, books, and travels, Moore consistently sought insights into the questions that always underlie architecture and design: What does it mean to make a place, and how do we inhabit those places? How do we continue to build upon but respect the landscape? How do we reconcile democracy and private land ownership? What is original? What is taste? What is the relationship between past and present? How do we involve inhabitants in making places? Finally, what is public life? As the world becomes smaller, and the uniqueness of places and landscapes gives way to sameness, Moore's celebration of the vernacular and of the surprising are more relevant than ever. The pieces in this book span the years 1952 to 1993 and engage a myriad of topics and movements, such as contextualism, community participation, collaboration, environmentally sensitive design, and historic preservation. The essays in this book reflect as well Moore's scholarship, humanism, urbanity, and great wit.

TRIZ POWER TOOLS Skill # 1 Resolving Contradictions The Skill that Will Give You the Confidence to Do the Rest - PDF
نویسندگان: Collaborative Authors خلاصه: If you are reading the PDF format—navigate the algorithms with the “Bookmarks” to the left. L1, L2, L3 correspond to levels of the algorithm. The levels are hierarchal; you can go as deeply as required to resolve your problem. Lower levels (L1, L2) have consolidated methods. If you are using the book then use the Table of Contents for the Algorithm) Resolving contradictions is one of the most useful and fundamental aspects of TRIZ because it greatly expands the solution space. It allows us to consider turning many more knobs than we would normally be allowed to turn. Resolving contradictions allows us to improve something without making other features worse. At the heart of most contradictions is a knob that must have two settings. For instance, we talked about a vehicle that needed to have a small volume in order to create low drag and a large volume to carry lots of cargo. This appears to be physically impossible, yet we will try to make this happen. Common Approaches for Dealing with Contradictions There are several approaches to dealing with contradictions: 1) Discount one or both of the conflicting properties. This is a common approach used in theological, political, negotiation or historical settings. . 2) Compromise somewhere between both conflicting properties. This is a standard approach taught in most schools and widely adopted throughout industry for resolving problems of all genre. 3) Deliver both properties to the required degree by resolving the contradiction. This is an unusual approach that can apply to problems of all type. 4) Allow only one of the properties and then compensate by turning another knob. This is also a valid approach which we will call “compensation”. The first approach of discounting one or the other conflicting properties, can be referred to as the ostrich approach or throwing the hand grenade back over the wall. Either we do not face the problem or we force someone else to deal with the problem. In this case we would either deny that the drag existed or we would deny that the volume was too small. As mentioned, this approach is less common in the world of physics, but it can happen in the realm of marketing. For this text, we will not discount either property but rather assume that we are only dealing with situations where the requirement for both properties are valid because we have thoroughly analyzed the situation The second approach is to compromise and make the volume larger but not “too large”. The problem with this thinking is that we now guarantee risk. If we are building the vehicle for public sale, we may find that the cost of operation is too high for some customers and the volume too low for others. In order to perform an artful compromise a lot of data needs to be collected and models built. This can be time consuming. In addition, it is likely that this risky situation that will be perpetuated in future generations. Due to these drawbacks, we will not be applying this approach in this text. The third approach is to resolve the contradiction without compromising. Nobody, including future generations, needs to live with the problem. When we learn how to do this, we will find that there are a lot more knobs that we can consider turning to solve problems. This skill is liberating to problem solvers who find that the solution space is much larger than they supposed.

نویسندگان: Krishnamurti Jiddu خلاصه: BANARAS, INDIA 4TH JANUARY 1954 1ST TALK TO STUDENTS AT RAJGHAT SCHOOL I suppose most of you understand English. Don't you? It does not matter if you do not, as your teachers and your elders understand English. Perhaps you would ask them afterwards to explain what I have been talking about make a point of asking them won't you? Because what we are going to discuss for the next three or four weeks is very important; we are going to discuss what is education and what are its implications, not just passing examination but the whole implication of being educated. So, as we are going to talk about that every day please ask your teachers, if you do not understand what I am saying now, to explain carefully what we have talked. Also, after I have talked, perhaps you would ask questions. Because these talks are meant primarily for students and if the older people want to ask questions, they can only ask questions that will help the students to understand, that explain further the problem. If the older people would ask questions so as to help students, then their questions will be useful. To ask questions with their own personal problems will not help the students. Don't you ask yourself why you are being educated? Do you know why you are being educated, and what does that education mean? As we know, education is to go to schools, learn how to read and write, to pass examinations and to play a few games; and after you leave the school, you go to the college, there again study very very hard for a few months or a few years, pass an examination and then get a job; and then, you forget all about what you have learnt. Is it not that, what we call education? Do you understand what I am talking about? Is it all that we do? If you are girls you pass a few examinations, B.A. or M.A., marry and become cooks or something else and then have children; and all the education that you have got for a number of years is useless. You know how to speak English, you are a little bit more clever, a little bit more tidy, a little bit more clean, that is all, is it not? And the boys get a technical job, or become clerks, or get some kind of governmental job, and that finishes, does it not? You see what we call living is to get a job, to have children, raise a family and to know how to read and write and to be able to read newspapers or magazines, to discuss, to cleverly argue about something or other. That is what we call education, is it not? Have you noticed your own parents, your own elder people? They have passed examinations, they have got some jobs and they know how to read and write. Is it all what we call education? Education is something much more different, is it not? It is to help you not only to get a job in the world but also how to meet the world. Is it not? You know what the world is. In the world, there is competition. You know what competition means - each man out for himself, struggling to get the best pushing the others aside. In the world, there are wars, there are class divisions and the fight between them. In the world, every man is trying to get a better job, to keep on rising; if you are a clerk, you try to get a little higher and so fight all the time. Have you not noticed it? If you have a car, you want a bigger So, there is that constant fight going on, not only within ourselves but with all our neighbours. Then there is the war that kills, which destroys people, like the last war millions were killed, wounded or maimed. Our life is all this political struggle. And also, life is religion is it not? What we call religion is rituals going to temples, putting on something like the sacred thread, mumbling some words, or following some guru. Life is also, is it not?, the fear of dying, fear of living, fear of what people say and do not say, fear of not knowing where one is going fear of losing a job, fear of opinion. So, life is something extraordinarily complex, is it not? You know what that word `complex' means? Very intricate, it is not just simple which you just follow; it is very very difficult, many many things are involved.

The book: On the taboo against knowing who you are - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Alan Watts خلاصه: My dad gave me this book when I was traveling back to college sophomore year. If you've read it you might think, "Oh, that is such a sweet and special gift," so maybe I should clarify: he stumbled across it when he was cleaning out his bookshelves and he basically just tossed it at me. There wasn't anything ceremonious about it. Anyway, I really liked it. It was my literary introduction to Zen philosophy, and it resonated with me immediately. Incidentally, I read it three months after my first trip. I think that had a lot to do with my appreciation of it. Drawbacks: Watts quotes Jesus a few times. When you go to look up the quote, it's from a non-canonical gospel, I think The Gospel of Thomas. This made it instantly lose cred with my Christian biblical scholar friend with whom I tried to share it ("Jesus never said that!!"). The more I read of Watts, the more I found him making unsupported claims against modern Christianity. Also, he tends to say the same thing in all of his books, over and over, so if you've read one, you've basically read 'em all. Still, it's a great book for reminding yourself that you always have the here and now to just be. I've reread parts of it several times.

Working With You is Killing Me: Freeing Yourself from Emotional Traps at Work - PDF
نویسندگان: Katherine Crowley, Kathi Elster خلاصه: While this book is intended for those in the work force, as a teacher it is also applicable. A colleague and I are reading this in order to deal with those we work with and to try to learn new strategies for "staying alive" in our school. The strategies and definitions in this book are helping me to understand those individuals who are "killing" me. This comprehensive book is great for understanding my reaction to those who trip my trigger and how to modify my reaction so I might better cope with those whose work ethic is not the same as mine.

نویسندگان: Bruce Rogers خلاصه: "You say tuh-MAY-toe. I say tum-AH-toe." Learn about the Kanajun Langweej; find out where abracadabra and the F-word come from; understand the connection between assassins and eating hash and what it really means when the media describe a politician as "tired." There's probably lots about English that you don't know: how do you pronounce schism, anyway? And, if you're talking to an English speaking audience is it PA-ris, or pa-REE? Spell checkers are a handy invention when we write, but when it comes to using the appropriate word and saying it so others will understand, you're on your own. And how you say, is often as important as what you say. We have all cringed with embarrassment, at one time or another, upon hearing a word incorrectly used or pronounced - or after doing so ourselves. Written with a Canadian English-speaking audience in mind, You Can Say That Again! A Fun Approach to Sounding Better When You Open Your Mouth to Speak will teach you how to speak properly - even if you thought you already knew how - and save you from humiliating slip ups. At the very least, a verbal miscue will lead to a temporary loss of credibility; at its worst, the faux pas can be career threatening. Good speech, on the other hand, establishes credibility and enhances authority. This book will help you sound as though you know what you are talking about. You Can Say That Again! has a language quiz in every chapter, along with lists of word origins, political and business terms, sports and science bloopers, puns, limericks, and euphemisms. There's a pronunciation guide for major languages, and help for those who want to join the battle against jargon, slang, and clichs. It also offers tips on preparation and presentation for public speaking, whether at a social or business occasion, or on radio or television. Not a dictionary, but a collection of useful word information, You Can Say That Again! is an indispensable guide both to correct usage and pronunciation. With clear instructions, detailed lists, and sound advice, it will help the reader improve speech, sound better, and express thoughts more clearly.
