China’s 40 Years of Reform - Original PDF
China’s 40 Years of Reform - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Wei Liu خلاصه: The year 2018 was nothing but exceptional because domestically, it coincided with the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening-up, which started in 1978, and the 120th anniversary of the Hundred Days of Reform of 1898, and globally, it coincided with the 170th anniversary of the publication of the Communist Manifesto in 1848 and the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth in 1818. To look back at the past 40 years of reform and opening-up and look forward to the future when China’s Two Centenary Goals will be achieved, the country should see the reform and opening-up from the perspective of history and global affairs, which corresponds with President Xi Jinping’s speech commemorating the anniversary of Marx’s birth on May 4, 2018: “It is only by considering the long course of human history that we can gain a perspective on the essence of historical movements and the direction of contemporary developments.” Xi Jinping stated that through reform and opening-up, “Chinese Communists have been merging the tenets of Marxism with the practical realities of the reform and opening-up. Chinese Communists brought the people together in developing the great new endeavor of socialism with Chinese characteristics, enabling China to take big strides to catch up with the times. Thus, they brought about the tremendous transfor- mation of China: from having gained independence to becoming wealthy.” Indeed, the only viable way to understand the relevance of China’s reform and opening-up is to understand what the phrases “the practical realities” in China and “to take big strides to catch up with the times” mean. China’s 40 years of reform and opening-up is a process from gaining independence to becoming prosperous. In history, however, prior to gaining independence, China “woke up”; after “becoming prosperous”, China will become powerful. We may say that the process of China’s reform is a process from waking up, gaining independence, to becoming prosperous and becoming powerful. The significance of such a process is obvious only when seen from a global perspective

The Meaning of Life - Epub + Converted PDF
نویسندگان: Russell Hasan خلاصه: The Meaning of Life: My Answer to Jordan B. Peterson According to Objectivism, what is the meaning of life? The meaning of life is: You. You are the meaning of your life. The meaning of your life is you. There is nothing else. Your life, and you living it, and the joy, and sadness, and whatever it means to you, that is the meaning of your life, that is the meaning of life for you. Jesus Christ is not the meaning of your life. Helping the poor, and Karl Marx, is not the meaning of your life. No. You, and only you, are the meaning of your own life. But that means that you have to work, and work hard, to create a meaningful life, to create meaning and intention and purpose and achievement for your life, to make your life meaningful. You have to do it, but it is something only you can do. Now, you could choose to have Jesus Christ be the meaning of your life, and many people have done that, but then that is about you, it isn't really about Jesus Christ. It's about what Jesus Christ means to you; it is not about Jesus Christ himself. And, likewise, you could choose for the meaning of your life to be helping others, but then it isn't really about helping others, it's really about you and the meaning that you create for yourself by choosing that as your purpose in life, as the focus of your life. People think that "What is the meaning of life?" is an impossible question to answer, but if you change it into "What is the meaning of my life?" then it becomes possible for you to answer it. But if you fail, if you do not create meaning and find meaningful people, events, emotions, goals, etc., in your life, then you fall into the void, the abyss, nihilism, then your life would have no meaning

THIS RADICAL LAND - PDF
نویسندگان: DAEGAN MILLER خلاصه: Then the coal company came with the world’s largest shovel, And they tortured the timber, and stripped all the land. Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken, And they wrote it all down as the progress of man. John Prine, “Paradise”1 What happens when the past’s oldest witness comes crashing down dead? A new day will dawn . . . but over what? Where are we, who are we, when the bough breaks? Bostonians opened their eyes on a Wednesday morning in 1876 to opaque February skies bleakly blanketing a city made suddenly strange. At 7 p.m. the evening before, the enormous Great Elm on the famous Boston Common had been toppled by a hard wind.2 Of course, trees fall all the time with never a thought spared them, but the Great Elm was dif- ferent. It was famous in the nineteenth-century as an emissary from the past, and it appears ubiquitously in prose, poem, and print, a people’s treasured heirloom, believed to be among the last living witnesses to the young nation’s milestones; its loss was disorienting. Paul Revere, on his 1775 midnight ride, was rumored to have passed by the tree

Silent Conflict A Hidden History of Early Soviet-Western Relations - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Michael Jabara Carley خلاصه: It is not easy to study the history of Soviet foreign policy or Soviet relations with the West. Until the beginning of the 1990s the Soviet archives were closed tight. After the collapse and dismemberment of the Soviet Union in 1991, the archives gradually opened, but only partially. Sometimes papers were opened only to be closed again. Russian archivists had tens of thou- sands of papki, or files, in their care and, not always knowing what was in them, were reluctant to open them to researchers. These include, inter alia, the important party archives for the inter-war years at Rossiiskii gosudarstven- nyi arkhiv sotsial’no-politicheskoi istorii (RGASPI) and the diplomatic papers of the Arkhiv vneshnei politiki Rossiiskoi Federatsii (AVPRF), the archives of the Russian foreign ministry. In AVPRF there were and are all sorts of dif- ficulties. Researchers have no access to inventories, so it’s like playing poker when asking archivists for files. Sometimes the files are rich, and you win, and sometimes not, and you lose. Computers were forbidden for a number of years, and photocopies were so costly as to make a new arrival gasp for air. You got used to the impediments and learned to function around them. The excitement of new discoveries and uncharted ground made you forget the numerous irritations
History of Economic Ideas From Adam Smith to Paul Krugman - Original PDF
History of Economic Ideas From Adam Smith to Paul Krugman - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Panayotis G. Michaelides خلاصه: xv Introduction Economic Science is the Social Science that studies the activities of people associ- ated with the creation of goods and services, with the real-world economic and financial transactions, both at the individual and collective levels. Economic Science is based on one or more theories, which are shaped, co-constructed or replaced with each other with the aid of quantitative analysis (mathematics, statistics, economet- rics, experiments, etc.). Economic Theory, in turn, is an abstract description of the functioning of the extremely complex real world, where new scientific knowledge does not emerge from ‘nowhere’ but arises out of existing knowledge, in a dialectical relationship with the ‘existing’ and very often to its negation. Therefore, science develops and evolves as a ‘living organism’, and often one scientific theory is followed by another in continuity, extension or even opposition to the previous one. Therefore, in order to have a body of knowledge for understanding Economics, we must delve into the various individual ‘truths’ of each theory and, therefore, we must look back to the work of earlier thinkers, within a science that is constantly evolving. This journey of the formation of Economic Theory cannot be seen independently of its social context, since it is within this context that Economic Science has devel- oped, in response to the social conditions that prevailed and their evolution. Therefore, an Economic Theory without knowledge of the deeper internal as well as external causal relationships that have shaped the existing theories would lead to a sterile view.

Max Weber and Karl Marx - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Karl Lowith خلاصه: Lowith's 1932 essay on Marx and Weber remains the definitive statement of the deep commonalities between these two thinkers. That is, it argues that Weber's central concern is to develop a fundamental theory of capitalism, as with Marx. For decades, it was "necessary" to attempt to parry Marx with Weber. Lowith's stood as an accusation of "bad faith" with regard to all such attempts, especially those who would evacuate Weber of all critique, even if only existential. Derek Sayer's "Capitalism and Modernity" is perhaps most in the spirit of this minor masterpiece.
