Alternative Energy - Original PDF
Alternative Energy - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Peggy Daniels Becker خلاصه: E nergy continues to be one of the most hotly debated topics in America today. Public discussion often focuses on issues related to Americans’ use of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and gasoline. With topics like gasoline prices and global warming in the news almost every day, Americans are also talking about al- ternative sources of energy that could replace fossil fuels. These alternative energies include solar, wind, and water power, and fuel made from trees, plants, and waste products. History tells us that these sources of energy, now viewed as alternatives, were once the primary sources of energy used by people to heat their homes, cook their food, and do their work. A look at the chang- ing use of energy over time can help in understanding how Americans became dependent on fossil fuels and how earth’s original sources of energy came to be seen as alternatives. Using Energy All of earth’s life forms use energy to survive. In nature, plants and trees get energy from sunlight through the photosynthesis process. Energy from the sun and wind drive earth’s water cycle, a critical support system for life. Wind energy helps the pollina- tion process of some plants and trees and moves water on the surface of lakes and oceans to create waves. The energy of water moving in rivers and waterfalls is powerful enough to carve mountains into valleys and canyons and to carry rocks and soil to new locations. Earth itself is full of energy from its under- ground center of hot molten rock, which creates heat known as geothermal energy. All of these different types of energy work together to support life on earth.

God Bless You, Joe Stalin: The Man Who Saved Capitalism - PDF
God Bless You, Joe Stalin: The Man Who Saved Capitalism - PDF
نویسندگان: Lewis Kaplan خلاصه: This controversial book traces 20th century history and argues that (1) US prosperity is inexorably linked to the U.S. deficit and has been since the New Deal; (2) Any effort to significantly reduce the national debt will result in a depression that will make that of the 1930s seem like good times; (3) that it was the Cold War and the Great Society which made the American and global economy as prosperous as they are today. Stalin has been accused of many things; add to the list his role as the father of modern-day economics and a major factor in inspiring the US to take a bold course in the 20th century. This dramatic narrative traces the evolution of the concept of the Almighty Dollar against the backdrop of the development and denouement of the Cold War, demonstrating how individual decisions made by US and Soviet leaders affected the course of events. This enlightening and controversial book sets forth the thesis that the growing prosperity of the US during the past 60 years is directly linked to deficit spending, and that the synergy of these two phenomena will continue for the foreseeable future. An analysis of the Historical Tables of the United States Government, showing the tandem growth of US deficits and the GDP, is interwoven into the historical recounting. Furthermore, The Almighty Dollar is not in danger of collapse because if the nations of the world don't sustain the integrity of the U.S. dollar as the currency of exchange, their own economies will collapse. Chapter 1. Evolution of the Almighty Dollar; Chapter 2. The Amazing American Economy; Chapter 3. Beyond Good and Evil: A Different Portrait of Joe Stalin; Chapter 4. The Contradictions of State Socialism; Chapter 5. The Cold War Begins: The Truman Presidency; Chapter 6. The Cold War in Neutral: The Eisenhower Presidency; Chapter 7. For Your Body Only: Discover the Diet You Were Born to Eat - PDF
For Your Body Only: Discover the Diet You Were Born to Eat - PDF
نویسندگان: Gregory H. Tefft خلاصه: I agree with Dr. Tefft on many of the ideas and concepts presented in his book, however, as another reviewer pointed out, the book is poorly written, has terrible editing and lacks cohesion. Dr. Tefft begins by taking a very scientific approach to personalized nutrition, but then takes a u-turn into what seems to be an infomercial for the latest multi-level marketing scheme. (Check out the website listed in the book and that will further illustrate this point http://www.dragondoor.com ) He lays out a great foundation and argument for why all of the scientific and laboratory typing is necessary for optimum nutrition and health, then abruptly dumps all of that for the "better" and "simpler" testing developed by Personal Nutrition and further improved upon by his own organization, The American Society for the Advancement of Personalization (ASAP). This would be fine, except for the fact that it doesn't provide greater personalization, which is supposed to be the point.
Clean, Green, and Lean: Get Rid of the Toxins That Make You Fat - PDF
Clean, Green, and Lean: Get Rid of the Toxins That Make You Fat - PDF
نویسندگان: Walter Crinnion خلاصه: I expected to be disappointed by this book, but instead found it quite interesting. The basic hypothesis is that we are surrounded in our environments and in our diets by toxins; these toxins are horrible for our bodies and contribute to a vast range of symptoms; when losing weight, these toxins are released from our fat where they are stored and flood our body leading to worse symptoms. While the marketing point of the book might be on how to lose weight, it really is more holistic and is about adding detoxifiers to ones diet. It discusses foods that are bad (such as which fish have the most mercury) to foods that are good (such as blueberries and blackberries are great detoxifiers) Having expected some new age fru-fru, I was pleasantly surprised to learn a lot from the book, and it has impacted some of my eating practices, in particular with respect to a "green drink" shake a friend turned me on to,since the book puts in the basis of why various components of the drink (basically kale, chard, flax seeds, various fruits) are useful for health and cleansing. although i doubt i will take the book to some of the extremes, such as removing the carpeting from my house and getting a weekly colonic, there is much material that is worth thinking about. the weakest part for me were the recipes. there are many wonderful vegetarian, raw food and spa cookbooks out there. the recipes here, although called wonderful by the author, really are drab at best. use the book as a different perspective on what various foods can do holistically, but don't look to it as a cook book or for a step by step guide to losing weight.
You Have to Admit It's Getting Better: From Economic Prosperity to Environmental Quality - PDF
You Have to Admit It's Getting Better: From Economic Prosperity to Environmental Quality - PDF
نویسندگان: Terry L. Anderson خلاصه: To the doomsayers who maintain that natural resources are being depleted and the environment is getting worse, Terry Anderson and his fellow contributors offer a bold retort: it's getting better all the time. They present a powerful argument that, through such established institutions as property rights, the rules of law, and limited government, economic growth and environmental quality will both flourish. You Have to Admit It's Getting Better shows how, by focusing our energies on developing and protecting the institutions of freedom, rather than on regulating human use of natural resources through political processes, we can in fact have our environmental cake and eat it, too. The book offers a number of often-surprising revelations that debunk many commonly held beliefs about the future of our environment. It shows, for example, how liberalization of international trade is more likely to improve environmental quality than reduce it. It also explains how the prosperity and improved human well-being that we enjoy today are not leaving future generations worse off, but leaving them with more capital and larger stocks of natural resources. Throughout the book, the authors repeatedly show that economic growth is not the antithesis of environmental quality: rather, the two go hand in hand if the incentives are right.
