Anything You Can Do... - PDF
نویسندگان: Gordon Randall Garrett خلاصه: He looked at the ball of the yellow-white sun ahead and wondered that such a relatively stable, inactive star could have produced such a tremendously energetic plasmoid, one that could still do such damage so far out. It had been a freak, of course. Such suns as this did not normally produce such energetic swirls of magnetohydrodynamic force. But the thing had been there, nonetheless, and the ship had hit it at high velocity. Fortunately the ship had only touched the edge of the swirling cloud—otherwise the ship would have vanished in a puff of incandescence. But it had done enough. The power plants that drove the ship at ultralight velocities through the depths of interstellar space had been so badly damaged that they could only be used in short bursts, and each burst brought them closer to the fusion point. Even when they were not being used they sang away their energies in ululations of wavering vibration that would have been nerve- racking to a human being. The Nipe had heard the singing of the engines, recognized it for what it was, realized that he could do nothing about it, and dismissed it from his mind. Most of the instruments were powerless; the Nipe was not even sure he could land the vessel. Any attempt to use the communicator to call home would have blown his ship to atoms. The Nipe did not want to die, but, if die he must, he did not want to die foolishly. It had taken a long time to drift in from the outer reaches of this sun's planetary system, but using the power plants any more than was absolutely necessary would have been foolhardy. The Nipe missed the companionship his brother had given him for so long; his help would be invaluable now. But there had been no choice. There had not been enough supplies for two to survive the long inward fall toward the distant sun. The Nipe, having discovered the fact first, had, out of his mercy and compassion, killed his brother while the other was not looking. Then, having disposed of his brother with all due ceremony, he had settled down to the long, lonely wait. Beings of another race might have cursed the accident that had disabled the ship, or regretted the necessity that one of them should die, but the Nipe did neither, for, to him, the first notion would have been foolish and the second incomprehensible. But now, as the ship fell ever closer toward the yellow-white sun, he began to worry about his own fate. For a while, it had seemed almost certain that he would survive long enough to build a communicator, for the instruments had already told him and his brother that the system ahead was inhabited by creatures of reasoning power, if not true intelligence, and it would almost certainly be possible to get the equipment he needed from them. Now, though, it looked as if the ship would not survive a landing. He had had to steer it away from a great gas giant, which had seriously endangered the power plants.

It's True! You Eat Poison Every Day - PDF
نویسندگان: Peter Macinnis خلاصه: hat’s not all. There are poisons in the fruitbowl and the pantry. You could die of coffee poisoning, salt poisoning or potato poisoning. Why don’t you? Because you don’t eat or drink enough of them. We know that 100 cups of coffee, 250 grams (9 ounces) of salt or 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of potatoes will kill an adult if taken all at once. There’s cyanide in apple pips – not a lot, but enough to give pips a bitter taste. Enough to kill a really determined apple-pip chomper. Even the oxygen we need to breathe can be lethal – pure oxygen, that is. If you breathe pure oxygen, your Vitamins, anyone? Australian explorer Douglas Mawson led an expedition to the Antarctic. He and two companions, Belgrave Ninnis and Xavier Mertz, were struggling back to base camp when Ninnis fell into a deep crevasse. With him went the sledge containing most of the food. Mawson and Mertz soon had nothing left to eat but their husky dogs. The meat was stringy, so they ate the soft livers, which were easier to chew. They became very ill – dizzy, nauseous and irritable. Strips of their skin and hair peeled away, and so did the soles of Mawson’s feet. Mertz died before they got back to base, and Mawson nearly did. We now know that the dogs’ livers contained large amounts of Vitamin A – far too much for a human to eat safely. Mawson learned the hard way that we all need a small amount of Vitamin A, but too much will kill us.

TRIZ POWER TOOLS Skill # 1 Resolving Contradictions The Skill that Will Give You the Confidence to Do the Rest - PDF
نویسندگان: Collaborative Authors خلاصه: If you are reading the PDF format—navigate the algorithms with the “Bookmarks” to the left. L1, L2, L3 correspond to levels of the algorithm. The levels are hierarchal; you can go as deeply as required to resolve your problem. Lower levels (L1, L2) have consolidated methods. If you are using the book then use the Table of Contents for the Algorithm) Resolving contradictions is one of the most useful and fundamental aspects of TRIZ because it greatly expands the solution space. It allows us to consider turning many more knobs than we would normally be allowed to turn. Resolving contradictions allows us to improve something without making other features worse. At the heart of most contradictions is a knob that must have two settings. For instance, we talked about a vehicle that needed to have a small volume in order to create low drag and a large volume to carry lots of cargo. This appears to be physically impossible, yet we will try to make this happen. Common Approaches for Dealing with Contradictions There are several approaches to dealing with contradictions: 1) Discount one or both of the conflicting properties. This is a common approach used in theological, political, negotiation or historical settings. . 2) Compromise somewhere between both conflicting properties. This is a standard approach taught in most schools and widely adopted throughout industry for resolving problems of all genre. 3) Deliver both properties to the required degree by resolving the contradiction. This is an unusual approach that can apply to problems of all type. 4) Allow only one of the properties and then compensate by turning another knob. This is also a valid approach which we will call “compensation”. The first approach of discounting one or the other conflicting properties, can be referred to as the ostrich approach or throwing the hand grenade back over the wall. Either we do not face the problem or we force someone else to deal with the problem. In this case we would either deny that the drag existed or we would deny that the volume was too small. As mentioned, this approach is less common in the world of physics, but it can happen in the realm of marketing. For this text, we will not discount either property but rather assume that we are only dealing with situations where the requirement for both properties are valid because we have thoroughly analyzed the situation The second approach is to compromise and make the volume larger but not “too large”. The problem with this thinking is that we now guarantee risk. If we are building the vehicle for public sale, we may find that the cost of operation is too high for some customers and the volume too low for others. In order to perform an artful compromise a lot of data needs to be collected and models built. This can be time consuming. In addition, it is likely that this risky situation that will be perpetuated in future generations. Due to these drawbacks, we will not be applying this approach in this text. The third approach is to resolve the contradiction without compromising. Nobody, including future generations, needs to live with the problem. When we learn how to do this, we will find that there are a lot more knobs that we can consider turning to solve problems. This skill is liberating to problem solvers who find that the solution space is much larger than they supposed.

نویسندگان: Bob Brecher خلاصه: My intention in this book is polemical, but not rhetorical. For while I shall try to persuade readers that the whole idea of a liberal morality is in the end untenable, the very possibility of my doing so rests on a sense of, and a confidence in, a rationality which it is liberalism’s great achievement to have bequeathed us. Thus an underlying theme is that liberalism’s loss of confidence in a universal and impartial rationality, resulting in its transformation into the series of relativisms now described as postmodernism, is misplaced; but that the seeds of this transformation have lain dormant in the liberal tradition. In particular, it is liberalism’s difficulties in justifying morality which are central to that transfor mation and which show why, its achievements notwithstanding, liberal morality is in the end conceptually inadequate to the point of being corrosive. My argument is simply that liberal morality is unsustainable because it cannot offer a rationally adequate account either of morality as a fact of everyday life or of any possible justification of moral principles and moral demands. I hope to lay the ground, in the longer run, for the possibility of a thoroughly rationalistic account and justification of morality; to refute both amoralists who reject the claims of morality upon them and (philosophical) sceptics who, however they may actually behave, reject the possibility of any rational justification of (even their own) moral actions and judgements. In rejecting liberal morality and liberal theories of morality, then, I am emphatically not rejecting the liberal conception of rationality. In particular, I share the aspirations of classical no less than later nineteenth- and earlier twentieth-century liberals to a universal and impartial rationality—even if imperfectly realized, in that tradition as elsewhere, and even if too often limited to questions of means rather than extending also to ends
