Being Me, Loving You: A Practical Guide to Extraordinary Relationships - PDF
نویسندگان: Marshall B. Rosenberg PhD خلاصه: After constantly reading and re-reading Non Violent Communication and the workbook, finding tons of valuable information in it and being able to put it into practice, I don't feel this bookLET gave me anything new. First I was unaware this was just a booklet and not a full book , until I got it. It may have declared that in the description but I didn't pay attention! Second, the format of using blurbs from various other participants, seminars and what not makes it very difficult to follow along. I had to stop and was not able to make it all the way through. I jsut had to reread the same passages two and three times just to understand them. That being said I am a college educated, well read individual therefore reading is not a challenge for me, but this booklet was. :-( I had very high expectations for this book after reading NonViolent Communication!

The Calculus Lifesaver: All the Tools You Need to Excel at Calculus (Princeton Lifesaver Study Guides) - PDF
نویسندگان: Adrian Banner خلاصه: For many students, calculus can be the most mystifying and frustrating course they will ever take. The Calculus Lifesaver provides students with the essential tools they need not only to learn calculus, but to excel at it. All of the material in this user-friendly study guide has been proven to get results. The book arose from Adrian Banner's popular calculus review course at Princeton University, which he developed especially for students who are motivated to earn A's but get only average grades on exams. The complete course will be available for free on the Web in a series of videotaped lectures. This study guide works as a supplement to any single-variable calculus course or textbook. Coupled with a selection of exercises, the book can also be used as a textbook in its own right. The style is informal, non-intimidating, and even entertaining, without sacrificing comprehensiveness. The author elaborates standard course material with scores of detailed examples that treat the reader to an "inner monologue"--the train of thought students should be following in order to solve the problem--providing the necessary reasoning as well as the solution. The book's emphasis is on building problem-solving skills. Examples range from easy to difficult and illustrate the in-depth presentation of theory. The Calculus Lifesaver combines ease of use and readability with the depth of content and mathematical rigor of the best calculus textbooks. It is an indispensable volume for any student seeking to master calculus. Serves as a companion to any single-variable calculus textbook Informal, entertaining, and not intimidating Informative videos that follow the book--a full forty-eight hours of Banner's Princeton calculus-review course--is available at Adrian Banner lectures More than 475 examples (ranging from easy to hard) provide step-by-step reasoning Theorems and methods justified and connections made to actual practice Difficult topics such as improper integrals and infinite series covered in detail Tried and tested by students taking freshman calculus

Your Brain and Your Self: What You Need to Know - PDF
نویسندگان: Jacques Neirynck, Laurence Garey (auth.) خلاصه: How does my brain work? Why am I conscious? Where is my memory? Is what I perceive around me reality or just an illusion? We all ask these questions, which we could sum up in a single question: Who am I? How is it that I have memories and that I feel I exist? What does it mean that my mind is free in time and space, and yet I am imprisoned in a body that is doomed to disappear? What happens to my mind when my body disappears? What are the risks of my suffering from a brain disease? Could my whole being eclipse because of a disease in which my body survives but my mind ceases to exist? What remedies are there? What hope does reasearch hold out? Recent discoveries about the brain allow us to ask such questions more pointedly, hoping to define more clearly the relations of the brain with the mind, of man with his body. This book is based on numerous discussions with specialists. It attempts to determine the state of the art. It is organized in chapters that can be read in continuity, but it is equally possible to discover the chapters in a different way.

Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating - PDF
Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating - PDF
نویسندگان: Jeffrey M. Smith خلاصه: I usually buy my books at Amazon, but since I was in Borders, I decided to skim through it to see if it was worth buying for a detailed read. By training, I'm an engineer, but I did a stint in biochemical research, so I think I'm on pretty firm ground in reviewing this collection of propaganda and bad science. Here's what you need to know about the entire subject of genetically modified organisms or genetic engineering without reading this annoyingly inaccurate book: We don't know what we don't know. That's it. GMOs and the entire discipline of GE could be an accident waiting to happen. Or it could be that one day... in the future...it could help the world in one way or another, but we just don't have enough information. So at this point everyone is "talking their book." It's like our current (American) political situation. If you're a Democrat anything a Republican says can be summarily dismissed just because they are not Democats...and of course, vice versa...even if what the other person says is fact. So scientists from companies like Monsanto will talk up all the benefits of their research...and how utterly safe and completely tested their products are...and scientists working for groups that are against this ...for monetary or other reasons, will only offer doomsday scenarios. But neither side has any clue. Remember, there was a time when "we" all believed that the Earth was flat, and that the Sun revolved about the Earth...and scientists at that time could prove it. Just before we set off the first nuclear weapon, there were scientists who were concerned that this thing, this nuclear thing, if allowed to be detonated would ignite the atmosphere with catastrophic results. it's not that they were wrong, it's that we got lucky. There just was no way that the bomb was not going to be set off...."too much was at stake"....whatever that means. If you really want to learn about genetic engineering...and you want to teach the entire family about it,in a relatively PG environment, go to your DVD collection, or your friendly online streaming facility and watch Jurassic Park - the original...and pay careful attention to the movie that they watch in the beginning and to Jeff Goldblum's character, Ian Malcolm. The movie has pretty good science - especially the prescient comment by Malcolm that "Nature finds a way." My only concern at this point is that there is an effort afoot (by powerful interests, of course) to stop the labeling of GE products. Like I said, I don't know what I don't know, so I am really not for or against the industry, but I would like to have the opportunity to decide if I want to eat, wash with, wear or be near products that didn't take the evolution route (Geez,I just realized, what if you, dear reader, don't believe in evolution - then we have bigger problems) There is no way to stop "progress." No way. Highways and cars and TVs and computer monitors, microwaves and cellphones all had detractors - all were going to give us brain cancer, poison our foods destroy the atmospher and so on. And there was a group of people who actually got their way for a brief period of time and prevented those of us who enjoy Scotch from having any...for shame... But progress will win out...it's inevitable.. The really hard part about progress, especially that now that we "know everything about everything" is that we don't progress ourselves into oblivion....

When a Gene Makes You Smell Like a Fish: And Other Amazing Tales about the Genes in Your Body - PDF
نویسندگان: Lisa Seachrist Chiu, Judith A. Seachrist خلاصه: This book is a good read if your into understanding genetics and all the weird quirks that make people the way they are. If you have no background in science, there will be parts that go over your head. Even if you do enjoy science, there are sections that do bore but are necessary its purpose. Overall, it was fun and enlightening. I am a biology major so I am somewhat bias.
Better Looking, Better Living, Better Loving: How Chemistry can Help You Achieve Life's Goals - PDF
Better Looking, Better Living, Better Loving: How Chemistry can Help You Achieve Life's Goals - PDF
نویسندگان: John Emsley خلاصه: John Emsley has carved out quite a niche for himself in writing popular books (not textbooks) dedicated to scientific matters in general, and chemistry matters in particular. One of his more inspired titles is "Better Looking, Better Living, Better Loving", which has a very unfortunate subtitle "How Chemistry Can Help You Achieve Life's Goals". The subtitle makes the book sound like a how-to book (Make your own mascara! Better breath through home-made mouthwash!) It is NOT a how-to book, but rather a how-it-is-done book. In a wide-ranging series of short essays, Emsley covers most consumer topics that exist at the intersection of chemistry and the personal consumer, including food, plastic containers, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, birth control, cleaning products (for humans, clothes, and dishes), etc.The beauty of this book is that it can be picked up and read starting anywhere, and is therefore an ideal bathroom book (especially since there are a lot of bathroom-related topics!) or coffee table book (again, since there are a lot of food topics!). This makes some of the topics a little repetative for someone reading the book cover-to-cover over the course of a few days or weeks, but it's a better choice for a book of this type. I think the science is readily understandable to the average person (although it might be hard for me to judge, being a chemistry teacher), and there is a glossary for more scientific terms and broadened explanations. More importantly, the science is correct and rigorous while still presented in a palatable manner.I think North American readers will notice the no-nonsense style of writing. British authors (at least, scientific ones) tend to be more forthright than their American cousins, and it's especially noticable in this book's discussions on abortion and rape - two topics that American authors would couch in more subtle terms, with at least an acknowledgement of the cultural/moral issues associated with them. Similarly, most Americans are used to hedging their bets: Emsley comes right out and tells people that they are wrong to believe that aluminum has anything to do with Alzheimers, for example, and debunks other "common knowledge" associations just as ruthlessly, if they been scientifically demonstrated to be wrong. In terms of sheer readability, I think I prefer Joe Schwarcz's books that cover similar terrain. However, Emsley's book is more focussed and logically presented. It's certainly interesting, certainly entertaining, and even the best-read chemist is likely to learn something s/he didn't know. Unfortunately, the price is excessive compared to other books of this type (even other Emsley titles) - what gives, Amazon?

It's not you, it's biology: the real reason men and women are different - PDF
نویسندگان: Joe Quirk خلاصه: One of the all-time best books I've read on men, women, and how we got that way. Deft, literate, informed, but laugh-out-loud funny, by a writer who uses words the way Van Gogh used paint.Doubtless thanks to its original "Sperm Are From Men . . ." title, prudes and Bible-thumpers prevented this book from being a best-seller in its first incarnation. But it's the all-time easiest way to teach any teenager about the birds, the bees, and that hot number who sits down front in Math class and won't ever smile back. Just leave this book visible around the house. It'll promptly disappear for a week or so. You'll have lots less explaining to do.But first, read it yourself! You'll learn why there are several millions different genders (according to which switches get tripped in the developing fetus); why being gay is genetic, why bowerbirds go to all that trouble, why men and women have evolved different mating strategies, why gorillas are so poorly endowed, and other arcana you'll never forget. As a side benefit, Quirk is one of the true masters at coining aphorisms. His book is a enriched-uranium mine for anyone who has to utter sentences in public!
