God Bless You, Joe Stalin: The Man Who Saved Capitalism - PDF
God Bless You, Joe Stalin: The Man Who Saved Capitalism - PDF
نویسندگان: Lewis Kaplan خلاصه: This controversial book traces 20th century history and argues that (1) US prosperity is inexorably linked to the U.S. deficit and has been since the New Deal; (2) Any effort to significantly reduce the national debt will result in a depression that will make that of the 1930s seem like good times; (3) that it was the Cold War and the Great Society which made the American and global economy as prosperous as they are today. Stalin has been accused of many things; add to the list his role as the father of modern-day economics and a major factor in inspiring the US to take a bold course in the 20th century. This dramatic narrative traces the evolution of the concept of the Almighty Dollar against the backdrop of the development and denouement of the Cold War, demonstrating how individual decisions made by US and Soviet leaders affected the course of events. This enlightening and controversial book sets forth the thesis that the growing prosperity of the US during the past 60 years is directly linked to deficit spending, and that the synergy of these two phenomena will continue for the foreseeable future. An analysis of the Historical Tables of the United States Government, showing the tandem growth of US deficits and the GDP, is interwoven into the historical recounting. Furthermore, The Almighty Dollar is not in danger of collapse because if the nations of the world don't sustain the integrity of the U.S. dollar as the currency of exchange, their own economies will collapse. Chapter 1. Evolution of the Almighty Dollar; Chapter 2. The Amazing American Economy; Chapter 3. Beyond Good and Evil: A Different Portrait of Joe Stalin; Chapter 4. The Contradictions of State Socialism; Chapter 5. The Cold War Begins: The Truman Presidency; Chapter 6. The Cold War in Neutral: The Eisenhower Presidency; Chapter 7. Expanding the Cold War: The Kennedy Presidency; Chapter 8. The Great Society: The Johnson Presidency; Chapter 9. The Renegade Republican: The Nixon Presidency; Chapter 10. Frustration: The Presidencies of Ford and Carter Chapter 11. America on the Attack: The Reagan Presidency; Chapter 12. The End of the Cold War: The George H. W. Bush Presidency.

Planet Earth: 25 Environmental Projects You Can Build Yourself - PDF
نویسندگان: Kathleen Reilly خلاصه: There were several "early environmentalists," including Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt and Jacques-Yves Cousteau. They were the early pioneers and not always taken seriously, but now there are many people and organizations that are interested in protecting our environment. Young people today realize that "we're woven into the environment just as much as a leaf on a tree or the soil we walk on" and there are many little things we can do to help. In this book you'll learn about the Earth and our place in it, biome facts, Earth's atmosphere, the stratosphere, the sun, plant and animal species on Earth, pollution, global warming, ozone depletion, endangered species, how to recycle and how the environment balances itself. There are projects interspersed in these pages relative to the dialogue. The author does try to impress upon the reader "to be aware of the materials you use" and encourages environmental awareness throughout the text. Among the many projects you can do include: Make Your Own Whole World Granola Make Your Own Tullgren Funnel Make Your Own Wind-Powered Bubble Machine Make Your Own Plant-Oxygen Experiment Make Your Own Giant Air Blaster Make Your Own Water-Testing Experiment Make Your Own Backyard Pond Make Your Own Miniature Water Cycle Make Your Own Terrarium Make Your Own Solar-Powered Oven Make Your Own Pocket Sundial Make Your Own Sunflower House Make Your Own Pond Exploration Kit Make Your Own Mini Food Chain Make Your Own Butterfly Feeder make Your Own Chemical-Free, Insect-Repelling Dog Collar Make Your Own Ladybug Home Make Your Own Garbage Picker-Upper Make Your Own Global Warming in a Jar Propagate Your Own Tree Make Your Own Ozone Hole Magic Trick Make Your Own Hydroponic Planter Make Your Own Endangered Animal T-Shirt Make Your Own Food Supply Experiment Make Your Own Naturally Dyed Shopping Tote Make Your Own Worm Castle Make Your Own Scratch-and-Sniff Recycled Paper Make Your Own Environment Charm Bracelet Make Your Own "Bring the Earth Back Into Balance" Game I've been looking at this book for over a month and marveling at the amazing information packed inside. This book was printed on "100% recycled paper" by a member of the Green Press Initiative and a listing of the resources saved are listed in the front. The inside has no glossy pages and is actually quite dull looking in black and white. BUT, you'll have to travel far and wide to find a more interesting and unique book that not only discusses critical environmental issues, but also provides many hands-on projects for its readers. In the back of the book is a glossary, an index and additional recommended book, periodical, environmental and web site resources for children. Can't go wrong with this book!

نویسندگان: Susan Wise Bauer خلاصه: It was difficult to decide how many stars to give this book; three seemed a bit low, but four definitely seemed too high. The best part of this book is the suggested reading lists, complete with thumbnail descriptions: chronologically ordered lists of some of the most influential novels, autobiographies, histories, dramas, and poetry. I fully intend to use these lists to find future reading material. Less useful, at least to me, was the "instruction" in how to read "serious literature"; I find the suggestion that one cannot perform "logic-stage" and "rhetoric-stage" reading at the same time as "grammar-stage" reading, that one must take physical notes in a journal, and/or mark and dog-ear the pages of the book, in order to have truly read and understood it, to be somewhat patronizing and excessive. Yes, if a book is proving heavy going, these techniques might prove useful, but they are hardly universally essential when reading anything that somebody might consider "literature". Still, I suppose that it was necessary for the author to have something of the sort included, or all she would have had would have been a collection of suggested reading lists, which probably couldn't have been published. There was a lot of useful historical background here, as well, and the book was definitely worth the read. Still, I doubt that I'll be re-reading it any time soon, although I WILL be using the reading lists as reference material.

Being Me, Loving You: A Practical Guide to Extraordinary Relationships - PDF
نویسندگان: Marshall B. Rosenberg PhD خلاصه: After constantly reading and re-reading Non Violent Communication and the workbook, finding tons of valuable information in it and being able to put it into practice, I don't feel this bookLET gave me anything new. First I was unaware this was just a booklet and not a full book , until I got it. It may have declared that in the description but I didn't pay attention! Second, the format of using blurbs from various other participants, seminars and what not makes it very difficult to follow along. I had to stop and was not able to make it all the way through. I jsut had to reread the same passages two and three times just to understand them. That being said I am a college educated, well read individual therefore reading is not a challenge for me, but this booklet was. :-( I had very high expectations for this book after reading NonViolent Communication!
Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating - PDF
Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating - PDF
نویسندگان: Jeffrey M. Smith خلاصه: I usually buy my books at Amazon, but since I was in Borders, I decided to skim through it to see if it was worth buying for a detailed read. By training, I'm an engineer, but I did a stint in biochemical research, so I think I'm on pretty firm ground in reviewing this collection of propaganda and bad science. Here's what you need to know about the entire subject of genetically modified organisms or genetic engineering without reading this annoyingly inaccurate book: We don't know what we don't know. That's it. GMOs and the entire discipline of GE could be an accident waiting to happen. Or it could be that one day... in the future...it could help the world in one way or another, but we just don't have enough information. So at this point everyone is "talking their book." It's like our current (American) political situation. If you're a Democrat anything a Republican says can be summarily dismissed just because they are not Democats...and of course, vice versa...even if what the other person says is fact. So scientists from companies like Monsanto will talk up all the benefits of their research...and how utterly safe and completely tested their products are...and scientists working for groups that are against this ...for monetary or other reasons, will only offer doomsday scenarios. But neither side has any clue. Remember, there was a time when "we" all believed that the Earth was flat, and that the Sun revolved about the Earth...and scientists at that time could prove it. Just before we set off the first nuclear weapon, there were scientists who were concerned that this thing, this nuclear thing, if allowed to be detonated would ignite the atmosphere with catastrophic results. it's not that they were wrong, it's that we got lucky. There just was no way that the bomb was not going to be set off...."too much was at stake"....whatever that means. If you really want to learn about genetic engineering...and you want to teach the entire family about it,in a relatively PG environment, go to your DVD collection, or your friendly online streaming facility and watch Jurassic Park - the original...and pay careful attention to the movie that they watch in the beginning and to Jeff Goldblum's character, Ian Malcolm. The movie has pretty good science - especially the prescient comment by Malcolm that "Nature finds a way." My only concern at this point is that there is an effort afoot (by powerful interests, of course) to stop the labeling of GE products. Like I said, I don't know what I don't know, so I am really not for or against the industry, but I would like to have the opportunity to decide if I want to eat, wash with, wear or be near products that didn't take the evolution route (Geez,I just realized, what if you, dear reader, don't believe in evolution - then we have bigger problems) There is no way to stop "progress." No way. Highways and cars and TVs and computer monitors, microwaves and cellphones all had detractors - all were going to give us brain cancer, poison our foods destroy the atmospher and so on. And there was a group of people who actually got their way for a brief period of time and prevented those of us who enjoy Scotch from having any...for shame... But progress will win out...it's inevitable.. The really hard part about progress, especially that now that we "know everything about everything" is that we don't progress ourselves into oblivion....

Deal with Your Debt: The Right Way to Manage Your Bills and Pay Off What You Owe - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Liz Pulliam Weston خلاصه: Why do colleges cost so much? Large capital spending provide the best facilities, faculty, and sport centers and teams to keep wealth alumni donors happy. Universities hope to boost their national ranking by spending on high-speed internet access, new gyms, concert halls, and better student housing. Faculty salaries are expensive. The median salary for a tenure professor is $76,200. Many colleges are trying to shrink class sizes and reduce class loads so professors can do more research and bring glory to the University. What type of loans are available? A Perkins loan offers a 5% fixed interest rate and a maximum borrowed amount of $20,000. Stanford loan is a variable rate loan capped at 8.25% and a 4% upfront fee. How much should you borrow? None is the correct answer. If you don't have money then don't go to college. Save your money then go to college. If you yield to temptation and accept a loan then your loan payments once you graduate shouldn't exceed 10% of your expected monthly gross. You will have 10 years to repay the student loan. If you earn $40,000 then your payback will be 4,000 a year (10%) or about 340 dollars a month for a $26,000 dollar loan. The average undergraduate loan is about 26k. 50 percent of the student enrolled in college do not graduate and leave the college with heavy student debt. If you graduate making less than 40k the loan repayment amount will be overextended in ratio to earnings. Instead of 10 percent of your wages the loan will represent 15 to 20 percent. The heavier debt loan increases the risk of default.
