نویسندگان: Michael A. Roberto خلاصه: “Dr. Roberto has skillfully managed to blend in-depth research with his straightforward and enjoyable style and, in doing so, painted a masterpiece that should be considered by any institution or individual looking to detect or solve problems. Presenting cases and their lessons from multiple venues, he offers wisdom readily applicable to any arena.” —Duane Deal, Brigadier General, United States Air Force (Retired) “Solving problems is one thing; finding them early enough to do something about it is quite another. In this entertaining book full of insight and examples, Michael Roberto provides managers with hands-on recommendations on how to avoid falling into decision-making traps by getting a step ahead.” —Sydney Finkelstein, Steven Roth Professor of Management, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and author of Why Smart Executives Fail and Think Again “In typical style, Mike Roberto gets right to the heart of major challenges facing businesses in today’s rapidly changing landscape. He provides not only a burning platform for thinking differently, but also practical tools for busy leaders to implement following an ‘action learning’ approach.” —Jon Shepherd, Chief Learning Officer, Mars Inc. In Know What You Don’t Know, best-selling author Michael Roberto shows leaders how to go beyond mere “problem solving” to uncover and address emerging problems while they’re still manageable–before they mushroom into disaster! Roberto first identifies the diverse, sometimes surprising reasons why problems typically fester in the shadows, ignored and unaddressed. Next, he systematically introduces seven powerful solutions. You’ll discover how to become a business “anthropologist,” observing how your employees, customers, and suppliers actually behave, not just how they’re “supposed” to behave. Roberto shows how and when to circumvent your gatekeepers to see crucial raw data...how to “connect the dots” among issues that seem unrelated, but are really signs of a deeper pattern...how to promote candor among front-line employees...encourage “useful” mistakes, and more. Along the way, Roberto offers powerful insights for overcoming the “isolation trap” so many senior executives face: the trap that can keep you assuming everything is fine, while your company’s problems are spiraling out of control! • Watch your company’s “game film”–and your competitors’ Systematically understand how your company is really behaving and performing–and how you really match up • Recognize the value of “small failures” Use small problems as a window on your system–and a signal of possible weaknesses elsewhere • Get beyond the numbers, to the reality Discover why too much formal analysis can actually hide your problems–and start leveraging the value of intuition • Become a true business “ethnographer” Observe your people in their natural setting–and recognize what they’re not telling you

Negotiation: The Art of Getting What You Want - PDF
Negotiation: The Art of Getting What You Want - PDF
نویسندگان: Michael Schatzki, Wayne Coffey خلاصه: ou don't have to act like the people in the foregoing examples. You don't have to take no for an answer. You don't have to accept what is offered or back off from what you deserve. You will learn that you have recourse, that there are ways to change “No” to “Yes,” that you don't have to settle for table scraps when what you deserve is a square meal. How? By learning to become a better negotiator. In more than 20 years of conducting negotiation seminars, giving speeches and coaching hundreds of people on the life skill of negotiation, I've come to one inescapable conclusion: Most people don't get what they deserve in their day-to-day lives. I'm not talking about year-long vacations in the Caribbean or thirty-room ocean side estates – not that those wouldn't be nice. I'm talking about what's coming to you in the context of your everyday life. This book is an outgrowth of discussions I've had with people from all walks of life. I'll be amazed if you don't see yourself in almost every page of the book – feelings you've had, situations you've been in, that are nearly identical to those of the people whose real-life experiences pack these pages. I've talked to machinists and mothers, assistants and managers, senior citizens and teenagers, factory workers and therapists, writers and all manner of othr business people. I've been on call-in radio programs and seen the switchboard light up like a Christmas tree with people seeking advice on their particular problems. Everywhere I go, the message always seems to come down to this: “I need help in negotiating. I have a hard time standing up for my own cause. Too often, I'm shamed or manipulated into acting a certain way or doing something I don't want to do. Too often, I'm thrust into the position of having to struggle to get even the short end of the stick.” Well, help is here! It's no secret why so many of us are uncomfortable negotiating for ourselves. Practically from the cradles---at home, school, church, and office – we've been conditioned to be obedient, to accept things as they are; in short, not to rock the boat. We have been brought up in a world of seemingly “fixed” prices, “inflexible” rules, and “immutable” decisions. We go into a store looking for a refund on a defective microwave oven we bought 35 days ago. “Sorry,” the salesclerk tells us, “but our policy is no refunds or exchanges after 30 days.” So we gulp, pick up our broken microwave, and head for home, right? Wrong! We negotiate . . . with the clerk, the clerk's boss, the boss's boss, or whoever has the clout to help us. And by the time we get to the end of this book, we're going to stand one heck of a chance of walking out of that store with either a new microwave or a refund.

Y-Size Your Business: How Gen Y Employees Can Save You Money and Grow Your Business - Original PDF
Y-Size Your Business: How Gen Y Employees Can Save You Money and Grow Your Business - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jason Ryan Dorsey خلاصه: I recently read Y-Size Your Business - How Gen Y Employees Can Save You Money and Grow Your Business by Jason Ryan Dorsey. The Y generation comes after generation X and is often referred to as those being born between 1977 and 1992. That would put them between the ages of 17 and 32. They are also referred to as The Millennial Generation, being shaped heavily by the rapid growth of the Internet, cell phones, Twitter, blogs (I did not know I was shaping a generation)etc. The book has a number of practical ideas and suggestions on how to recruit, train and get the most out of Gen Y. One of the best chapters I liked was Day 1 is all important. The title says it all - basically make the first day a good one. Common sense (which often is not that common). We're now in a culture where we can expect to have four generations working in many businesses, often with different or unique values. I think it's critical for any manager or leader to understand some of these generational biases in order to run their company well. I loved the book, even though I don't like to categorize people and don't consider myself to be within a certain class of people (like boomers). Very early in the book, Jason handles this by saying "A generation is not a rigid box that every single person of a certain age will fit nearly inside. Rather I see generational identity as simply a clue -a big clue-about where to start to more effectively connect with, engage, and lead people of different ages. A clue-not a box." He talks about the Y-Generation having a feeling of entitlement, but places a lot of blame where it should be, on the parents. He says "I know how off-putting Gen Y's attitude can be, but before we condemn my generation as a bunch of spoiled brats (something that I find personally offensive and plan to tell my mom about) we should consider for a moment that entitlement is 100 percent a learned behavior. You are not born entitled. You have to be raised that way.." He talks about how Gen Y looks for fun and excitement in a job and tells the story of Coldstone Creamery, a 1400+ store ice cream franchise (with locations in 12 countries) who have repositioned their job interview as an audition. One thing I love about the Y generation is they're ease of use with technology and how they do Internet research and the use of techno gadgets comes so easily and naturally. The book did have a section that pointed out that the boomer generation was the generation of workaholics (this is one I'm in).
