I paced like this when figuring or planning, and rolled my knuckles,and snapped my fingers softly and without rhythm, and walked from the western edge ofthe apartment, where I would lock and unlock the front door, and then east, to the backdeck's glass sliding door, which I opened quickly, thrust my head through and shut again.Hand could hear the quiet roar of the door moving back and forth on its rail, but saidnothing. The air was arctic and it was Friday afternoon and I was home, in the new blueflannel pajama pants I wore most days then, indoors or out. A stupid and nervous bird thecolor of feces fluttered to the feeder over the deck and ate the ugly mixed seeds I'd put inthere for no reason and lately regretted -- these birds would die in days and I didn't wantto watch their flight or demise. This building warmed itself without regularity orequitable distribution to its corners, and my apartment, on the rear left upper edge, got itsheat rarely and in bursts. Jack was twenty-six and died five months before and now Handand I would leave for a while. I had my ass beaten two weeks ago by three shadows in astorage unit in Oconomowoc -- it had nothing to do with Jack or anything else, really, ormaybe it did, maybe it was distantly Jack's fault and immediately Hand's -- and we had toleave for a while. I had scabs on my face and back and a rough pear-shaped bump on thecrown of my head and I had this money that had to be disseminated and so Hand and Iwould leave. My head was a condemned church with a ceiling of bats but I swung fromthis dark mood to euphoria when I thought about leaving.

TheCalifornia version was only 1 of 26 laws with that label passed in athree-year period during the 1990s, and the Three Strikes approachwas only 1 of many punitive reforms of the 1990s.What sets California’s law apart from the other Three Strikes lawsand every other penal law innovation of recent times is the extremityof its terms and the revolutionary nature of its ambitions. This statutewas drafted by outsiders to have the maximum possible impact oncriminal punishments. Whereas most penal laws are designed todeliver less drastic changes than they advertise—to bark louder thanthey bite—the California statute was designed to operate even morebroadly than its specialized title would suggest. It was a law de-signed to bite louder than it barked.The origin and impact of this legislation would have been an im-portant subject no matter which state had adopted it, but the settingfor the new law provided an even more compelling case for a majorstudy. The state of California is one of the largest criminal justice sys-tems in the free world. Its prisons and jails held almost a quarter of amillion inmates before the new law took effect. The California prisonsystem had grown more than fivefold in the 14 years prior to ThreeStrikes and already was larger than any prison system in the Westernworld. At other moments it has been simply ‘pleasing’, astalwart demonstration of conventional social mores; this aspect promptedGeorge Bernard Shaw to accuse Shakespeare of ‘exploit[ing] the fondnessof the British Public for sham moralizing and stage “philosophy”.’2 Theplay’s ability to encompass these extremes tells an interesting story aboutchanging cultural and theatrical practices. Tracing the history of As YouLike It in the theatre and on film shows the extent to which a playscript is anevolving document that can be radically shaped in performance. Directors,actors, and venues are obviously central to this shaping process, and thecurrent incarnation of As You Like It bears the imprint of various theatricalfigures and general alterations in styles and playing places. Perhaps even moresignificant in following how the play has been evoked is a consideration ofthe wide and shifting context of social codes, gender norms, and attitudestowards the arts, especially theatre. The production history of As You LikeIt affords us a focused view of major social, political, and aesthetic changesover the past four centuries.At the same time, the performance history of As You Like It testifies to theparticular artistic poise of this comedy, written in 1600 when Shakespearewas at the height of his powers. A mode of refreshment and regeneration,Shakespearean comedy does not merely entertain by providing diversion,but seeks to accommodate viewers to the world in which they live. Towardsthis end, As You Like It addresses and seeks to manage a number of tensionsof social life, and achieves success through its ‘power to express conflictand order it in art’.3 Its formal balance does not eradicate the importanceof the play’s historical context, however. Because As You Like It seeks toorder specifically social ills, it draws on and develops changing conceptionsof how people relate to one another, individually and in groups. نویسندگان: خلاصه: In November 1944, during a lull in the intense fighting so characteristic of the Pacific War, a Japanese sol-dier made the following entry in his diary: ‘’I won’t go so far as to say it is absolutely impossible but I don’tthink we can win the war with Japanese spirit alone.” 1 Although the average GI would have found these wordsof little interest or importance, they were immensely heartening to Allied propagandists charged with the taskof inducing demoralization among enemy combatants. For this seemingly insignificant diary entry and manyothers akin to it provided evidence that soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA ) were losing confidencein their ability to win the “Greater East Asia War” and recognizing the vital importance played by materialfactors in wartime. Similar statements proffered by Japanese prisoners of war (POWS ) and found in documentsretrieved from battlefields throughout the Pacific were important sources of intelligence for psychologicalwarfare personnel, whose job it was to hasten Japan’s defeat by waging a propaganda campaign to diminishJapanese confidence in their ability to achieve victory.Historians have written hundreds of volumes about World War II. Many of them analyze various aspects ofthe Pacific War, and some examine the subject of psychological warfare (psywar), but rarely do these twolines of scholarly inquiry intersect. The bulk of the studies of psychological operations in World War II per-tain to the European Theater of Operations (ETO). John W. Dower’s War without Mercy: Race and Power inthe Pacific War assesses the impact of racial hatred, cultural stereotypes, and psychological factors on theconduct of the Pacific War. Yet his treatment of wartime atrocities, Japanese adherence to “death before disho-nor,” and Americans “obsessed with the task of slaughter” reveals only part of the story. 2 Although he refersto the surrender of demoralized Japanese soldiers, the subject is peripheral to his work. This is understanda-ble given his focus, yet one is left with a very clear impression that such occurrences were extraordinarily rareand insignificant events. More problematic is Dower’s assertion that Americans in decision-making positionswere so singularly unimpressed with the idea of waging a serious propaganda campaign against the Japanesethat “such ideas had little impact.”3 In fact, this is not the case. Psywar was not an afterthought on the part ofAllied military commanders, nor was it always perceived as some ‘’impractical plaything of effete civilians.”4In their attempts to demoralize Japanese troops Allied propagandists in the Southwest Pacific alone dissemi-nated nearly 400 million propaganda leaflets and witnessed the capture of approximately 19,500 Japanese pri-soners.
