Seeing and Visualizing: It's Not What You Think - PDF
نویسندگان: Zenon W. Pylyshyn خلاصه: In Seeing and Visualizing, Zenon Pylyshyn argues that seeing is different from thinking and that to see is not, as it may seem intuitively, to create an inner replica of the world. Pylyshyn examines how we see and how we visualize and why the scientific account does not align with the way these processes seem to us "from the inside." In doing so, he addresses issues in vision science, cognitive psychology, philosophy of mind, and cognitive neuroscience.First, Pylyshyn argues that there is a core stage of vision independent from the influence of our prior beliefs and examines how vision can be intelligent and yet essentially knowledge-free. He then proposes that a mechanism within the vision module, called a visual index (or FINST), provides a direct preconceptual connection between parts of visual representations and things in the world, and he presents various experiments that illustrate the operation of this mechanism. He argues that such a deictic reference mechanism is needed to account for many properties of vision, including how mental images attain their apparent spatial character without themselves being laid out in space in our brains. The final section of the book examines the "picture theory" of mental imagery, including recent neuroscience evidence, and asks whether any current evidence speaks to the issue of the format of mental images. This analysis of mental imagery brings together many of the themes raised throughout the book and provides a framework for considering such issues as the distinction between the form and the content of representations, the role of vision in thought, and the relation between behavioral, neuroscientific, and phenomenological evidence regarding mental representations.

A Career in Modeling: You Don't Have to Be a Glamorous Supermodel - Opportunities Today for People of All Types and Looks - PDF
نویسندگان: Institute For Career Research خلاصه: have portrayed women in a more human, more realistic light, though littleof this artwork survives.)Modeling in former times was not considered a respectable career.Traditionally, the artist’s model was a nobody. She may have come from alower-class background with little education and nothing to offer but heryouth and beauty. She was often the lover of the artist, who discarded herwhen she ceased to inspire him. Her career was short-lived, and she hadno champion to make sure she was paid well while she worked and hadplans for her post-modeling future. What a difference a few centuries make!Today, as anyone with access to television or magazines knows, supermodels are among the ultimate celebrities and role models. Thedesire to become one of these objects of desire is at a fever pitch, andcompetition to sustain success, once achieved, is intense. To be sure, the rewards are many and do include fame, fortune andfun. But modeling is an exceedingly risky business, and a great manycareers fizzle after just a few years. This report will help you determine if you have what it takes tobecome a model – and it’s not necessarily the physical perfection you mayhave imagined. Rebecca Gayheart and Kate Moss were both told that theywere too short to be models, but they prevailed by emphasizing theirunique assets and exhibiting enthusiasm and professionalism at all times.Furthermore, not all models slink down runways wearing jadedexpressions and outrageous costumes. As a recent advertising campaignfor The Body Shop put it, “There are 3 billion women who don’t look likesupermodels, and only eight who do.” This suggests there is opportunityfor a variety of people and types. Today, there’s room for plus-size, petites, men of all ages, people of color and various ethnic appearances, and“real” looking people in the business. If you’re 5’4" there’s no way you’regoing to be an haute couture runway model, but you could have a futurein other types of modeling.

Living Well with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know - PDF
نویسندگان: Mary J. Shomon خلاصه: From the author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia--vital help for the millions of people suffering from pain, fatigue, and sleep problems. Recent studies indicate that 3 to 6 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia--a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. This terrible condition is often accompanied by chronic fatigue syndrome, a persistent and debilitating sense of exhaustion that is estimated to affect 800,000 Americans--twice the number of people with multiple sclerosis. Yet there are no official blood tests of diagnostic procedures that can confirm that yes, you definitely have these conditions, and in fact, a whole segment of the medical world doesn't even believe these two diseases actually exist. In addition, the few books that are on the market tend to focus on single solutions or eschew conventional and pharmaceutical approaches, which could alienate readers who use conventional medicine in whole or part. In her trademark accessible, easy-to-follow style, patient advocate Mary J. Shomon integrates the latest findings regarding these misunderstood conditions. Highlighting the pros and cons of the antibiotic, metabolic/endocrine, hormonal, musculoskeletal, and many other approaches to treatment, Shomon explores the fads and viable alternatives--both conventional and alternative--and provides helpful, clear solutions to help sufferers of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. At various points since 1995, Mary J. Shomon has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Since then, she has transformed her health challenges into a mission as a nationally-known patient advocate. She has worked for more than 20 years in writing, advertising, public relations, and communications and is the founder and editor-in-chief of several thyroid, autoimmune, and nutrition newsletters, as well as the internet's most popular thyroid disease website, www.thyroid-info.com.

So You've Been in an Accident, Now What?: Everyone's Guide to Personal Injury Law - PDF
نویسندگان: Daniel C. Cuppett خلاصه: Most people feel two things after they’ve been in a car accident--or any accident: Fear and anger. As a result, they don’t always make good decisions about how to act and what to say in the aftermath. Lawyers and insurance companies know this--and take advantage of the confusion. In this book, an attorney with a successful personal injury practice gives ordinary consumers an insider’s advice on what to do and what to say. The book follows a chronological path from the moment an accident takes place through the final settlement of any legal disputes that follow. It deals with various scenarios--most importantly, whether the accident was your fault or someone else’s. And it considers the many matters that aren’t legal--but just as important to someone recovering physically, emotionally and financially from an accident.

As You Like It (Shakespeare in Production) - PDF
نویسندگان: William Shakespeare, Cynthia Marshall خلاصه: Of this play the fable is wild and pleasing’, wrote Samuel Johnson of As YouLike It.1 The play in performance has sometimes veered towards the ‘wild’side, appearing a dangerously subversive work that exposes the instabilityof traditional values. At other moments it has been simply ‘pleasing’, astalwart demonstration of conventional social mores; this aspect promptedGeorge Bernard Shaw to accuse Shakespeare of ‘exploit[ing] the fondnessof the British Public for sham moralizing and stage “philosophy”.’2 Theplay’s ability to encompass these extremes tells an interesting story aboutchanging cultural and theatrical practices. Tracing the history of As YouLike It in the theatre and on film shows the extent to which a playscript is anevolving document that can be radically shaped in performance. Directors, actors, and venues are obviously central to this shaping process, and thecurrent incarnation of As You Like It bears the imprint of various theatricalfigures and general alterations in styles and playing places. Perhaps even moresignificant in following how the play has been evoked is a consideration ofthe wide and shifting context of social codes, gender norms, and attitudestowards the arts, especially theatre. The production history of As You LikeIt affords us a focused view of major social, political, and aesthetic changesover the past four centuries. At the same time, the performance history of As You Like It testifies to theparticular artistic poise of this comedy, written in 1600 when Shakespearewas at the height of his powers. A mode of refreshment and regeneration,Shakespearean comedy does not merely entertain by providing diversion, but seeks to accommodate viewers to the world in which they live. Towardsthis end, As You Like It addresses and seeks to manage a number of tensionsof social life, and achieves success through its ‘power to express conflictand order it in art’.3 Its formal balance does not eradicate the importanceof the play’s historical context, however. Because As You Like It seeks toorder specifically social ills, it draws on and develops changing conceptionsof how people relate to one another, individually and in groups. In otherwords, the interrelation of diachroni

You Can't Fight Tanks with Bayonets: Psychological Warfare against the Japanese Army in the Southwest Pacific (Studies in War, Society, and the Militar) - PDF
نویسندگان: Allison B. Gilmore خلاصه: In November 1944, during a lull in the intense fighting so characteristic of the Pacific War, a Japanese sol-dier made the following entry in his diary: ‘’I won’t go so far as to say it is absolutely impossible but I don’tthink we can win the war with Japanese spirit alone.” 1 Although the average GI would have found these wordsof little interest or importance, they were immensely heartening to Allied propagandists charged with the taskof inducing demoralization among enemy combatants. For this seemingly insignificant diary entry and manyothers akin to it provided evidence that soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA ) were losing confidencein their ability to win the “Greater East Asia War” and recognizing the vital importance played by materialfactors in wartime. Similar statements proffered by Japanese prisoners of war (POWS ) and found in documentsretrieved from battlefields throughout the Pacific were important sources of intelligence for psychologicalwarfare personnel, whose job it was to hasten Japan’s defeat by waging a propaganda campaign to diminishJapanese confidence in their ability to achieve victory.Historians have written hundreds of volumes about World War II. Many of them analyze various aspects ofthe Pacific War, and some examine the subject of psychological warfare (psywar), but rarely do these twolines of scholarly inquiry intersect. The bulk of the studies of psychological operations in World War II per-tain to the European Theater of Operations (ETO). John W. Dower’s War without Mercy: Race and Power inthe Pacific War assesses the impact of racial hatred, cultural stereotypes, and psychological factors on theconduct of the Pacific War. Yet his treatment of wartime atrocities, Japanese adherence to “death before disho-nor,” and Americans “obsessed with the task of slaughter” reveals only part of the story. 2 Although he refersto the surrender of demoralized Japanese soldiers, the subject is peripheral to his work. This is understanda-ble given his focus, yet one is left with a very clear impression that such occurrences were extraordinarily rareand insignificant events. More problematic is Dower’s assertion that Americans in decision-making positionswere so singularly unimpressed with the idea of waging a serious propaganda campaign against the Japanesethat “such ideas had little impact.”3 In fact, this is not the case. Psywar was not an afterthought on the part ofAllied military commanders, nor was it always perceived as some ‘’impractical plaything of effete civilians.”4In their attempts to demoralize Japanese troops Allied propagandists in the Southwest Pacific alone dissemi-nated nearly 400 million propaganda leaflets and witnessed the capture of approximately 19,500 Japanese pri-soners.
