نویسندگان: خلاصه: Arguably, the most important question in Economics and probably in social sci- ence is ‘why are some nations rich, and others poor?’ Not only is this an interesting theoretical question, it has practical relevance to human living. According to the World Bank, 9.4% of the global population are still living below the poverty line of US$1.90-a-day (The World Bank, 2020). Understanding the factors that con- tribute to a nation’s economic development will help clarify the path forward for development policymaking. This Companion will explore the phenomenon of economic development and review the leading theories explaining why it is present in some nations and absent in others. Such a task will necessarily require one to be selective, as development studies is a complex field involving various disciplines with no easy answers. Even today, development economists debate the causes of development and how to foster it in poor nations, if at all possible. Before diving into development theories, however, this chapter will first define some basic concepts and establish general facts. The subsequent sections will pin down the concept of ‘economic development’ and provide factual information about changes in living standards over time. We show that a real and sustained improvement in living standards has indeed occurred—called the ‘Great Enrich- ment’ which started in the late eighteenth century onwards. Accordingly, we explore the deep determinants of this development and focus on the rules and values in society which have facilitated this improvement in living standard

The twin challenges of low fertility rate and longer life expectancy have resulted in a shrinking workforce, an increase in old-age dependency ratio and feminization of ageing in the country. This chapter examines the government’s response to popula- tion ageing in Singapore since 1982. The Singapore government adopts the “many helping hands” approach to enable individuals, families and community partners to play their part in supporting and caring for older adults. It also promulgates important legislations to protect the rights of older adults. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to healthy ageing. How an individual, the community and the government understand and inter- pret the concept of healthy ageing may vary among cities or countries. Besides, how the government in a city or a country develops its healthy ageing framework or implements its healthy ageing strategy very much depends on the political, economic, social, cultural and historical context. Yet the causes, effects and solutions warrant meticulous scrutiny. The concerns have heightened in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, as there is a direct linkage between nature’s destruction and the outbreak of disease. It is imperative to protect nature by halting natural resource degradation to prevent future pandemics. In this backdrop, the book focuses on natural resource governance mechanisms illustrated with cases of biodiversity, water resources and climate change to identify the underlying causes of resource degradation, especially in the context of developing countries. It also attempts to bring forth a new understanding regarding the usage, management and conservation of natural resources in a sustainable manner. The broad concerns that arise in the contemporary era are to (a) conserve nature in all its forms and functions and (b) create an equitable home and achieve a high standard of living for people on this planet without destabilising critical planetary processes (O’Neill et al., 2018; WWF, 2016). These dual challenges are also delin- eated in the United Nations’ 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The Sustain- able Development Goals (SDGs)—17 in total—under the agenda include several goals (Goals 6, 13, 14 and 15) which focus on nature and the environment directly (Elder & Olsen, 2019; Scharlemann et al., 2020), while other goals have indirect environmental implications as well.

First, we discuss how historical path-dependence and the presence of mega- trends “shape” the future (Chapter 1). We use a multidirectional approach through pastcasting and backcasting to highlight how the past, the present, and the future are connected through history and the dynamic presence of economic, social, and political megatrends. Second, we explore the “art” of forecasting, which is a combination of analytical skills, creativity, and a multidisciplinary outlook (Chapter 2). Essentially, we provide a step-by-step guide for scenario building analysis and generate the four possible scenarios for Greece in the next decade. Third, we high- light the importance of a series of contextual or “swinging” factors for the future (Chapter 3). Such factors concern the social and political settings, cultural values, and the effects of irreducible uncertainty. The analysis of the swinging factors is crucial because it facilitates speculation regarding which scenario is more likely to prevail.1
