Trading Communities in the Roman World: A Micro-Economic and Institutional Perspective - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Taco T. Terpstra خلاصه: Ancient Roman trade was severely hampered by slow transportation and by the absence state help in enforcing contracts. Here Terpstra offers a new explanation of how traders in the Roman Empire overcame these difficulties. Previous theories have focused heavily on dependent labour, arguing that transactions overseas were conducted through slaves and freedmen. Taco Terpstra argues on the contrary that the key to understanding long-distance trade in the Roman Empire is not patron-client or master-slave relationships, but the social bonds between ethnic groups of foreign traders living overseas and the local communities they joined. Geographical origin thus formed the key bond in constructing trade networks, with expulsion from such networks the ultimate sanction for traders who did not fulfill their contracts.

The science of algorithmic trading and portfolio management - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Kissell, Robert خلاصه: Algorithmic trading represents the computerized executions of financial instruments. Algorithms trade stocks, bonds, currencies, and a plethora of financial derivatives. Algorithms are also fundamental to investment strategies and trading goals. The new era of trading provides investors with more efficient executions while lowering transaction costs—the result, improved portfolio performance. Algorithmic trading has been referred to as “automated,” “black box” and “robo” trading. Trading via algorithms requires investors to first specify their investing and/or trading goals in terms of mathematical instructions. Dependent upon investors’ needs, customized instructions range from simple to highly sophisticated. After instructions are specified, computers implement those trades following the prescribed instructions.

Democratic Governance and Economic Performance: How Accountability Can Go Too Far in Politics, Law, and Business - Original PDF
Democratic Governance and Economic Performance: How Accountability Can Go Too Far in Politics, Law, and Business - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Dino Falaschetti خلاصه: Conventional wisdom warns that unaccountable political and business agents can enrich a few at the expense of many. But logically extending this wisdom implies that associated principals – voters, consumers, shareholders – will favor themselves over the greater good when ‘rules of the game’ instead create too much accountability. Democratic Governance and Economic Performance rigorously develops this hypothesis, and finds statistical evidence and case study illustrations that democratic institutions at various governance levels (e.g., federal, state, corporation) have facilitated opportunistic gains for electoral, consumer, and shareholder principals. To be sure, this conclusion does not dismiss the potential for democratic governance to productively reduce agency costs. Rather, it suggests that policy makers, lawyers, and managers can improve governance by weighing the agency benefits of increased accountability against the distributional costs of favoring principal stakeholders over more general economic opportunities. Carefully considering the fundamentals that give rise to this tradeoff should interest students and scholars working at the intersection of social science and the law, and can help professionals improve their own performance in policy, legal, and business settings. Falaschetti skillfully synthesizes key ideas from social choice theory, organizational economics, and interest group politics to challenge conventional wisdom about the benefits of democratic governance in organizations. This is an important book for reforming how financial institutions are regulated, and corporations are governed, in the wake of the great financial market collapse of 2008. (Margaret Blair, Vanderbilt Law) The scope of Democratic Governance and Economic Performance is truly commendable. While legal scholars, economists, and political scientists have raised parts of these issues before, by addressing the topic from both theoretical and empirical levels, this book provides useful perspective to anyone interested in the relationship between governance institutions and firm performance. (Jon Klick, Penn Law) This insightful book shares with Madison’s "Federalist #10" a concern for potentially disruptive effects from "majority factions." Falaschetti reminds us that some of our most costly policies result from democratic responsiveness, while some of our most successful policies come from organizations (e.g. courts, the Fed) that insulate us from democratic pressures. Systematic Trading: A unique new method for designing trading and investing systems - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Robert Carver خلاصه: This is not just another book with yet another trading system. This is a complete guide to developing your own systems to help you make and execute trading and investing decisions. It is intended for everyone who wishes to systematise their financial decision making, either completely or to some degree. Author Robert Carver draws on financial theory, his experience managing systematic hedge fund strategies and his own in-depth research to explain why systematic trading makes sense and demonstrates how it can be done safely and profitably. Every aspect, from creating trading rules to position sizing, is thoroughly explained. The framework described here can be used with all assets, including equities, bonds, forex and commodities. There is no magic formula that will guarantee success, but cutting out simple mistakes will improve your performance. You'll learn how to avoid common pitfalls such as over-complicating your strategy, being too optimistic about likely returns, taking excessive risks and trading too frequently. Important features include: - The theory behind systematic trading: why and when it works, and when it doesn't. - Simple and effective ways to design effective strategies. - A complete position management framework which can be adapted for your needs. - How fully systematic traders can create or adapt trading rules to forecast prices. - Making discretionary trading decisions within a systematic framework for position management. - Why traditional long only investors should use systems to ensure proper diversification, and avoid costly and unnecessary portfolio churn. - Adapting strategies depending on the cost of trading and how much capital is being used. - Practical examples from UK, US and international markets showing how the framework can be used.

Quantitative trading - algorithms, analytics, data, models, optimization - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Wong, Samuel Po Shing خلاصه: This chapter gives an overview and some historical background of quantita- tive trading, the title of this book. It begins with a historical review of the evolution of the trading infrastructure, from verbal communication and hand signaling in an exchange to electronic platforms, in Section 1.1. It then gives in Section 1.2 an introduction to quantitative trading strategies and in par- ticular, the time-scales associated with different classes of strategies. In this connection, we give in Section 1.3 a brief historical account of the paradigm shift from the “efficient market hypothesis” (EMH) to arbitrage opportuni- ties via quantitative trading. In Section 1.4, we describe “quant funds” that use these quantitative trading strategies, and also the closely related mutual funds and hedge funds. An overview of the algorithms, analytics, data, models, and optimization methods — the subtitle of this book — used in quantita- tive trading is given in Section 1.5. Section 1.6 discusses the interdisciplinary background of the book and the anticipated diversity of its target audience. It also provides suggestions on how the book can be used by different groups of readers. Supplements and problems are given in Section 1.7.

The European Emission Trading System and Its Followers: Comparative Analysis and Linking Perspectives - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Simone Borghesi, Massimiliano Montini, Alessandra Barreca (auth.) خلاصه: Given the rapid spread of ETSs in an increasing number of countries and the important role that they are likely to play for the success or failure of the environmental policy in the years to come, this book provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the EU ETS from both the legal and economic perspectives comparing it with the other main ETSs existing worldwide, in order to assess whether the EU ETS has truly represented a prototype for the other ETSs established around the world and to investigate the current perspectives for linking them in the future.Through the years, the EU ETS has progressively gained a paramount position within the EU environmental policy and climate change legislation and currently represents the most striking flagship in this sector, with more than 11.000 installations covered by the scheme. In parallel, the EU ETS has paved the way for the establishment of many other ETSs in several other jurisdictions. Such schemes are now recognized worldwide as the “cornerstones” of the climate change policy.
