You Can't Fight Tanks with Bayonets: Psychological Warfare against the Japanese Army in the Southwest Pacific (Studies in War, Society, and the Militar) - PDF
نویسندگان: Allison B. Gilmore خلاصه: In November 1944, during a lull in the intense fighting so characteristic of the Pacific War, a Japanese sol-dier made the following entry in his diary: ‘’I won’t go so far as to say it is absolutely impossible but I don’tthink we can win the war with Japanese spirit alone.” 1 Although the average GI would have found these wordsof little interest or importance, they were immensely heartening to Allied propagandists charged with the taskof inducing demoralization among enemy combatants. For this seemingly insignificant diary entry and manyothers akin to it provided evidence that soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA ) were losing confidencein their ability to win the “Greater East Asia War” and recognizing the vital importance played by materialfactors in wartime. Similar statements proffered by Japanese prisoners of war (POWS ) and found in documentsretrieved from battlefields throughout the Pacific were important sources of intelligence for psychologicalwarfare personnel, whose job it was to hasten Japan’s defeat by waging a propaganda campaign to diminishJapanese confidence in their ability to achieve victory.Historians have written hundreds of volumes about World War II. Many of them analyze various aspects ofthe Pacific War, and some examine the subject of psychological warfare (psywar), but rarely do these twolines of scholarly inquiry intersect. The bulk of the studies of psychological operations in World War II per-tain to the European Theater of Operations (ETO). John W. Dower’s War without Mercy: Race and Power inthe Pacific War assesses the impact of racial hatred, cultural stereotypes, and psychological factors on theconduct of the Pacific War. Yet his treatment of wartime atrocities, Japanese adherence to “death before disho-nor,” and Americans “obsessed with the task of slaughter” reveals only part of the story. 2 Although he refersto the surrender of demoralized Japanese soldiers, the subject is peripheral to his work. This is understanda-ble given his focus, yet one is left with a very clear impression that such occurrences were extraordinarily rareand insignificant events. More problematic is Dower’s assertion that Americans in decision-making positionswere so singularly unimpressed with the idea of waging a serious propaganda campaign against the Japanesethat “such ideas had little impact.”3 In fact, this is not the case. Psywar was not an afterthought on the part ofAllied military commanders, nor was it always perceived as some ‘’impractical plaything of effete civilians.”4In their attempts to demoralize Japanese troops Allied propagandists in the Southwest Pacific alone dissemi-nated nearly 400 million propaganda leaflets and witnessed the capture of approximately 19,500 Japanese pri-soners.

How well are you willing to bee?: A beginners's ''auto'' fix it guide - PDF
نویسندگان: Pat Wagner خلاصه: The contents of this guide are intended to give the reader knowledge ofsome alternatives to the manner in which he/she may view the treatment of aspecified illness. Although a variety of choices exists, the hope is that this bookmay enlighten you about some new, yet very old, ways to get better. Did thatsuper heart medication, digitalis, not come from the foxglove plant? Sure it did.Do you know where aspirin originated? It was in the willow tree. Even thebuffering agent now used in aspirin comes from that same willow tree. Whatelse does nature have to offer? This is something many of us are now asking andwe are getting answers, too. Why do so many of us use things that just mask aproblem? A bandage can help protect a scratch from further harm, but why notuse something to aid the healing process before you apply the bandage? Well, did you know that raw honey is one of the most sterile topical ointments youcould use? When used on a scratch or burn, for example, it actually assists inspeeding the healing process. Of course, honey is good on piping hot biscuits, too! However, that's another story. What else can we learn about natural healing? It's not invasive to ourbodies. It does not require a whole new way of living, but it can give you one.The cost is affordable. The "feel good" feeling is natural, not synthetic. Thedocumentation about the powers of natural healing has been handed down forthousands of years. The Bible speaks often of the benefits of honey and propolis.Since the time of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, there is evidence of theuse of apitherapy (the therapeutic use of bee products). The Chinese have usedherbs, bees, and other natural means of healing for hundreds of centuries. Doyou realize that money has not been an issue when dealing with these ways ofhealing? Only when mankind starts to "fool with Mother Nature" does the wal-let become an important factor.Remember when you would fall down and Mom could simply kiss it andmake it all better? Of course the bad knee scrapes sometimes needed a Band-Aid. Now, for instance, many of us feel we need to 'see a doctor' for a hurt knee. What do we get? Perhaps it will be a cortisone shot. Ouch!! Your body pro-duces cortisol, so why not use it instead? Because we don't know how, right?Well, let's start learning, saving money, and getting better. First, learn whatKISS can really mean: Keep It Simple, Sweetheart!

Residents' Teaching Skills (Springer Series on Medical Education) - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Janine Edward, Joan Friedland, Robert Bing-You خلاصه: After a 2-year stint as a research fellow in nephrology, I returned to BostonCity Hospital in order to complete my 3rd year of internal medicine residen-cy. During the course of my fellowship, I'd done research on acid-basedisorders—an area that most medical students and residents find very con-fusing. Because of my research experience, the faculty and attendings as-sumed that I could teach this arcane subject to my peers and to our medicalstudents. With no training whatsoever in teaching (yes, even as a 3rd-yearresident!), I was assigned the task of putting together a lecture/seminar se-ries. To this day, I'm not sure whom the experience was worse for: theanxious, utterly unprepared "instructor" (me), or the learners, who probablygot very little satisfactory instruction from the seminar despite my mostearnest efforts.Does this sound familiar? It's an experience that nearly all of us have hadat some point during our residency: the sudden, sickening realization thatwe're going to be expected not only to care for patients, but to teach themedical students that we all too recently were ourselves. And we have abso-lutely no idea what to do. For more than a few residents, a crashing patientin the emergency room may be a lot less daunting than a clutch of earnestmedical students following in their wake and waiting for their wisdom.Traditionally, medical residents have not received the formal preparationthat is essential to the transition from full-time learner to at least part-timeteacher. Although many residents make that transition successfully through asort of osmosis, many more do not, and they remain ineffective teachersthroughout their residencies. With some estimates indicating that residentsare responsible for as much as 80% of student teaching, this is clearly anuntenable situation for medical education. Nor is it permissible according tothe standards of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which statethat "Residents must be fully informed about the educational objectives ofthe clerkships and be prepared for their roles as teachers and evaluators ofmedical students.

Retire Secure!: Pay Taxes Later The Key to Making Your Money Last as Long as You Do - Original PDF
نویسندگان: James Lange خلاصه: Retire Secure! is written for consumers and advisors who wor-ry about these essential questions: “Will I have enough incomewhen I retire?” and “Will it last as long as I might?” These ques-tions might have additional significance for the wife of a maleretiree because she is statistically likely to survive her husband.Jim has properly identified the three stages of retirementplanning: accumulation, distribution, and estate planning, andreaders will fi nd the organization extremely helpful. They canquickly place themselves along the continuum of the retirementprocess and fi nd excellent recommendations for each stage oftheir journey.Understanding the implications of various retirement plan-ning decisions requires looking at the numbers. There is no get-ting around that. Comparing and contrasting different optionsguides the consumer into making the right choices. Jim takes allthe work out of this by providing numerous comparisons. Gradu-ally the reader is educated and informed—and making the rightchoices becomes easier. An important issue is, “Which account (Roth, IRA, 401(k),403(b), after tax, etc.) is the best to make withdrawals from first?”This is very clearly addressed in the book despite the fact that theexplanation cannot be simple or the response universal. It de-pends on an individual’s particular circumstances, and Jim avoidsgiving the reader the simplified, and often wrong, answer. The mini case studies are a real eye-opener for all readers, both consumers and financial advisors, because they mathemati-cally prove Jim’s assertions. Each comparison and mini case studyis based on several assumptions, which Jim is careful to point outin a clear fashion. I particularly enjoyed Mini Case Study 5.2about the disastrous execution of beneficiary forms and the deci-sion of Junior not to sue the careless estate administrator—hismother
