The Solar Home: How to Design and Build a House You Heat With the Sun (How-To Guides) - PDF
نویسندگان: خلاصه: I am a first-time DIY owner-builder, presently in the early planning stages of my house project. I picked this book up at Borders as my first book on homebuilding, and was glad that I did. It was a quick and easy read, and its friendly, informal, confident style makes the first-time homebuilder feel that perhaps doing it yourself is not so daunting a task after all. The book contains enough detailed explanations and drawings to give one a feel for what kind of work is involved in all the various stages of a typical passive solar homebuilding project, while remaining brief enough as to not be too intimidating. However, I agree with the previous reviewer that this is only a snapshot of one particlular way of building an energy-efficient house, and many alternatives are not covered, for example, alternative insulating wall materials such as straw bales or SIPS board. Also, the book is biased towards construction in far-north climates and does not extensively address the needs of warmer regions where keeping the house cool may often be a bigger concern than keeping it warm. Also, the authors seem overly obsessed with putting up completely airtight vapor barriers on their interior wall surfaces; they themselves describe high interior humidity problems that they had as a result. And personally, I would not want to live inside an airtight plastic bubble! It is my understanding from talking to architect friends that you want water vapor to be able to get out of your house, while preventing moisture from coming in, via selective membrane type sheathing materials such as Tyvek. Other sources I've read (e.g. straw bale books) seem to agree that it is possible for a wall to allow water vapor to pass through relatively freely while still retaining a good insulation value. But, aside from those qualifications, I found this book to be a reasonably good, gentle introduction to what's involved in DIY passive solar homebuilding, at least for wood-frame homes of a certain typical style.

The author, Darren Neese, takes you from concept to finished product. This book is aimed at beginners, so it is perfect for me, perhaps it will fit your DotNetNuke Skinning needs as well. First, let me say this, I love DotNetNuke. Second, I hate skinning DotNetNuke. As a developer that is my weakest area. In fact, to quote Scott Hanselman: "The difference between a Designer and Developer, when it comes to design skills, is the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it." - Scott Hanselman with apologies to Larry Miller DotNetNuke Skinning Tutorial makes the design element of DotNetNuke a little easier. It does not automatically make your designs pretty, but it opens up the mystery of creating a design that is functional and usable. I must say thanks to PACKT Publishing for continuing to produce books that break down complicated task in a clear and concise way. If there were one thing that I would add in the next edition of the book, since they use the DotNetNuke Starter Kit install package, is to expose how to install the Starter Kit on Visual Studio 2008, when Visual Studio 2005 is not installed on the PC. I understand that when the book was written VS2008 was not released and by the next release of the book this may be fixed on the DotNetNuke side, but if it is not, there is a small amount of pain to install the package on VS2008.
Know Your Parenting Personality: How to Use the Enneagram to Become the Best Parent You Can Be - PDF
نویسندگان: خلاصه: This book is well written and extensive in describing the nine enneagram types as they might relate to parenting. Each one includes examples of situations and potential pitfalls as well as advantages. That said, I was disappointed about a couple of things, which limited the usefulness of the book in my mind. There is a quiz at the beginning, the answers of which are supposed to tell you which enneagram parenting type you are. While the examples are fairly good, anyone who knows about the enneagram diagram knows that determining your type is rather complex and most people don't fall cleanly into only one category, but have influences from other types, i.e. wings, and move toward other types when at their best, or digress in unhealthy circumstances. While the information presented here is good, I'm afraid a fair number of readers will see themselves in multiple types and may become confused about how to proceed. Ms. Levine uses different names for the types than I've seen used in other material and makes no attempt to relate them to one another. If you know nothing about the enneagram, obviously that won't bother you, but it bothered me. I was also hoping there would be something to help parents identify their children's types since parents are not operating in a vacuum. All in all, I felt the book has value in helping parents recognize how their personality type, whatever it is, may be affecting their children in ways they didn't expect and we all want to be better parents, so that is useful, but from the enneagram perspective, it's not as detailed as I was expecting.

However, each time she met with her coach, Maurice, she would either arrive late or leave early, and she frequently canceled her appointments altogether. Frustrated, Maurice devel- oped a six-page document that compared Louise’s coaching goals with infor- mation he had learned thus far about Louise’s behavior. The data came from several sources: Louise herself; interviews with Louise’s manager, peers, and subordinates; and Maurice’s own observations. While Maurice had devel- oped this document as a coaching tool for his own use, Louise desperately wanted to see it. After convincing Maurice to give her the document, Louise proceeded to defend her behavior and to argue over even the smallest details. That's okay—not every reader will understand every item in this book. Because the book can help you put some basic security in place, some parts are rather technical. If you have to skip sections or come back later, that's fine. My goal is to present the material in a technically accurate way while trying to make it understandable for nontechnical readers. That is a broad range to cover, and I'm sure some people will feel some areas are too technical or not technical enough. For readers who want more technical information, I've included links and resources that can cover nearly all topics in this book to a far greater depth. On the other hand, if you find something that is too technical for you, feel free to skip ahead a bit. As you become familiar with the topics and discussions, you can go back and read again later. Although users of non-Windows operating systems such as Linux, Macintosh, or BeOS will find the conceptual parts of this book useful, the main focus is on the Windows family of operating systems most often found in homes and small businesses. Additionally, users seeking advanced technical discussions of security or in-depth scripting and coding analysis of tools will not find them in this book. Those areas of discussion are outside the scope of this book. I will, however, provide links and references to those subjects as appropriate throughout the text of the book.
