نویسندگان: Lynn Davis خلاصه: Are you looking forward to giving evidence? What do you have concerns about? Do you know how to prepare written evidence that will be taken seriously in court? "See You in Court" is an accessible guide for social workers on being a witness in care proceedings. With little training and few resources available, social workers can find preparing for court a daunting part of their role. "See You in Court" answers questions frequently asked by social workers in real cases, and gives information on court structures, basic rules of evidence, the roles of those involved in the proceedings, and court etiquette. The process of giving evidence is discussed, including how to deal with cross-examination. Case studies support the material, as well as multiple-choice questions and a checklist for witnesses. This practical book is essential reading for social workers, particularly those working with children and families.

نویسندگان: David S. Cohen خلاصه: Every green-lighted screenplay travels a long and harrowing road from idea to script to celluloid. In this fascinating survey of contemporary film craft, David Cohen of Script and Variety magazines interviews screenwriters from across the board—Oscar winners and novices alike—to explore what sets blockbuster successes apart from downright disasters. Tracing the fortunes of twenty-five films, including Troy, Erin Brockovich, Lost in Translation, and The Aviator, Cohen offers valuable insider access to the back lots and boardrooms, to the studio heads and directors, and to the overcaffeinated screenwriters themselves. Full of critical clues on how to sell a script—and avoid seeing it destroyed before the director calls "Action!"—Screen Plays is a book that both the aspiring screenwriter and curious cinephile will find irresistible.

نویسندگان: Julia Quinn خلاصه: ―Annabel!‖Annabel snapped to attention. Louisa was addressing her with uncommon urgency, and she‘d dowell to listen.―Annabel, this is important,‖ Louisa said.Annabel nodded, and an unfamiliar feeling washed over her—maybe of gratitude, certainly oflove. She‘d only just got to know her cousin, but already there was a deep bond of affection, andshe knew that Louisa would do everything in her power to keep Annabel from making anunhappy alliance.Unfortunately, Louisa‘s power was, in this capacity, limited. And she did not—no, she couldnot—understand the pressures of being the eldest daughter of an impoverished family.―Listen to me,‖ Louisa implored. ―Lord Newbury‘s son died, oh, I think it must be a bit over ayear ago. And he started looking for a wife before his son was cold in his grave.‖―Shouldn‘t he have found one by now, then?‖Louisa shook her head. ―He almost married Mariel Willingham.‖―Who?‖ Annabel blinked, trying to place the name.―Exactly. You‘ve never heard of her. She died.‖Annabel felt her eyebrows rise. It was really a rather emotionless delivery of such tragic news.―Two days before the wedding she took a chill.‖―She died in only two days?‖ Annabel asked. It was a morbid question, but, well, she had toknow.―No. Lord Newbury insisted upon delaying the ceremony. He said it was for her welfare, thatshe was too ill to stand up in church, but everyone knew that he really just wanted to make sureshe was healthy enough to bear him a son.‖―And then?‖―Well, and then she did die. She lingered for about a fortnight. It was really very sad. She wasalways very kind to me.‖ Louisa gave her head a little shake, then continued. ―It was a near missfor Lord Newbury. If he‘d married her, he would have had to go into mourning. As it was, hehad already tried to wed scandalously soon after his son‘s death. If Miss Willingham hadn‘t diedbefore the wedding, he‘d have had another year of black.‖―How long did he wait before looking for someone else?‖ Annabel asked, dreading the answer.―Not more than two weeks. Honestly, I don‘t think he would have waited that long if he thoughthe could have got away with it.‖ Louisa looked about, her eyes falling on Annabel‘s sherry. ―Ineed some tea,‖ she said.

How I loved getting out of sports. Mother wouldn’t give me a“Sports Excuse” very often, so I had to run in field hockey, lacrosse, basket-ball. In winter, we had the dreaded running races in the gym. But I did like towalk. My Mom and I went into New York City from Larchmont on weekendsand traipsed up and down Madison or Fifth Avenues at a breakneck pace. Ididn’t have neuropathy. Yet.Feet to Brain: Are You There? When we moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, in 1991, I enjoyed walking toLakeside, a community near mine; however, in 1996, people passed me byand soon were far ahead. My 30-minute walk took 40 minutes. Friendswanted me to go faster, but my feet didn’t like the idea. My legs were losingstrength, a common problem with neuropathy. My feet were tingling, burn-ing, and numb—especially at night. I felt stabbing, shooting pains. Ding.Ding. Ding. Bells and whistles should have sounded an alarm, but they did-n’t. In the 1990s, few people knew about peripheral neuropathy, myselfincluded. A huge number still haven’t a clue about it, even though 20 millionpeople in the United States have peripheral neuropathy. And the numbersare growing. In 1996, I went to an internist because the symptoms made me crabby. Shesaid, “You may have peripheral neuropathy. See a neurologist.” Her quick diag-nosis was unusual. Not so long ago, some patients weren’t diagnosed for along time. Thirty-four years is the longest I’ve heard of.

نویسندگان: Sarah Key خلاصه: The other day I was driving at dawn along one of Sydney’s forest-fringed outer highways. It was one of those leafy dappled mornings ofhigh summer with the occasional shaft of sunlight bursting throughthe greenery and making explosions of light wherever it landed. In themiddle, cleaving its way through the foliage, ran my highway; a duskyblue thread of bitumen blending and becoming as one with thewaking forest. As I rounded a corner I came upon a cyclist meander-ing at ease across the nearside lane of the roadway. I hung back tolook because his actions had a compelling quality of beauty to them;a languid mark of excellence that made me want to stay and watchrather than speed on past. I kept my distance, watching transfixed ashe acted out in front of me a perfect virtuoso performance of coordi-nated movement.

نویسندگان: Joyce Carol Oates خلاصه: They’d been drinking since about 10:00 p.m. We saw this guy walk-ing by himself by the railroad track, cutting through a field and onto Route11, it looked kind of weird, suspicious. We didn’t know who it was . . . Well, maybe they could see the boy was dark-skinned. Maybe one of themyelled out Nigger! Those skid marks in the gravel . . . Maybe Leo, whowas driving, aimed the car at the kid just to scare him, to make himrun. After that, things got confused. It had been approximately 12:15 a.m. on April 9, 1973, whenJadro Filer left his girlfriend’s house to walk back to his home, a ten-minute walk under ordinary circumstances, across the railroad em-bankment, along the highway shoulder past darkened gas stations, aTaco Bell, a McDonald’s. It was 12:50 a.m. when an emergency callwas made reporting a badly beaten young man lying in a roadsideditch near a railroad culvert. (No other call was reported that night. But the following morning, when news of the beating began to spreadthrough Perrysburg, an anonymous caller would report to police thathe’d seen what appeared to be a new-model Buick in the vicinity ofthe attack scene, parked off the highway shortly after midnight. Thecaller, slowing, then accelerating to speed past, had an impression offour or five young white men “involved in some activity like fight-ing.” The caller would supply police with the first three digits of a carregistered to Leo Dellamora.) By 12:50 a.m., however, Leo andMario were back home. They’d dropped Walt and Don Brinkhausoff, and come directly to Crescent Avenue. At this time they hadn’tknown, would claim they’d had no idea, that Jadro Filer had beenbeaten so badly he’d never regain consciousness. They were aroused, excited. Maybe a little panicked. I overheard them speaking togetherin low, urgent voices. I heard “nigger” several times repeated. I heardtheir nervous laughter.

The Complete Canadian Eldercare Guide: Expert Solutions to Help You Make the Best Decisions for Your Loved Ones - PDF
نویسندگان: Caroline Tapp-McDougall خلاصه: E ldercare and its inherent superhero responsibilities are the new facts of life for aging Canadians and the invincible baby boomers. Today, as adult sons and daughters with high-maintenance careers, as spouses with ailing partners or rela- tives, we find ourselves juggling work, life, and care responsibility. We are, as the saying goes, “sandwiched” between the care needs of others and our still-dependent children. Research shows that families are, for the most part, unpre- pared for the eldercare challenges that lie ahead. Many move directly into “care in crisis” mode, make plans on the fly, and regret not making decisions about aging issues in advance. Workplace health, wellness, and productivity issues are huge. Today, employers and governments identify productivity, absen- teeism, presenteeism, and retention as key factors for their aging work forces with the statistics pointing to eldercare as one of the biggest hurdles to overcome. Of note: • More than 3.5 million Canadians are currently over the age of 65. By the year 2020, that number will more than double.1 • For 70% of Canadians age 30 to 60, caregiving for aging parents is now a reality with eldercare being shared across families.2 • More than 70% of informal caregivers are women, most often wives (24%) or adult daughters (29%).
