The Body in Action: You Can Keep Your Joints Young - PDF
نویسندگان: Sarah Key خلاصه: The other day I was driving at dawn along one of Sydney’s forest-fringed outer highways. It was one of those leafy dappled mornings ofhigh summer with the occasional shaft of sunlight bursting throughthe greenery and making explosions of light wherever it landed. In themiddle, cleaving its way through the foliage, ran my highway; a duskyblue thread of bitumen blending and becoming as one with thewaking forest. As I rounded a corner I came upon a cyclist meander-ing at ease across the nearside lane of the roadway. I hung back tolook because his actions had a compelling quality of beauty to them;a languid mark of excellence that made me want to stay and watchrather than speed on past. I kept my distance, watching transfixed ashe acted out in front of me a perfect virtuoso performance of coordi-nated movement.

My Son Fred- Living With Autism: How Could You Manage? I Couldn't, I Did It Anyway - PDF
نویسندگان: Maud Deckmar خلاصه: Can you remember that sense of longing? The time was filled with longing. I put my hand over myenormous belly, the protecting cover for our beloved child. No othercouple had ever been more in love than we and no child had ever beenconceived from a greater love than ours. This child, growing inside me,would feel our endless love and his or her life would be permeatedwith joy and togetherness. How we waited for this child. The Mosesbasket was draped in a floral fabric and I had put out all the clotheswhich I had sewn and knitted. I put out the tiny cap, then the jacket, sleep suit and, finally, the baby socks. Now, all it took was the baby tofill all these warm and soft baby clothes. Our baby, our prince orprincess, who, with our help and the help of Love, would one daybreak boundaries and make the world a better place to live in.What image does the word longing give? Are there pictures oflonging? Is an image of that word at all possible? You long for thisspecial day to come, you know it will happen and the anticipationgives your eyes a gleam and your body fills with giddy, happy sensa-tions. Soon, you keep on thinking, soon…

If You're Not First, You're Last: Sales Strategies to Dominate Your Market and Beat Your Competition - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Grant Cardone خلاصه: The Importance of FirstAlthough the concept of first or last may sound unfair anddifficult to accept for some, in the real world—regardlessof your business or career—first place is the only place thatmatters. It’s a position that allows you to weather all storms, gets you extra attention, and has the competition chasingyou—rather than the other way around. But let’s face it: ifyou didn’t compromise on any point, you would certainlyrather the position of first than any other, right? Given thechoice between first and any other position, we all knowwhat’s preferable.Unlike systems or cultures where everyone getsrewarded for just participating and regardless of theirefforts, abilities, or even the score—the only positionthat ultimately makes sense in business—and the onethat earns the greatest rewards—is, of course, first. If youaren’t in the dominant position in your market, then youare at risk. When economies are abound with business, thecompany in first position continues to gain customers andexpand its size and presence while the weaker players ekeout increasingly smaller gains, helped along solely by thevi INTRODUCTIONrich nature of the market. However, when these profitabletimes wane, the dominant company benefits from its first-place position and grabs market share away from all theother contenders while those in every other position paythe price.Merriam-Webster’s defines the word first as “pre-ceding all others in time, order, or importance.” Beingfirst to the market is not as important as being numberone in your category; you don’t necessarily have to bethe company introducing a product to be the best choicein the buyer’s mind. Order and importance are muchmore vital here than time. There is also a big differencebetween being first and third in Google search results, asevidenced by companies like first-place Intel and second-place Advanced Micro. As of December 2009, Intel hadearned $32.7 billion in revenue and had $13 billion incash, whereas Advanced Micro had $4.92 billion in rev-enues and $2.5 billion in cash. And consider the competi-tion between Barack Obama and John McCain. Only afew points separated a name that has made history. Again,Barack was not first to the market; he actually came 30years after his opponent and had much less experience.Yet he managed to win not just the number one spot, butthe most powerful position in the world. So quit compromising and being “reasonable.” Let’sget you fighting—every minute of every day—for thenumber one spot in your business. You want to be on topwhen the market is great and take market share when itis not.

نویسندگان: Brenda Della Casa خلاصه: ecently my girlfriends and I uncorked severalbottles of wine, sat back, and shared our deepest secrets, best advice, and most candid opinions about men, love, dating, and relationships. We werehaving quite the little pity-party when itoccurred to me that we were all complaining about the samething: no man was living up to our sky-high ideals. Not eventhe “good” ones. “Where in the hell is my prince?” my girl-friend yelled. We all laughed, but then the room fell silent, andsoon the smiles faded. It was a question we’d been asking ourselves since we firstgot that woozy feeling when our favorite boy walked by in gradeschool. And here we were, in our late twenties and thirties, stillwaiting for answers to come trotting in on a beautiful, whitestallion. The Fairy Tale That Started It AllSo, where in the heck did this fascination with the ultimateromance come from anyway? When did we start believing inthe idea of a perfect man who would swoop into our lives andeliminate the negatives? Well, for me it was at the age of fourwhen my great-aunt Vyvian introduced me to a saucy chick bythe name of Cinderella.

Building Organizational Memories: Will You Know What You Knew? (Premier Reference Source) - Original PDF
نویسندگان: John P. Girard خلاصه: Much has been written about how organizations create and exchange knowledge to achieve a competitiveadvantage. To date most researchers have concentrated on the present and how organizational leadersmay use knowledge to create value today. This book builds on the many great works in the knowledgemanagement domain; however, it is unique in that the focus will be on what leaders should be doingnow (or soon) to ensure the next generation of organizational leaders know what they knew. The following is a real-world example of why this area of research is important; there are many morereasons articulated in the pages ahead. During an interview on CBS News on September 11, 2006, NewYork Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief John Norman described the unfathomable loss of life of theDepartment’s Special Operations Command five years earlier. On that tragic day, September 11, 2001,Special Operations Command lost 95 men – totaling 1600 years of experience. This is simply unimagi-nable when one considers this specialized unit pioneered techniques for urban rescue and terrorist at-tacks. Surely, it would be impossible to reconstitute the unique and vital knowledge of these brave men.Au contraire, Norman’s team proved that they had plans in place to quickly rebuild their team and onceagain become the best in world. Five years later the knowledge loss was virtually unnoticeable as theteam responded to 50 calls (Pitts, 2006).This story is not meant to demean the heartbreaking loss of very brave men, but rather it is to com-memorate the outstanding leadership, courage, and culture of a team that would not give up. Fortunately, most organizations do not have to suffer the tragic loss that Norman described, but perhaps we can learnfrom their tragedy. Virtually all organizations must deal with organizational memory loss to varyingdegrees. Could your organization rebuild from such devastation?Regrettably, organizational memory loss is not new, consider:One horrible day 1,600 years ago, the wisdom of many centuries went up in flames. The great libraryin Alexandria burned down, a catastrophe at the time and a symbol for all ages of the vulnerability ofhuman knowledge. The tragedy forced scholars to grope to reconstruct a grand literature and sciencethat once lay neatly cataloged in scrolls. (E. Linden, 1991)The message is clear; organizations must develop a strategy to maintain the intellectual capital thatmakes them unique. To be sure, most organizations cannot capture all of their tacit and explicit knowl-edge; however, that is not necessary and perhaps not even desirable. Rather organizational leaders mustput in place the tools and techniques to ensure that mission critical knowledge is maintained for thenext generation

نویسندگان: Valerie Greene خلاصه: T WELVE YEARS AGO, at age thirty-one, I was riding high. Ihad a successful career, a fancy car, a posh address, a closetfull of designer-label clothes, and more friends than I couldname. Then without any warning, it all fell apart when in June1996 I suffered a catastrophic stroke. It was one of the worstkinds, caused by a large blood clot that blocked my basal artery, where all routes to the brain merge into one. You don’t hear toomuch about this form of stroke, as nine out of ten victims dieimmediately. Although I was one of the lucky few, it left me halfp aralyzed, deaf in one ear, and unable to speak or even swal-low. The doctors told me I would probably never walk again.Like most patients in the aftermath of a massive stroke, Isank into a deep abyss. When three psychiatrists came into myroom and tried to encourage me to accept my limitations, itfelt like a death sentence. But instead of succumbing to it,something deep within me resisted. That moment ignited aspark that grew in strength during the weeks that followed, firing up my determination to begin the fight of my life. I justdidn’t know how to begin. My thinking was disoriented and Icouldn’t express myself verbally or in writing.

Don we now our gay apparel… which just sohappens to have been made for us by the little elves at Givenchy or YSL or Oscar de la Renta. Who arewe , you ask? The residents of Manhattan’s Golden Mile, of course—that glorious stretch of doormanbuildings above Fifty-ninth Street and below Eighty-sixth. It’s Christmastime, time to deck our sprawlingUpper East Side penthouses with silver and gold baubles, twinkly lights, velvet bows, and chocolatesimported from belle Paris. Here the holidays are always a little more sparkly, a little brighter, a littlebetter. It’s so, so good to be back. While I’m not about to tell you where I’ve been for the past few months, I will tell you that thereis lifeafter high school. Yes, it finally happened: We went to college. During the past semester we encounteredpeople who haven’t seen us naked (yet), and who don’t know our SAT scores; who don’t rememberthat time we wet our pants in kindergarten, or when we got our ears pierced. We’ve learned a few newthings, made a few new friends, and have even maybe met the loves our lives. We’vechanged—hopefully for the better. And we’re just as fabulous as always.TakeB , for instance. She’s spending a perfect holiday with her perfect Yale boyfriend and his perfectfamily at their idyllic Vermont compound. That girl always had her eye on the prize. Speaking of prizes, what’sS up to these days? No longer hounded by overeager, fashion-conscious Constance Billard girls, she’s now trailed by the paparazzi and a posse of wannabe movie starlets while she cools herLouboutins, waiting for her nomination for the SAG Awards. No matter where she is or what she does,Swill always be one to watch. Then there are those who’ve tried their darnedest to change:N has been sailing around the world for thelast four months. But as we learned from Kant in our freshman seminars, no man is an island. He’ll beback—sooner rather than later, we hope. Then there’sD , scratching out existential poetry in his blackMoleskine notebook in the Pacific Northwest. It may look like a total lifestyle change, but he still insistson Folgers crystals instead of French press in the coffee capital of the U.S. He also spends every wakingmoment Skyping his shaven-headed, ultra-independent filmmaker girlfriend,V , who’s at NYU andseems to almost have…hair . And friends?! And finally there’sC , last seen with a pack offlannel-wearing, log-lifting, very rugged boys out in Nevada or Montana or someplace with no cities andlots of cattle. Is he into a new type, or has he gone through yet another reinvention? That man putsMadonna to shame

Dr. Joe & What You Didn't Know: 99 Fascinating Questions About the Chemistry of Everyday Life - PDF
نویسندگان: Dr. Joe Schwarcz خلاصه: What does being barefoot and pregnant on a cactus have todo with cherry ice cream? You probably think that's a prettybizarre question. But there is method to the madness. For overtwo decades now, I've tried to answer the public's questionsabout everyday chemistry on the radio, I hope with somedegree of success. Then, a few years ago, I had an idea. Whynot spice things up by turning the situation around and askingmy audience questions?Everybody seems to like quiz shows, especially when thereare prizes at stake, so I took to beginning each program with aquestion, offering a prize for the first right answer. We're talkinglocal radio here, not national TV, so the prizes were modest, buwe did manage to come up with some books, gift certificates, restaurant meals, and highly coveted "Dr. Joe" T-shirts. A newadventure was in the offing! I started off with some prettystraightforward questions — like, "Why does ouzo turn whitewhen you add water to it?"; and, "What is emu oil?"; and, "Whydoes lemon juice lighten the color of tea?" All good questions, Ithought, and somewhat challenging.Indeed, for the first few weeks, callers struggled to answermy questions; then suddenly it seemed as though they hadtaken smart pills. They started providing the correct answers7INTRODUCTIONDR. JOE SCHWARCZwith impressive frequency. It didn't take long for me to figureout what was going on. I wasn't testing the audience anymore,I was posing my questions to Google. And Google, as weknow, is pretty smart. As soon as a question passed my lips, those little fingers hit the keyboard. I tried instituting an honorcode, requesting that respondents not run to their computers.Yeah, sure.Obviously, another approach was needed. I attempted tophrase the questions in ways that would confound the searchengines. Like, "What is the connection between tangerine trees, marmalade skies, and morning glory?"; or, "What is the linkbetween Frankenstein and frog legs?" This approach seemed towork, and that's why you'll find a number of unusual-sound-ing questions in this little volume, which is a collection of thequestions I've posed on my radio show over the years. Ofcourse, you'll also find the answers — at least, my version ofthem. The questions come from a number of fields, but all havesome interesting scientific connection. There is no specific orderto the questions, no systematic attempt to educate. What I'vetried to do is demonstrate science's broad scope and show howscientific pursuit links to so many areas of our culture. So,come along for the ride, poke around, read a little here, a littlethere, pick up some bits of knowledge to fling around thedinner table, and have some fun doing it. And if you want toknow what being barefoot and pregnant on a cactus has to dowith cherry ice cream, just turn the page.
