You've Changed: Sex Reassignment and Personal Identity (Studies in Feminist Philosophy) - PDF
نویسندگان: Laurie J. Shrage (editor) خلاصه: Is sex identity a feature of one's mind or body, and is it a relational or intrinsic property? Who is in the best position to know a person's sex, do we each have a true sex, and is a person's sex an alterable characteristic? When a person's sex assignment changes, has the old self disappeared and a new one emerged; or, has only the public presentation of one's self changed? "You've Changed" examines the philosophical questions raised by the phenomenon of sex reassignment, and brings together the essays of scholars known for their work in gender, sexuality, queer, and disability studies, feminist epistemology and science studies, and philosophical accounts of personal identity. An interdisciplinary contribution to the emerging field of transgender studies, it will be of interest to students and scholars in a number of disciplines.

Pound خلاصه: An IOC insider speaks out on creating a drug-free sports cultureWith doping charges leveled at athletes in baseball, cycling, and in the Olympics, cheating has, to many onlookers, become the norm in pro sports. With implications far beyond the sports arena, Inside Dope examines the genesis of doping in sports as well as in the world of doctors and trainers; drug testing and the battle to stay ahead of users; drug companies and big business; and the role of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as watchdog. Written by a former Olympian, an IOC official, and a passionate advocate of fair play in sports, this eye-opening book takes a candid look at testing standards and the future of doping and sports and the larger issue of how doping affects the public perception of athletes.
God wants you to Learn, Labor, and Love - PDF
God wants you to Learn, Labor, and Love - PDF
نویسندگان: Thomas Schirrmacher خلاصه: In the Old Testament, the term ‘disciple’ or ‘student’ is often used todesignate a person who believes in God. “The LOrd God has given me theear of the learned ... He awakens me morning by morning, He awakens Myear to hear as the learned” (Isa. 50:4-5). The word ‘disciple’ is derivedfrom the Latin term ‘discipulus’ and means ‘a pupil’. The New Testamentfirst uses the term ‘mathetes’ to designate the twelve apostles (beginningwith John 2:2 and in general in this gospel) and then to describe all follow-ers of Jesus (Luke 6:17, Acts 9:25). The Great Commission, which alsouses this word, expressly speaks of teaching and of doing what has beenlearned, “... make disciples of all the nations ... teaching them to observeall things that I have commanded you ...” (Mt. 28:18-20). Christians arestudents who never stop learning, a characteristic typical of wisdom. Themore one knows, the more one realizes how little one knows and howmuch more there is to learn, “... The fear of the LOrd is the beginning ofwisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs9:8-10).

I Am You: The Metaphysical Foundations for Global Ethics - PDF
I Am You: The Metaphysical Foundations for Global Ethics - PDF
نویسندگان: Daniel Kolak خلاصه: Borders enclose and separate us. We assign to them tremendous significance. Along them we draw supposedly uncrossable boundaries within which we believe our individual identities begin and end, erecting the metaphysical dividing walls that enclose each one of us into numerically identical, numerically distinct, entities: persons. Do the borders between us—physical, psychological, neurological, causal, spatial, temporal, etc.—merit the metaphysical significance ordinarily accorded them? The central thesis of I Am You is that our borders do not signify boundaries between persons. We are all the same person. Variations on this heretical theme have been voiced periodically throughout the ages (the Upanishads, Averroës, Giordano Bruno, Josiah Royce, Schrödinger, Fred Hoyle, Freeman Dyson). In presenting his arguments, the author relies on detailed analyses of recent formal work on personal identity, especially that of Derek Parfit, Sydney Shoemaker, Robert Nozick, David Wiggins, Daniel C. Dennett and Thomas Nagel, while incorporating the views of Descartes, Leibniz, Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer, Kant, Husserl and Brouwer. His development of the implied moral theory is inspired by, and draws on, Rawls, Sidgwick, Kant and again Parfit. The traditional, commonsense view that we are each a separate person numerically identical to ourselves over time, i.e., that personal identity is closed under known individuating and identifying borders—what the author calls Closed Individualism—is shown to be incoherent. The demonstration that personal identity is not closed but open points collectively in one of two new directions: either there are no continuously existing, self-identical persons over time in the sense ordinarily understood—the sort of view developed by philosophers as diverse as Buddha, Hume and most recently Derek Parfit, what the author calls Empty Individualism—or else you are everyone, i.e., personal identity is not closed under known individuating and identifying borders, what the author calls Open Individualism. In making his case, the author:

School Violence (Issues That Concern You) - PDF
نویسندگان: Peggy Daniels خلاصه: As incidents of violence in and around schools make newsheadlines with disturbing frequency, school violence con-tinues to be one of the most hotly debated topics in America.Public discussion often focuses on questions that have no easyanswers: What causes school violence? What can be done toprevent violence in schools? What makes schools safe? Someexperts believe the large size of many modern schools is toblame, while others claim that bullying, low self-esteem, socialisolation, and pressure to conform are all contributors to out-breaks of school violence. To maintain an environment that al-lows students to learn in a safe setting, some schools are turningto increased campus security. Others are exploring alternativeprevention strategies that encourage individual responsibility, such as youth leadership programs and mentoring. These ideas, along with many other aspects of the school violence issue, areaddressed in this volume.
