نویسندگان: Julia Quinn خلاصه: ―Annabel!‖Annabel snapped to attention. Louisa was addressing her with uncommon urgency, and she‘d dowell to listen.―Annabel, this is important,‖ Louisa said.Annabel nodded, and an unfamiliar feeling washed over her—maybe of gratitude, certainly oflove. She‘d only just got to know her cousin, but already there was a deep bond of affection, andshe knew that Louisa would do everything in her power to keep Annabel from making anunhappy alliance.Unfortunately, Louisa‘s power was, in this capacity, limited. And she did not—no, she couldnot—understand the pressures of being the eldest daughter of an impoverished family.―Listen to me,‖ Louisa implored. ―Lord Newbury‘s son died, oh, I think it must be a bit over ayear ago. And he started looking for a wife before his son was cold in his grave.‖―Shouldn‘t he have found one by now, then?‖Louisa shook her head. ―He almost married Mariel Willingham.‖―Who?‖ Annabel blinked, trying to place the name.―Exactly. You‘ve never heard of her. She died.‖Annabel felt her eyebrows rise. It was really a rather emotionless delivery of such tragic news.―Two days before the wedding she took a chill.‖―She died in only two days?‖ Annabel asked. It was a morbid question, but, well, she had toknow.―No. Lord Newbury insisted upon delaying the ceremony. He said it was for her welfare, thatshe was too ill to stand up in church, but everyone knew that he really just wanted to make sureshe was healthy enough to bear him a son.‖―And then?‖―Well, and then she did die. She lingered for about a fortnight. It was really very sad. She wasalways very kind to me.‖ Louisa gave her head a little shake, then continued. ―It was a near missfor Lord Newbury. If he‘d married her, he would have had to go into mourning. As it was, hehad already tried to wed scandalously soon after his son‘s death. If Miss Willingham hadn‘t diedbefore the wedding, he‘d have had another year of black.‖―How long did he wait before looking for someone else?‖ Annabel asked, dreading the answer.―Not more than two weeks. Honestly, I don‘t think he would have waited that long if he thoughthe could have got away with it.‖ Louisa looked about, her eyes falling on Annabel‘s sherry. ―Ineed some tea,‖ she said.

Fire From the Midst of You: A Religious Life of John Brown - PDF
نویسندگان: Jr., Louis Decaro خلاصه: John Brown is usually remembered as a terrorist whose unbridled hatred of slavery drove him to the ill-fated raid on Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in 1859. Tried and executed for seizing the arsenal and attempting to spur a liberation movement among the slaves, Brown was the ultimate cause celebre for a country on the brink of civil war.“Fire from the Midst of You” situates Brown within the religious and social context of a nation steeped in racism, showing his roots in Puritan abolitionism. DeCaro explores Brown's unusual family heritage as well as his business and personal losses, retracing his path to the Southern gallows. In contrast to the popular image of Brown as a violent fanatic, DeCaro contextualizes Brown's actions, emphasizing the intensely religious nature of the antebellum U.S. in which he lived. He articulates the nature of Brown's radical faith and shows that, when viewed in the context of his times, he was not the religious fanatic that many have understood him to be. DeCaro calls Brown a “Protestant saint”—an imperfect believer seeking to realize his own perceived calling in divine providence. In line with the post-millennial theology of his day, Brown understood God as working through mankind and the church to renew and revive sinful humanity. He read the Bible not only as God's word, but as God's word to John Brown. DeCaro traces Brown's life and development to show how by forging faith as a radical weapon, Brown forced the entire nation to a point of crisis. “Fire from the Midst of You” defies the standard narrative with a new reading of John Brown. Here is the man that the preeminent Black scholar W.E.B. Du Bois called a "mighty warning" and the one Malcolm X called “a real white liberal.”

نویسندگان: Brenda Della Casa خلاصه: ecently my girlfriends and I uncorked severalbottles of wine, sat back, and shared our deepest secrets, best advice, and most candid opinions about men, love, dating, and relationships. We werehaving quite the little pity-party when itoccurred to me that we were all complaining about the samething: no man was living up to our sky-high ideals. Not eventhe “good” ones. “Where in the hell is my prince?” my girl-friend yelled. We all laughed, but then the room fell silent, andsoon the smiles faded. It was a question we’d been asking ourselves since we firstgot that woozy feeling when our favorite boy walked by in gradeschool. And here we were, in our late twenties and thirties, stillwaiting for answers to come trotting in on a beautiful, whitestallion. The Fairy Tale That Started It AllSo, where in the heck did this fascination with the ultimateromance come from anyway? When did we start believing inthe idea of a perfect man who would swoop into our lives andeliminate the negatives? Well, for me it was at the age of fourwhen my great-aunt Vyvian introduced me to a saucy chick bythe name of Cinderella.

Dr. Joe & What You Didn't Know: 99 Fascinating Questions About the Chemistry of Everyday Life - PDF
نویسندگان: Dr. Joe Schwarcz خلاصه: What does being barefoot and pregnant on a cactus have todo with cherry ice cream? You probably think that's a prettybizarre question. But there is method to the madness. For overtwo decades now, I've tried to answer the public's questionsabout everyday chemistry on the radio, I hope with somedegree of success. Then, a few years ago, I had an idea. Whynot spice things up by turning the situation around and askingmy audience questions?Everybody seems to like quiz shows, especially when thereare prizes at stake, so I took to beginning each program with aquestion, offering a prize for the first right answer. We're talkinglocal radio here, not national TV, so the prizes were modest, buwe did manage to come up with some books, gift certificates, restaurant meals, and highly coveted "Dr. Joe" T-shirts. A newadventure was in the offing! I started off with some prettystraightforward questions — like, "Why does ouzo turn whitewhen you add water to it?"; and, "What is emu oil?"; and, "Whydoes lemon juice lighten the color of tea?" All good questions, Ithought, and somewhat challenging.Indeed, for the first few weeks, callers struggled to answermy questions; then suddenly it seemed as though they hadtaken smart pills. They started providing the correct answers7INTRODUCTIONDR. JOE SCHWARCZwith impressive frequency. It didn't take long for me to figureout what was going on. I wasn't testing the audience anymore,I was posing my questions to Google. And Google, as weknow, is pretty smart. As soon as a question passed my lips, those little fingers hit the keyboard. I tried instituting an honorcode, requesting that respondents not run to their computers.Yeah, sure.Obviously, another approach was needed. I attempted tophrase the questions in ways that would confound the searchengines. Like, "What is the connection between tangerine trees, marmalade skies, and morning glory?"; or, "What is the linkbetween Frankenstein and frog legs?" This approach seemed towork, and that's why you'll find a number of unusual-sound-ing questions in this little volume, which is a collection of thequestions I've posed on my radio show over the years. Ofcourse, you'll also find the answers — at least, my version ofthem. The questions come from a number of fields, but all havesome interesting scientific connection. There is no specific orderto the questions, no systematic attempt to educate. What I'vetried to do is demonstrate science's broad scope and show howscientific pursuit links to so many areas of our culture. So,come along for the ride, poke around, read a little here, a littlethere, pick up some bits of knowledge to fling around thedinner table, and have some fun doing it. And if you want toknow what being barefoot and pregnant on a cactus has to dowith cherry ice cream, just turn the page.

نویسندگان: Joyce Carol Oates خلاصه: They’d been drinking since about 10:00 p.m. We saw this guy walk-ing by himself by the railroad track, cutting through a field and onto Route11, it looked kind of weird, suspicious. We didn’t know who it was . . . Well, maybe they could see the boy was dark-skinned. Maybe one of themyelled out Nigger! Those skid marks in the gravel . . . Maybe Leo, whowas driving, aimed the car at the kid just to scare him, to make himrun. After that, things got confused. It had been approximately 12:15 a.m. on April 9, 1973, whenJadro Filer left his girlfriend’s house to walk back to his home, a ten-minute walk under ordinary circumstances, across the railroad em-bankment, along the highway shoulder past darkened gas stations, aTaco Bell, a McDonald’s. It was 12:50 a.m. when an emergency callwas made reporting a badly beaten young man lying in a roadsideditch near a railroad culvert. (No other call was reported that night. But the following morning, when news of the beating began to spreadthrough Perrysburg, an anonymous caller would report to police thathe’d seen what appeared to be a new-model Buick in the vicinity ofthe attack scene, parked off the highway shortly after midnight. Thecaller, slowing, then accelerating to speed past, had an impression offour or five young white men “involved in some activity like fight-ing.” The caller would supply police with the first three digits of a carregistered to Leo Dellamora.) By 12:50 a.m., however, Leo andMario were back home. They’d dropped Walt and Don Brinkhausoff, and come directly to Crescent Avenue. At this time they hadn’tknown, would claim they’d had no idea, that Jadro Filer had beenbeaten so badly he’d never regain consciousness. They were aroused, excited. Maybe a little panicked. I overheard them speaking togetherin low, urgent voices. I heard “nigger” several times repeated. I heardtheir nervous laughter.

Only You (Harlequin Super Romance) - PDF
نویسندگان: Leigh Greenwood, Peg Sutherland خلاصه: only one in town likely to be more trouble than you. " Weddington. Trent barely listened as Officer Monk lectured him about illegal parking and told him that Collins had no place for him. Trent murmured, "Yes sir," and pulled away from the curb while Monk watched in silent satisfaction. But the cogs in Trent's mind whirred noisily, spinning fantasies about Miss Harper Weddington. He'd seen the sign on his way into town, a massive wooden sign over the entrance to a long, winding drive, all of it bordered by an immaculate white picket fence, leading to a house that couldn't be seen from the highway. Weddington Farms, the sign had read. He'd seen the name once again after he passed the town limit sign, this time etched in the massive granite marker directly across from the row of shops along Broad Street. Weddington Textiles. Yes, Miss Harper Weddington, with her candy-apple convertible and half the town named after her, was exactly what Trent was looking for. HARPER KNEW it was half-past dinner when she wheeled to a stop behind the house, spitting gravel and dust on the farmhands gathered by the paddock fence. She had a moment of unease until she remembered she wouldn't be seeing Red Jan-nik. He was gone; her daddy had seen to that. Probably the only thing Sam had ever done that pleased her was running off Red Jannik. She killed the engine, ran her fingers through her tangled curls and stepped out of the car. She paused by the hood, waiting to capture the attention of all her daddy's hired hands. When she had it, she smiled and wiggled the tips of her fingers at them. "Hey, boys!" Some of them called back. Some of them grinned. Some of them, who knew what had happened to Red Jannik and didn't want it happening to them, ignored her. Harper laughed and marched toward the house, letting her hips sway more than was decent. Her smile faded as soon as her back was to them. Her heart wasn't in that particular little game any longer. But she'd been acting as long as she could remember. What was a little more? Just enough to see her through to graduation. Then she was out of here. Collins, South Carolina, could kiss her fanny goodbye; Floretha looked up, shook her head in disapproval but didn't speak when Harper walked through the kitchen. Harper stopped and leaned her hip against the big wooden table and plucked a slice of peeled apple from the bowl Floretha was working over. The tiny woman's dark head was sprinkled with gray, although she wasn't yet forty. "Apple cobbler?" Harper popped the apple into her mouth. "Apple muffins for breakfast." The woman's velvet voice had the hard edge she reserved for new kitchen help and the bad child she'd had a hand in raising. "Which you wouldn't be getting into if you weren't late for supper."

Anything You Can Do... - PDF
نویسندگان: Gordon Randall Garrett خلاصه: He looked at the ball of the yellow-white sun ahead and wondered that such a relatively stable, inactive star could have produced such a tremendously energetic plasmoid, one that could still do such damage so far out. It had been a freak, of course. Such suns as this did not normally produce such energetic swirls of magnetohydrodynamic force. But the thing had been there, nonetheless, and the ship had hit it at high velocity. Fortunately the ship had only touched the edge of the swirling cloud—otherwise the ship would have vanished in a puff of incandescence. But it had done enough. The power plants that drove the ship at ultralight velocities through the depths of interstellar space had been so badly damaged that they could only be used in short bursts, and each burst brought them closer to the fusion point. Even when they were not being used they sang away their energies in ululations of wavering vibration that would have been nerve- racking to a human being. The Nipe had heard the singing of the engines, recognized it for what it was, realized that he could do nothing about it, and dismissed it from his mind. Most of the instruments were powerless; the Nipe was not even sure he could land the vessel. Any attempt to use the communicator to call home would have blown his ship to atoms. The Nipe did not want to die, but, if die he must, he did not want to die foolishly. It had taken a long time to drift in from the outer reaches of this sun's planetary system, but using the power plants any more than was absolutely necessary would have been foolhardy. The Nipe missed the companionship his brother had given him for so long; his help would be invaluable now. But there had been no choice. There had not been enough supplies for two to survive the long inward fall toward the distant sun. The Nipe, having discovered the fact first, had, out of his mercy and compassion, killed his brother while the other was not looking. Then, having disposed of his brother with all due ceremony, he had settled down to the long, lonely wait. Beings of another race might have cursed the accident that had disabled the ship, or regretted the necessity that one of them should die, but the Nipe did neither, for, to him, the first notion would have been foolish and the second incomprehensible. But now, as the ship fell ever closer toward the yellow-white sun, he began to worry about his own fate. For a while, it had seemed almost certain that he would survive long enough to build a communicator, for the instruments had already told him and his brother that the system ahead was inhabited by creatures of reasoning power, if not true intelligence, and it would almost certainly be possible to get the equipment he needed from them. Now, though, it looked as if the ship would not survive a landing. He had had to steer it away from a great gas giant, which had seriously endangered the power plants.

Show Us How You Do It: Marshall Keeble and the Rise of Black Churches of Christ in the United States, 1914-1968 (Religion & American Culture) - PDF
نویسندگان: Edward J. Robinson خلاصه: Marshall Keeble (1878–1968) was the premier evangelist in black Churches of Christ from 1931 until his death in 1968. Born and reared in middle Tennessee, Keeble came under the influence of Preston Taylor, Samuel Womack, and Alexander Campbell, as well as the social influence of Booker T. Washington. In 1914, Keeble committed himself to full-time evangelism and by the 1920s had established himself as a noteworthy preacher. By the time of his death, he reportedly had baptized 40,000 people and had established more than 200 congregations, some of which still flourish today. Show Us How You Do It is the first critical study of Keeble and his evangelical career. Based on primary sources, Edward Robinson reconstructs the life, public ministry, missionary activities, and the reception of Keeble among Churches of Christ. He also explores Keeble’s relationship with white businessmen and how he secured white support in establishing a large fellowship of African American Churches of Christ in the South. Show Us How You Do It details Keeble’s theology, ethos, and polemics toward other churches. Robinson demonstrates Keeble’s legacy in the labor of his African American co-workers and of the students who attended Nashville Christian Institute. Of the approximately 2.5 million members of the Churches of Christ in the U.S., an estimated 10 percent are African-Americans, and many in this fellowship can trace their affiliation to Keeble and to those whom he trained.
