TRIZ POWER TOOLS Skill # 1 Resolving Contradictions The Skill that Will Give You the Confidence to Do the Rest - PDF
نویسندگان: Collaborative Authors خلاصه: If you are reading the PDF format—navigate the algorithms with the “Bookmarks” to the left. L1, L2, L3 correspond to levels of the algorithm. The levels are hierarchal; you can go as deeply as required to resolve your problem. Lower levels (L1, L2) have consolidated methods. If you are using the book then use the Table of Contents for the Algorithm) Resolving contradictions is one of the most useful and fundamental aspects of TRIZ because it greatly expands the solution space. It allows us to consider turning many more knobs than we would normally be allowed to turn. Resolving contradictions allows us to improve something without making other features worse. At the heart of most contradictions is a knob that must have two settings. For instance, we talked about a vehicle that needed to have a small volume in order to create low drag and a large volume to carry lots of cargo. This appears to be physically impossible, yet we will try to make this happen. Common Approaches for Dealing with Contradictions There are several approaches to dealing with contradictions: 1) Discount one or both of the conflicting properties. This is a common approach used in theological, political, negotiation or historical settings. . 2) Compromise somewhere between both conflicting properties. This is a standard approach taught in most schools and widely adopted throughout industry for resolving problems of all genre. 3) Deliver both properties to the required degree by resolving the contradiction. This is an unusual approach that can apply to problems of all type. 4) Allow only one of the properties and then compensate by turning another knob. This is also a valid approach which we will call “compensation”. The first approach of discounting one or the other conflicting properties, can be referred to as the ostrich approach or throwing the hand grenade back over the wall. Either we do not face the problem or we force someone else to deal with the problem. In this case we would either deny that the drag existed or we would deny that the volume was too small. As mentioned, this approach is less common in the world of physics, but it can happen in the realm of marketing. For this text, we will not discount either property but rather assume that we are only dealing with situations where the requirement for both properties are valid because we have thoroughly analyzed the situation The second approach is to compromise and make the volume larger but not “too large”. The problem with this thinking is that we now guarantee risk. If we are building the vehicle for public sale, we may find that the cost of operation is too high for some customers and the volume too low for others. In order to perform an artful compromise a lot of data needs to be collected and models built. This can be time consuming. In addition, it is likely that this risky situation that will be perpetuated in future generations. Due to these drawbacks, we will not be applying this approach in this text. The third approach is to resolve the contradiction without compromising. Nobody, including future generations, needs to live with the problem. When we learn how to do this, we will find that there are a lot more knobs that we can consider turning to solve problems. This skill is liberating to problem solvers who find that the solution space is much larger than they supposed.

نویسندگان: Bob Brecher خلاصه: My intention in this book is polemical, but not rhetorical. For while I shall try to persuade readers that the whole idea of a liberal morality is in the end untenable, the very possibility of my doing so rests on a sense of, and a confidence in, a rationality which it is liberalism’s great achievement to have bequeathed us. Thus an underlying theme is that liberalism’s loss of confidence in a universal and impartial rationality, resulting in its transformation into the series of relativisms now described as postmodernism, is misplaced; but that the seeds of this transformation have lain dormant in the liberal tradition. In particular, it is liberalism’s difficulties in justifying morality which are central to that transfor mation and which show why, its achievements notwithstanding, liberal morality is in the end conceptually inadequate to the point of being corrosive. My argument is simply that liberal morality is unsustainable because it cannot offer a rationally adequate account either of morality as a fact of everyday life or of any possible justification of moral principles and moral demands. I hope to lay the ground, in the longer run, for the possibility of a thoroughly rationalistic account and justification of morality; to refute both amoralists who reject the claims of morality upon them and (philosophical) sceptics who, however they may actually behave, reject the possibility of any rational justification of (even their own) moral actions and judgements. In rejecting liberal morality and liberal theories of morality, then, I am emphatically not rejecting the liberal conception of rationality. In particular, I share the aspirations of classical no less than later nineteenth- and earlier twentieth-century liberals to a universal and impartial rationality—even if imperfectly realized, in that tradition as elsewhere, and even if too often limited to questions of means rather than extending also to ends

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?: The Nine Inner Strengths You Need to Overcome Self-Defeating Tendencies at Work - PDF
نویسندگان: Charles E. Watson خلاصه: A management professor and a religion professor team up to provide a fresh, penetrating look at the obstacles that prevent people from achieving their full potential. As authors Charles Watson and Thomas Idinopulos demonstrate, inner demons like a lack of integrity, mindless conformity, passivity, or greed conspire to keep people from doing their best. But people can avoid becoming their own worst enemies by using their uniquely human capacities to their fullest—to be more responsible, more creative, more self-disciplined, and more honest. Using these strengths, the authors show, makes it easier to resolve ethical dilemmas, attain peak performance without burning out, maintain a positive outlook, and, ultimately, succeed in achieving treasured personal and professional goals. A management professor and a religion professor team up to provide a fresh, penetrating look at the obstacles that prevent people from achieving their full potential at work. As Watson and Idinopulos demonstrate, inner demons like a lack of integrity, mindless conformity, passivity, mediocrity, or greed conspire to keep people from doing their best. But people can avoid becoming their own worst enemies by using their uniquely human capacities to their fullest: to be more responsible, more insightful, more creative, more self-disciplined, more honest, and more concerned about others. Using these strengths, the authors show, makes it easier to resolve ethical dilemmas, attain peak performance without burning out, maintain a positive outlook, and, ultimately, succeed in achieving treasured personal and professional goals. The world of work is filled with treacherous shoals that constantly test the integrity, fortitude, and tolerance of employees. The stresses can be incapacitating. Faced with competing agendas, high expectations, sclerotic bureaucracies, and scarce resources, many people fall prey to demons that sap their energy or, worse, encourage them to act against their own interests by being dishonest or cutting corners. Are You Your Own Worst Enemy? shows readers how to take responsibility for their actions and their happiness. It discusses the on-going pressures, temptations, and traps in the workplace and how ordinary people can manage them constructively to remain effective and true to their ideals. Specifically, it shows how learning the following behaviors and attitudes can help people become more productive, more valuable, and more fully satisfied: -Develop the capacity to make things happen. -Make the most of who you are. -Sharpen thinking skills. -Be the kind of person others want to be around. -Break the chains of mindless routine. -Become an effective learner and continue learning. -Master the art of self-discipline. -Act with integrity. -Be of service to others. Using dozens of engaging stories from people in all types of organizations, the authors show how to overcome self-defeating behavior. The result for readers is a blueprint for success, reduced stress, better work/life balance, and fulfillment.

نویسندگان: Christina Dodd خلاصه: They would never tell Mr. Remington Knight the truth. Eleanor’s heart sank as Mr. Remington Knight’s stern-faced butler made the announcement into the large, echoing foyer. “Her Grace, the duchess of Magnus.” To hear herself presented in such a formal manner made her want to glance about for her cousin. If only Madeline were here! If only she hadn’t turned aside from this mission for a more important task! If only Eleanor hadn’t agreed to impersonate her. At the far end of the room, a liveried footman bowed, then disappeared into an open doorway. He was gone only a moment, then returned and inclined his head to the butler. The butler turned to Eleanor and intoned, “The master is busy, but he will receive you soon. In the meantime, ma’am, I’m Bridgeport. May I take your cloak and bonnet?” Although noon had passed, the mists outside subdued the sunlight into a wash of gray. The light of the candles couldn’t illuminate the dark corners of Mr. Knight’s enormous entry, an entry built to communicate, in the surest way possible, the owner’s wealth. Eleanor’s nostrils quivered with scorn. Bridgeport jumped a little, as if anticipating her ripping at him as a substitute for his master. Of course Mr. Knight would take this house; he wanted everyone to know he was rolling in riches. He was, after all, nothing more than an upstart American who dreamed of marrying a title. Yet the entry was decorated with velvet draperies of evergreen and gold, and with a profusion of cut glass and beveled mirrors in marvelous good taste. Eleanor comforted herself with the thought that Mr. Knight had bought it in this condition and was even now planning to gut it and install gilt in the Chinese fashion, a style fully as vulgar as—Eleanor’s mouth quirked with humor—as vulgar as was adored by the Prince of Wales himself. Bridgeport relaxed and returned to his stolid demeanor. Generated by ABC Amber LIT Converter,

Bringing out the best in everyone you coach: use the enneagram system for exceptional results - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Ph.D., Ginger Lapid-Bogda خلاصه: Organizational coaching is a premier personal and professional development method in which the coach guides another individual toward the achieve- ment of specific goals. In fact, coaching has become the fastest-growing human resource profession over the past two decades. A variety of people function as coaches—for example, managers, mentors, and “professional” coaches, such as certified coaches, human resource personnel, trainers, psy- chologists, and organizational consultants. With the proliferation of coaches worldwide, it is especially important that individuals who coach others un- derstand what coaching is, how it works, and how to ensure that it actually produces results. The following story briefly illustrates both the potential challenges and dramatic benefits of coaching. Louise had asked for executive coaching. However, each time she met with her coach, Maurice, she would either arrive late or leave early, and she frequently canceled her appointments altogether. Frustrated, Maurice devel- oped a six-page document that compared Louise’s coaching goals with infor- mation he had learned thus far about Louise’s behavior. The data came from several sources: Louise herself; interviews with Louise’s manager, peers, and subordinates; and Maurice’s own observations. While Maurice had devel- oped this document as a coaching tool for his own use, Louise desperately wanted to see it. After convincing Maurice to give her the document, Louise proceeded to defend her behavior and to argue over even the smallest details. Just one month later, however, Louise’s manager and coworkers were stop- ping Maurice in the hallway to remark about the dramatic changes in Louise’s behavior. All wanted to know not only how he had done it, but also how he had helped her change so dramatically in such a short period of time. As this story suggests, it can be difficult to determine what really causes changes in someone’s behavior or whether coaching actually achieves long- lasting results. At the same time, coaching has become the most effective method for increasing an individual’s personal, interpersonal, and organiza- tional effectiveness. Because coaching usually takes place as a one-to-one interaction between a coach and a client, it is a unique and highly individual- ized developmental experience.
