It is an almost child-likefeeling of wonder. Once you have experienced it you will notforget that feeling - it can be as exciting as looking into amicroscope for the first time and seeing things that have alwaysbeen around you that you have been unable to see before. When deciding how to organize The Joy Of Mathematics, at firstcertain divisions immediately came to mind-for example, mathematics and nature, mathematics and science, mathematicsand art, and so forth. Surveys started with a modest set of ques-tions in 1998, growing to the national scientific survey conductedwith partner Zogby International, and continuing with state-of-the-artdescriptive empirical studies, scientific conference presentations, andpublications in peer-reviewed academic journals. Interviews beganxiiThe Bully at Workwhen we offered toll-free advice starting in 1998. Financial compli-cations from the practice compelled its termination, but we learnedmuch of what we know from those who shared their suffering. The Namies educate the public. نویسندگان: Mims Cushing, Norman Latov خلاصه: When I was in school, back in the 1950s, from third grade throughtwelfth, everyone was required to take athletics, Monday throughFriday. How I loved getting out of sports. Mother wouldn’t give me a“Sports Excuse” very often, so I had to run in field hockey, lacrosse, basket-ball. In winter, we had the dreaded running races in the gym. But I did like towalk. My Mom and I went into New York City from Larchmont on weekendsand traipsed up and down Madison or Fifth Avenues at a breakneck pace. Ididn’t have neuropathy. Yet.Feet to Brain: Are You There? When we moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, in 1991, I enjoyed walking toLakeside, a community near mine; however, in 1996, people passed me byand soon were far ahead. My 30-minute walk took 40 minutes. Friendswanted me to go faster, but my feet didn’t like the idea. My legs were losingstrength, a common problem with neuropathy. My feet were tingling, burn-ing, and numb—especially at night. I felt stabbing, shooting pains. Ding.Ding. Ding. Bells and whistles should have sounded an alarm, but they did-n’t. In the 1990s, few people knew about peripheral neuropathy, myselfincluded. A huge number still haven’t a clue about it, even though 20 millionpeople in the United States have peripheral neuropathy. And the numbersare growing. In 1996, I went to an internist because the symptoms made me crabby. Shesaid, “You may have peripheral neuropathy. See a neurologist.” Her quick diag-nosis was unusual. Not so long ago, some patients weren’t diagnosed for along time. Thirty-four years is the longest I’ve heard of.

How to Study: Discover How Your Personal Learning Style Can Help You Succeed - PDF
نویسندگان: Gail Wood خلاصه: GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH STUDYINGThis book asks a lot of questions to help you learn how to studyeffectively. But there are no “right” or “wrong” answers here. Every questionis designed to help you discover how you learn, and to help you do more ofwhat works for you—whether you’re reading a text, listening to a lecture, writing a paper, or preparing for a test. For example, in order to understand what you’re reading right now,you are doing something that works for you. Maybe you’re reading thisout loud. Or “hearing” your voice in your head as you read this silently.Perhaps you are making pictures on paper. Maybe you’re reading this asyou’re walking. You might be reading all this in an orderly way, making akind of outline in your head as you go along. Each of these ways is a different learning style. And the early chap-ters in this book focus on helping you find your own learning style. Laterchapters help you work with your learning style so you can use it moreoften. The icons shown to the left stand for the five learning styles you’llfind out about in this book. Once you’ve identified your learning style inChapter 2, “Discovering How You Learn,” you can look in the later chap-ters for the icon that stands for your style to find study tips that will helpyou take advantage of your strength. You’re more comfortable when you’re using your own style becauseyou’re understanding more. And when you’re comfortable, you’re morereceptive—you find it easier to get involved with what you’re studying, asyou’ll see in Chapter 9, “Getting Involved in Learning.” When you’reinvolved with what you’re studying, it doesn’t feel like work; it becomessomething you enjoy.Getting satisfaction from what you’re studying requires carefulplanning. Dividing big jobs into little ones makes overwhelming tasksmore bearable. There’s a chapter in this book on that, too. Sometimespeople can’t pay close attention to their studying because something elseneeds to be done. Spending a few minutes on that other job before studyingwill ease the conscience—thus making studying more productive. Also, some people work best if they work on several things at once.Maybe you’ve heard, “Can’t you just do one thing at a time?” Well, for youperhaps the answer is, “No, I can’t. I work best if I go back and forthbetween two or three projects. If I try to stick to one job at a time, I getdistracted and don’t work well.” Many people work best this way

Conquering Stroke: How I Fought My Way Back and How You Can Too - PDF
نویسندگان: Valerie Greene خلاصه: T WELVE YEARS AGO, at age thirty-one, I was riding high. Ihad a successful career, a fancy car, a posh address, a closetfull of designer-label clothes, and more friends than I couldname. Then without any warning, it all fell apart when in June1996 I suffered a catastrophic stroke. It was one of the worstkinds, caused by a large blood clot that blocked my basal artery, where all routes to the brain merge into one. You don’t hear toomuch about this form of stroke, as nine out of ten victims dieimmediately. Although I was one of the lucky few, it left me halfp aralyzed, deaf in one ear, and unable to speak or even swal-low. The doctors told me I would probably never walk again.Like most patients in the aftermath of a massive stroke, Isank into a deep abyss. When three psychiatrists came into myroom and tried to encourage me to accept my limitations, itfelt like a death sentence. But instead of succumbing to it,something deep within me resisted. That moment ignited aspark that grew in strength during the weeks that followed, firing up my determination to begin the fight of my life. I justdidn’t know how to begin. My thinking was disoriented and Icouldn’t express myself verbally or in writing.

When Someone You Love Is Bipolar: Help and Support for You and Your Partner - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Cynthia G. Last PhD خلاصه: 1IntroductionKevin describes Ashley’s life as like a roller coaster ride. Some-times she’s really “up” and excited— bursting with energy, filledwith enthusiasm, and feeling like she’s on top of the world.Other times it’s the exact opposite: her mood is way down, she’s lethargic, and she’s negative about everything, includingbeing certain her misery never will end. When Ashley’s feeling good she acts impulsively—speeds, goes on spending sprees, drinks too much—and doesn’t think ofthe potential negative consequences of her actions. Kevin hastried to caution her when she’s like this, but Ashley gets angryand accuses him of being “a stick in the mud.” So during theseperiods he’s learned it’s best to keep silent but stay “on alert,”like a firefighter waiting for the next emergency call. When Ashley’s depressed there are problems too. She hastrouble at her job— missing days, not getting her work done, and isolating herself from her coworkers by keeping her officedoor shut. She worries about losing her job, and though Kevintries to reassure her, the truth is he’s worried too. Could theymanage without his wife’s income? Would she be okay if shewere home all day instead of away and occupied, or would sheget even more depressed?
