This Is Why You're Fat: Where Dreams Become Heart Attacks - PDF
نویسندگان: Jessica Amason, Richard Blakeley خلاصه: Food was once the providence of celebrated chefs and critical connoisseurs. Cooking shows featured all gourmet creations and web sites displayed artfully photographed delights. Then something changed. Perhaps it was the desensitizing of web culture or perhaps it was a cry for help from the food-loving public. But by God - there came a day when fancy vegetable towers came crashing down and $50 mushrooms were no longer acceptable. Amason and Blakley wanted see the old stand-bys, the carnival foods of their childhoods, the sticky mess of a deep-fried candy bar, the indulgence of a greasy burger with all the fixins. It was the birth of the nasty food web-trend. And it was delicious. The website This is Why You?re Fat is an ode to this trend - whether seen as a commentary on North American dietary habits or a celebration of the deliciously bad - Amason and Blakey are devoted to the world?s newfound obsession with over-the-top food. Within its first month the site pulled in over ten million eye balls, and attracted major nation media including CNN. The world cooked, they listened. www.thisiswhyyourefat.com

At last!’ said a woman with a voice like ice.The man behind the torch snickered. ‘Who was it thatsaid the best place to hide something was in plain sight? What an idiot.’ His accent was odd, ominous.‘Just do it!’ hissed the woman.prologueGrasping the heavy torch tight in his gloved hand, the man brought it down like an axe. Glass shattered in acascade, exposing a milky-white orb – a giant pearl? – sittingon a bed of black velvet.Ignoring the sharp, glittering shards, the womanreached with a delicately thin hand – in a delicately thinwhite glove – and pulled out the orb.About the size of an ostrich egg, it was translucentand seemed almost to glow from within. The surface had ahoneycomb sort of texture comprised of many holes of varyingsizes. A thin band of silver circled the orb, dividing it into twoequal hemispheres. The woman pushed aside her white-blonde hair andheld the mysterious object to her perfectly shaped ear. As sheturned it over, it whispered like an open bottle in the wind.‘I can almost hear him,’ she gloated. ‘That horridmonster!’‘You’re so sure he’s alive? It’s been four, five hundredyears . . .’‘A creature like that – so impossible to make – is all themore impossible to kill,’ she replied, still listening to the ballin her hand.A small red bloodstain now marked her white glovewhere one of the glass shards had cut through; she didn’tseem to notice. ‘But now he can escape us no longer. Dream When You're Feeling Blue - PDF
Dream When You're Feeling Blue - PDF
نویسندگان: Elizabeth Berg خلاصه: T WAS KITTY’S TURN TO SLEEP with her head at the foot of the bed. She didn’t mind; she preferred it, actually. She liked the mild disorientation that came from that position, and she liked the relative sense of privacy—her sisters’ feet in her face, yes, but not their eyes, not their ears, nor the close, damp sounds of their breathing. And at the foot of the bed she was safe from Louise, who often yanked mercilessly at people’s hair in her sleep. Tonight Kitty was last to bed, having been last in the bathroom. Everybody liked it when Kitty was last in the bathroom because, of the eight people living in the house, she always took the longest. Apart from the normal ablutions, she did things in there: affected poses she thought made her look even more like Rita Hayworth—she did look like Rita Hayworth, everyone said so. She filed her fingernails, she experimented with combining perfumes to make a new scent, she creamed her face, she used eyebrow pencil to make beauty marks above her lip. She also read magazines in the bathroom because there, no one read over her shoulder. Oh, somebody would bang on the door every time she was in there, somebody was always banging on the bathroom door, but a girl could get a lot done in a room with a locked door. Kitty could do more in five minutes in the bathroom than in thirty minutes anywhere else in the house, where everyone in the family felt it their right—their obligation!—to butt into everyone else’s business. When Kitty came out of the bathroom, she tiptoed into the bedroom, where it appeared her sisters were already asleep—Tish on her side with her knees drawn up tight, Louise with the covers flung off. Kitty crouched down by Louise and whispered her sister’s name. Kitty wanted to talk; she wasn’t ready to sleep yet. But Louise didn’t budge.

نویسندگان: Richard W. Pound خلاصه: An IOC insider speaks out on creating a drug-free sports cultureWith doping charges leveled at athletes in baseball, cycling, and in the Olympics, cheating has, to many onlookers, become the norm in pro sports. With implications far beyond the sports arena, Inside Dope examines the genesis of doping in sports as well as in the world of doctors and trainers; drug testing and the battle to stay ahead of users; drug companies and big business; and the role of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as watchdog. Written by a former Olympian, an IOC official, and a passionate advocate of fair play in sports, this eye-opening book takes a candid look at testing standards and the future of doping and sports and the larger issue of how doping affects the public perception of athletes.

Body Image (Issues That Concern You) - PDF
نویسندگان: Heidi Williams خلاصه: Most people would like to change something about their bod-ies and the way that they look, but for some people it isan obsession. A freckle, a mole, the size of their nose, the sym-metry of their ears, the size of their breasts, whatever the flaw orflaws, major or minor, real or misperceived, noticeable or not, they are life consuming for people with body dysmorphic disor-der (BDD).Sufferers of BDD may refuse to have their picture taken, stopgoing out with friends, quit going to school, stop going to work, refuse to leave home altogether, and even attempt suicide. Theymay have multiple plastic surgeries or just spend literally hours aday looking at, trying to cover up, measuring, and thinking abouttheir perceived defect. No amount of reassurance will comfortthem.Body integrity identity disorder (BIID) is a unique type ofBDD. Sometimes called “amputee wannabees,” sufferers feelthat they will not be themselves until a certain limb or limbsare amputated. Driven to desperation, some have taken it uponthemselves to remove their own limbs or have damaged them byfreezing them so that they have to be amputated. Once the limbsare gone, they feel whole. While people with BIID are desperate to remove something, others feel compelled, or just want, to add something. Bodymodification can range from the tame to the extreme. Multipletattoos, multiple piercings, and piercings in every part of thebody imaginable are becoming more common and more cultur-ally acceptable. Some people go to greater extremes with thingslike tattoos covering their entire bodies, sewing beads into theirskin, branding (burning a permanent scar), eyeball tattooing, eyeball jewelry, tooth filing, tongue splitting, ear pointing orshaping, and 3-D body modification such as horn implanting
