نویسندگان: William Thomason خلاصه: f you picked up this book looking for information on financialplanning, then put it down and find another one. This is not a bookon financial planning. Instead, this book tells how you can:• Accumulate wealth through investing.• Be your own research analyst and portfolio manager.• Create and manage your own investment portfolio to reachyour own personal financial goals.I’m not a financial planner, nor am I a stockbroker. I am what iscalled in the financial services industry a portfolio manager, I man-age—and that means I make the investment decisions for—both in-dividual and institutional money in a variety of investment portfoliosfor my firm’s clientele. I have experience managing traditional in-vestments (such as stocks and bonds) and also alternative invest-ments (such as hedge funds). But, even more importantly, I am alsoan individual investor like you. I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon inmy mouth nor did I ever receive any type of large inheritance. I amtelling you this about myself because I want you to know that you, asan individual investor, can build a substantial investment portfolio byfollowing the ideas laid out in this book. Each day normally thoughtful and conservative people throwcaution (and their hard-earned money) to the wind when they heara stock tip that is nothing more than rumor. Others, for fear of mak-ing a mistake, keep their money invested in mediocre stocks and mu-tual funds simply because they don’t know what to do or whoseadvice to trust. Many others feel they need large sums of money be-fore they can begin to invest in stocks or anything else. I’m an advo-cate of stocks and the financial markets, and I will show you how toinvest in the stock market and buy a stock even if you have only $20.Don’t believe me? Keep reading

Zoos and Animal Welfare (Issues That Concern You) - PDF
نویسندگان: Peggy Daniels خلاصه: Z oos have evolved over time from symbols of power and pres-tige of the early rulers, to institutions for education andresearch, to powerful businesses, and ultimately to a beacon ofhope in a world facing alarming rates of extinction. Yet to some, zoos have always been and continue to be prisons where other-wise healthy animals waste away inside depressing enclosures, fac-ing a lifetime of neglect. These critics will need a lot of convinc-ing to believe that zoos can be beneficial to animals. People canlearn more about the fears of critics and the future of zoos by trac-ing their evolution over time.History of ZoosWild animals have been displayed in captivity for thousands ofyears. According to most sources the first known zoos were largecollections of animals assembled in Egypt around 2500 B.C. Exoticwild animals were captured on expeditions, then displayed in cap-tivity by early rulers as symbols of wealth and power. In 1500 B.C.Queen Hatshepsut of Egypt built a zoo, and about five hundredyears later the Chinese emperor Wen Wang constructed theGarden of Intelligence—an enormous zoo that sprawled over 1,500acres (607ha). Later many smaller zoos were founded by rulers innorthern Africa, India, and China to show off the strength andriches of the current regime.Studies also show that the Romans kept wild animals in cap-tivity and sent them into battle in bloody public spectacles. Lions, bears, elephants, and other creatures were forced to fight to thedeath in public arenas to the cheers and shouts of onlookers. The birth of the modern zoo did not happen until 1828, whenthe London Zoo dedicated itself to the study of captive wildlifein London. The success of the London Zoo set off a wave of sim-ilar establishments, including the first zoological garden in7INTRODUCTIONMelbourne, Australia, and the New York City Zoo. In 1889 theU.S. Congress established the National Zoo for the purpose ofbreeding native wildlife

Punishment and Democracy: Three Strikes and You're Out in California (Studies in Crime and Public Policy X) - PDF
نویسندگان: Franklin E. Zimring, Gordon Hawkins, Sam Kamin خلاصه: The “Three strikes and you’re out” legislation adopted in Californiain 1994, was, at the same time, typical of recent American penalpolicy and decidedly unique. It is typical because of its orientation(long and mandatory terms of imprisonment), its devotion to sym-bolic gestures and slogans, and its willingness to displace discretionwith binding general commitments to particular punishments. TheCalifornia version was only 1 of 26 laws with that label passed in athree-year period during the 1990s, and the Three Strikes approachwas only 1 of many punitive reforms of the 1990s.What sets California’s law apart from the other Three Strikes lawsand every other penal law innovation of recent times is the extremityof its terms and the revolutionary nature of its ambitions. This statutewas drafted by outsiders to have the maximum possible impact oncriminal punishments. Whereas most penal laws are designed todeliver less drastic changes than they advertise—to bark louder thanthey bite—the California statute was designed to operate even morebroadly than its specialized title would suggest. It was a law de-signed to bite louder than it barked. The origin and impact of this legislation would have been an im-portant subject no matter which state had adopted it, but the settingfor the new law provided an even more compelling case for a majorstudy. The state of California is one of the largest criminal justice sys-tems in the free world. Its prisons and jails held almost a quarter of amillion inmates before the new law took effect. The California prisonsystem had grown more than fivefold in the 14 years prior to ThreeStrikes and already was larger than any prison system in the Westernworld. This was not only an extreme experiment but also one imple-mented in a very large and greatly expanded system.

As You Like It (Shakespeare in Production) - PDF
نویسندگان: William Shakespeare, Cynthia Marshall خلاصه: Of this play the fable is wild and pleasing’, wrote Samuel Johnson of As YouLike It.1 The play in performance has sometimes veered towards the ‘wild’side, appearing a dangerously subversive work that exposes the instabilityof traditional values. At other moments it has been simply ‘pleasing’, astalwart demonstration of conventional social mores; this aspect promptedGeorge Bernard Shaw to accuse Shakespeare of ‘exploit[ing] the fondnessof the British Public for sham moralizing and stage “philosophy”.’2 Theplay’s ability to encompass these extremes tells an interesting story aboutchanging cultural and theatrical practices. Tracing the history of As YouLike It in the theatre and on film shows the extent to which a playscript is anevolving document that can be radically shaped in performance. Directors, actors, and venues are obviously central to this shaping process, and thecurrent incarnation of As You Like It bears the imprint of various theatricalfigures and general alterations in styles and playing places. Perhaps even moresignificant in following how the play has been evoked is a consideration ofthe wide and shifting context of social codes, gender norms, and attitudestowards the arts, especially theatre. The production history of As You LikeIt affords us a focused view of major social, political, and aesthetic changesover the past four centuries. At the same time, the performance history of As You Like It testifies to theparticular artistic poise of this comedy, written in 1600 when Shakespearewas at the height of his powers. A mode of refreshment and regeneration,Shakespearean comedy does not merely entertain by providing diversion, but seeks to accommodate viewers to the world in which they live. Towardsthis end, As You Like It addresses and seeks to manage a number of tensionsof social life, and achieves success through its ‘power to express conflictand order it in art’.3 Its formal balance does not eradicate the importanceof the play’s historical context, however. Because As You Like It seeks toorder specifically social ills, it draws on and develops changing conceptionsof how people relate to one another, individually and in groups. In otherwords, the interrelation of diachroni

You Can't Fight Tanks with Bayonets: Psychological Warfare against the Japanese Army in the Southwest Pacific (Studies in War, Society, and the Militar) - PDF
نویسندگان: Allison B. Gilmore خلاصه: In November 1944, during a lull in the intense fighting so characteristic of the Pacific War, a Japanese sol-dier made the following entry in his diary: ‘’I won’t go so far as to say it is absolutely impossible but I don’tthink we can win the war with Japanese spirit alone.” 1 Although the average GI would have found these wordsof little interest or importance, they were immensely heartening to Allied propagandists charged with the taskof inducing demoralization among enemy combatants. For this seemingly insignificant diary entry and manyothers akin to it provided evidence that soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA ) were losing confidencein their ability to win the “Greater East Asia War” and recognizing the vital importance played by materialfactors in wartime. Similar statements proffered by Japanese prisoners of war (POWS ) and found in documentsretrieved from battlefields throughout the Pacific were important sources of intelligence for psychologicalwarfare personnel, whose job it was to hasten Japan’s defeat by waging a propaganda campaign to diminishJapanese confidence in their ability to achieve victory.Historians have written hundreds of volumes about World War II. Many of them analyze various aspects ofthe Pacific War, and some examine the subject of psychological warfare (psywar), but rarely do these twolines of scholarly inquiry intersect. The bulk of the studies of psychological operations in World War II per-tain to the European Theater of Operations (ETO). John W. Dower’s War without Mercy: Race and Power inthe Pacific War assesses the impact of racial hatred, cultural stereotypes, and psychological factors on theconduct of the Pacific War. Yet his treatment of wartime atrocities, Japanese adherence to “death before disho-nor,” and Americans “obsessed with the task of slaughter” reveals only part of the story. 2 Although he refersto the surrender of demoralized Japanese soldiers, the subject is peripheral to his work. This is understanda-ble given his focus, yet one is left with a very clear impression that such occurrences were extraordinarily rareand insignificant events. More problematic is Dower’s assertion that Americans in decision-making positionswere so singularly unimpressed with the idea of waging a serious propaganda campaign against the Japanesethat “such ideas had little impact.”3 In fact, this is not the case. Psywar was not an afterthought on the part ofAllied military commanders, nor was it always perceived as some ‘’impractical plaything of effete civilians.”4In their attempts to demoralize Japanese troops Allied propagandists in the Southwest Pacific alone dissemi-nated nearly 400 million propaganda leaflets and witnessed the capture of approximately 19,500 Japanese pri-soners.

نویسندگان: L. Ron Hubbard خلاصه: A ND it was a golden age.The 1930s and 1940s were a vibrant, seminal time fora gigantic audience of eager readers, probably the largest percapita audience of readers in American history. The magazineracks were chock-full of publications with ragged trims, garishcover art, cheap brown pulp paper, low cover prices—and themost excitement you could hold in your hands.“Pulp” magazines, named for their rough-cut, pulpwoodpaper, were a vehicle for more amazing tales than Scheherazadecould have told in a million and one nights. Set apart fromhigher-class “slick” magazines, printed on fancy glossy paperwith quality artwork and superior production values, thepulps were for the “rest of us,” adventure story after adventurestory for people who liked to read. Pulp fiction authors wereno-holds-barred entertainers — real storytellers. They weremore interested in a thrilling plot twist, a horrific villain ora white-knuckle adventure than they were in lavish prose orconvoluted metaphors.

نویسندگان: Rick A. Morris, Brette McWhorter Sember خلاصه: Welcome to a Project Management That Works: Real-World Advice on Com-municating, Problem Solving, and Everything Else You Need to Know to Getthe Job Done. The growth in project management is undeniable and is one ofthe fastest-growing occupations in the world. PMI ® has seen membershipgrowth of 1,000 percent in the last 10 years, with members in 157 countries. The membership continues to rise at a rate of 30 percent each year. The U.S.Department of Labor predicts explosive growth for the profession through2014. Because this is such an exploding profession, there is a great need for aguidebook to help both new and experienced project managers improve theirskills and procedures. This book is designed to do just that.Roughly 7 years ago, I was part of one of the worst projects that I have everencountered. I was always away from my family, was not excited about myjob, and depressed. I was questioning whether or not I wanted to remain aproject manager or choose another career path. I decided to walk aimlesslythroughout a mall while I contemplated my future. I ended up in a bookstoreand wandered over to the business section. I picked up a book called RadicalProject Management by Rob Thomsett. It was a new take on some commonproject management theories and presented new ways of looking at managingprojects. I was so enthralled by the book that I read it cover to cover rightthere in the store. It made a significant impact on me and how I manage proj-ects. I decided to stay a project manager.Reflecting on that time, I decided that I wanted to write a book that didmore than just discuss proper project management techniques. Really, Iwanted to write a book that was a culmination of the lessons learned, frustra-tions, and events that have been experienced throughout my career. This isthat book. There is a significant gap between the principles of project manage-ment and the application of project management in many corporate environ-ments. I often compare it to taking a driving test. We were all taught that yourhands should be kept at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, to signal a certain dis-tance from a turn, and how to properly merge. Yet, almost all of us will breakmany of those rules when we get behind the wheel of a car. Project manage-ment is the same way. Trained project managers learn the principles and rea-sons for running a successful project. However, when it comes to running theproject, we tend to selectively decide what we will and will not do

نویسندگان: Sabrina Jordan خلاصه: Chapter OneIam a girly-girl.With three older brothers who areobsessed with sports and cars and videogames, it would have been easy for me to growup a tomboy, but I didn’t.From the time I was little, I’ve loved beinga girl! Dresses with ruffles. Colored tights.Shiny black Mary Janes. I used to wear themall! Very rarely would I wear T-shirts andjeans, but if I did, there was always somethingfeminine about them. Like my jeans wouldn’t1be blue. They’d be yellow or purple andtrimmed with lace on the cuffs. And my T-shirts would say things like: DADDY’S LITTLEGIRL or SWEET AS SUGAR.I used to have tea parties with my stuffedanimals and I would serve cakes made with myEasy-Bake oven. Cliché, I know. I even hadevery Barbie imaginable, including all theaccessories, as well as a few Bratz dolls.Confession: I always loved my Barbies morethan my Bratz dolls. Barbie just seemed moreelegant. And she had her own Dream House!I’ve always had pierced ears. My oldestbrother, Rob, who’s nineteen and just finishedhis first year of college, says this is becausewhen I was a baby and our mom used to takeme out in my carriage, people would alwaysstop her and say, “What a cute baby boy!” eventhough I was wearing pink and I had a PebblesFlintstone hairstyle (a tuft of hair sticking upon the top of my head and tied with a bright-colored ribbon).Earrings are fun. My jewelry box is filledwith all sorts of different styles. Some days I2like wearing tiny hoops. Other days I likewearing earrings that are long and dangling.Sometimes I’ll just go simple and wear goldstuds. My mom has a fabulous earring collec-tion and sometimes she’ll let me borrow a pair, but only if I ask permission. Sneaking into herjewelry box is not allowed. That’s because herearrings are made of real gold and silver anddiamonds while mine are all pretty much cos-tume jewelry. When I was little, my mom used to braidmy hair in pigtails. Some days she’d give me aponytail. But whatever hairstyle she gave me,she always used silk ribbons and cute barrettesand hair clips. My hair is still long and I lovestyling it in different ways. No short-and-sassyhairstyle for me! My hair reaches past myshoulders to the middle of my back and thecolor is chestnut brown, although sometimes, like during the summer, if I’m out in the sun fora long time, highlights will appear. My bestfriend, Caitlyn, is always telling me she wouldkill to have my hair. I don’t know what she’scomplaining about. Her hair is super curly and3a gorgeous red color. Not carrot red but a richauburn. Like in shampoo ads in magazines. Butshe hates the color and is always trying tostraighten the curls out of her hair.Caitlyn and I have been best friends sincekindergarten. On the first day of school, weboth brought our Cabbage Patch Kids toschool for show-and-tell. The dolls were identi-cal and we decided that they were long-lost sis-ters and it was up to us to make sure theystayed in touch.Caitlyn practically lives at my house andwhen we’re not hanging out together, we’reeither on the phone or instant messaging whenwe’re online. We tell each other everythingalthough there’s a secret I’ve been keepingfrom her. It’s not that I don’t want to tell her mysecret, but I can’t. I’ve been told that part of thejob I’ve just taken is keeping my identity asecret.I know this all sounds mysterious and con-fusing, but it really isn’t. And there’s a perfectlylogical explanation.4This September I’ll be a freshman at NorthMarshall High School and I’ve been picked toinherit the job of being the anonymous fresh-man advice columnist, Dear Daisy, for the highschool’s website. Daisy has been around forever.I think she was even giving out advice whenmy parents were both freshmen there! Beforewebsites existed, she had her own column inthe school’s newspaper. Every year a newfreshman takes over as Daisy, writing the col-umn and dispensing advice.Working on my junior high’s newspaper, writing and editing articles, is what got me thejob of Dear Daisy. I know the importance ofextracurricular activities. Colleges look for thatkind of stuff in addition to good grades, so it’snever too early to start participating. My guidance counselor, who I met when Iwent to pick up my class schedule in June, wasthe one who told me about the Dear Daisyposition. He thought I would be good at it, buthe also told me that there were five other girlswho were just as qualified as I was to take overthe column. If I was interested in becoming5Dear Daisy, then I’d have to submit a samplecolumn and after all the columns were com-pared, a decision would be made
