The Think Big Manifesto: Think You Can't Change Your Life (and the World)? Think Again - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Michael Port, Mina Samuels خلاصه: One evening, years ago, I was brainstorming with someother business consultants. We were all throwing out ideasabout how we wanted to brand ourselves. When I was puton the spot, I said the first thing that came to my mind,“I’m the guy to call when you’re tired of thinking small.”The entire room became silent, until one of the womensaid, “Yes, that is so you!” Still, I immediately second-guessed myself, worrying that the tagline sounded toocheesy, stupid, arrogant, or worse, wasn’t true.Yet the more I floated the phrase to others, the morepositive the response was. “You make us feel capable ofdoing bigger things,” people said. “That’s why we hang10 | The Think Big Manifestoaround you.” I had never fully realized the impact I washaving on other people. It created a cycle of accountabil-ity. If they were relying on me to inspire them to thinkbigger, then I needed to keep on thinking bigger. Untilthen, I had always tried to think big in my life—not thatit wasn’t a challenge, not that sometimes I didn’t thinksmall. But if other people were looking to me for theirmotivation to think big, it made it all the more importantthat I keep working hard at thinking big in my own life.Because my big thinking wasn’t just about me, nor shouldit be. Thinking big is about me, you, and so many otherpeople—reaching out, inspiring and being inspired, andworking together to meet the challenges of our times, tomake change, and to create new opportunities. An important point — so I ’ll repeat it right away — is thatI do not think big every day. I can’t. It’s unlikely anyonecould live by this manifesto every moment. But I try. This is not just our manifesto, the manifesto of everyonewho is and wants to think big, it’s my personal mani-festo, too. I want to live by this every day. And althoughit’s unlikely I can live up to quite that standard everyminute, publishing this manifesto and leading the ThinkBig Revolution are ways to hold myself to the standardof thinking big. Just as important, or even more so, to
DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS OF WORLD WAR II - PDF
DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS OF WORLD WAR II - PDF
نویسندگان: James F. Dunnigan خلاصه: This is not a history of World War II , but revelations about many of thelesser-known details. Because it is a book of facts, you don't read itfrom beginning to end, but rather you jump in wherever it strikes yourfancy. There are over three hundred separate items, each a completestory in itself. As a rule, much of the information found in one section of the bookwill usually also be applicable to the others as well. After all, althoughaircraft carriers are inseparably associated with the Pacific war, theyalso performed yeoman service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, while the problems of troop transport transcended theater. After reading this book, you'll never look at World War II the sameway again. We have not changed the story of that conflict; we areproviding information about it that is not generally known. We oftenlook at the same subject from several different angles, giving you abetter appreciation of, for example, how a blitzkrieg was conducted, what it took to supply partisans, and why the U.S. Army had moreships than the U.S. Navy.World War II was the most enormous human drama in history. Noone volume could ever really come close to examining all of theunusual, and often important, aspects of this, history's greatest war. Somuch has had to be left out, from the drama of Dunkirk to the U.S.Navy's coal-burning, paddle-wheel aircraft carriers on the Great Lakes;from the Marine Corps's Navaho communications specialists to the12 INTRODUCTIONJapanese Navy's "American" pilots; not to mention the improbableadventures of FDR's son, the extraordinary antiarmor tactics of theFinns, and the secret missions of Harry Hopkins. Also left out are manyinteresting items from the "secondary" theaters such as China, Burma,Finland, and the Middle East. Moreover, the end of the Cold War hasthrown open the Soviet World War II archives. Much fascinating ma-terial is coming out. We were shown a volume (in Russian) of some ofthe newly revealed material already being published in Russia andrealized that we could have added several dozen pages of previouslyunknown goodies for this book from that one Russian volume alone.Well, if we sell enough copies of this book, there may be more. Wecertainly have enough to fill several more volumes. This book undoubtedly displays an "American" bias. This is nat-ural, given the audience. Without much difficulty the authors couldproduce a book of similar length with a "British" or "German" or"Chinese" bias which, while being somewhat repetitive, would stillmanage to include a lot of unusual and interesting material. World War II was the most enormous human drama in history, and there is farmore to be told about it than can possibly be included between thecovers of a single book.

Making Capitalism in China: The Taiwan Connection - PDF
نویسندگان: You-tien Hsing خلاصه: ew generations ago, the very idea ofretirement was foreign to the vast ma-jority of Americans. Retirement wasfor the well-to-do. Most peopleworked until they couldn’t physically(or legally) work any longer. They lived a few moreyears in greatly reduced circumstances—often withtheir adult children—and then they died. Social secu-rity was in its infancy, and anyhow, it was just a mini-mal safety net for the last couple of years of life.Company-paid health insurance and pensions wereuncommon. Most people’s lifetime earnings didn’tallow for much retirement savings, and the elderlywere the poorest age group in America. In the last 30 years or so, all of this has been turnedtopsy-turvy by simultaneous revolutions in health care, employment rights, pensions and government policiesthat encourage tax-deferred saving. Today most work-ers are protected from mandatory retirement by theAge Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) thatcovers workplaces of more than 20 employees and mostoccupations other than some such as highly paid execu-tives in policy-making positions, tenured university fac-ulty, fire fighting and law-enforcement personnel. On the other hand, many people who saved aggres-sively while they were young are able to retire muchearlier than age 65.Today millions of elderly Americans now live com-fortably in retirement, with income from a combina-tion of social security, private pensions and their ownsavings. Many retirees have significant health carecoverage from their previous employees.ixIntroduction

Readicide: How Schools Are Killing Reading and What You Can Do About It - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Kelly Gallagher خلاصه: Every year, those who publish dictionaries are faced with a central question:which emerging words should be added to the new editions? Because somewords have longer life expectancies than others, these decisions are not takenlightly. To make it into a dictionary, a new word must not only show evidencethat it has been around a few years but also that it demonstrates some indicationof staying power. With these criteria in mind, the editors at Merriam-Websterhave chosen a number of new entries for the Merriam-Webster’s CollegiateDictionary, eleventh edition (2006). Recognizing that new words can tell us a bitabout our culture, here are five of my favorites:drama queen: noun, a person given to often excessively emotionalperformances or reactionsgastric bypass: noun, a surgical bypass operation that typicallyinvolves reducing the size of the stomach and reconnecting the smallerstomach to bypass the first portion of the small intestine so as torestrict food intake and reduce caloric absorption in cases of severeobesity

Building an Electronic Disease Register: Getting the Computer to Work for You (Primary Care Health Informatics) - PDF
نویسندگان: Alan Gillies, Bev Ellis, Nick Lowe خلاصه: This book has two aims. The first is to demonstrate that computers can work foryou and not the other way around. No, please don't laugh ... it really is possible.Computers can play a major role in improving patient health and patient care. However, in order to achieve this, it is necessary to do a number of things:• computerise patient records• implement systems to process those records in accordance with best knownpractice and available evidence• change working practices and procedures• train staff to give them new skills• manage the process of change. Thus the second aim of the book is to show how to do these things in practice. Weshall use the example of an electronic coronary heart disease register (CHD) toshow how this may be achieved. We shall draw upon a case study from a local primary care group (PCG) wherewe shall consider the implementation in two practices, with different proprietarygeneral practice systems. We shall consider the example from the perspective of aGP and a practice manager.

نویسندگان: Cecily von Ziegesar خلاصه: Do you ever feel like the luckiest girl alive? Well, you’re not, because I am. At this moment, I’m sunningmyself on über-social, totally gorgeous Main Beach in East Hampton, watching the preppy boys pull offtheir pastel Lacoste polos and smear Coppertone all over their sun-dappled shoulders. See, there’s areason any New Yorker who doesn’t want to leave the city completely summers in the Hamptons, andit’s the same reason people wear Christian Louboutin strappy sandals or fly first class: the best is justbetter.Speaking of the best, nobody does it better than Eres. I’m a modest girl, but even I think I look prettystunning in my mango-colored halter bikini top and matching boy shorts. Okay, maybe I’m not thatmodest, but why should I be? If you were looking this gorgeous lolling about on a white sand EastHampton beach, you’d be talking about it too. As I learned in my private, all-girls’ Upper East Sideelementary school, it’s not bragging if it’s true.

نویسندگان: Terry L. Anderson, Laura E. Huggins خلاصه: The Hoover Institution is designing and implementing task forces onspecific topics that coincide with Hoover’s ongoing research initiatives.Representing multiyear efforts, the task forces will adopt a method-ology whereby a team of experts, both Hoover fellows and otherprominent scholars, are brought together and organized as a team, or“virtual faculty,” to work on commonly defined topics and projects. One of these new task force efforts, with lead sponsorship by Johnand Jean DeNault, is the Task Force on Property Rights, Freedom, and Prosperity. The premise behind Terry Anderson and Laura Huggin’s newbook, Greener Than Thou, complements Hoover’s broader effort ofunderstanding the role of property rights in a free society in the above-mentioned task force. In Greener Than Thou, Anderson and Hugginsaddress the critical link between property ownership and care for as-sets, as evidenced in the poignantly titled chapter 4, “No One Washesa Rental Car.” Throughout the book, Anderson and Huggins delvedeeply into how best to use property rights and markets to convertthe environment from a problem into an asset, providing a convincingalternative to regulation via the property rights and market path. Notonly do property rights lead to prosperity, which in turn leads toenvironmental quality, but the combination of property rights andmarkets makes the environment an asset that can receive careful ste-wardship from its owner.
