I Am You: The Metaphysical Foundations for Global Ethics - PDF
نویسندگان: Daniel Kolak خلاصه: Borders enclose and separate us. We assign to them tremendous significance. Along them we draw supposedly uncrossable boundaries within which we believe our individual identities begin and end, erecting the metaphysical dividing walls that enclose each one of us into numerically identical, numerically distinct, entities: persons. Do the borders between us—physical, psychological, neurological, causal, spatial, temporal, etc.—merit the metaphysical significance ordinarily accorded them? The central thesis of I Am You is that our borders do not signify boundaries between persons. We are all the same person. Variations on this heretical theme have been voiced periodically throughout the ages (the Upanishads, Averroës, Giordano Bruno, Josiah Royce, Schrödinger, Fred Hoyle, Freeman Dyson). In presenting his arguments, the author relies on detailed analyses of recent formal work on personal identity, especially that of Derek Parfit, Sydney Shoemaker, Robert Nozick, David Wiggins, Daniel C. Dennett and Thomas Nagel, while incorporating the views of Descartes, Leibniz, Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer, Kant, Husserl and Brouwer. His development of the implied moral theory is inspired by, and draws on, Rawls, Sidgwick, Kant and again Parfit. The traditional, commonsense view that we are each a separate person numerically identical to ourselves over time, i.e., that personal identity is closed under known individuating and identifying borders—what the author calls Closed Individualism—is shown to be incoherent. The demonstration that personal identity is not closed but open points collectively in one of two new directions: either there are no continuously existing, self-identical persons over time in the sense ordinarily understood—the sort of view developed by philosophers as diverse as Buddha, Hume and most recently Derek Parfit, what the author calls Empty Individualism—or else you are everyone, i.e., personal identity is not closed under known individuating and identifying borders, what the author calls Open Individualism. In making his case, the author:

The Best Places You've Never Seen: Pennsylvania's Small Museums, A Traveler's Guide - PDF
نویسندگان: Therese Boyd خلاصه: You know the Carnegie Institute and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but have you ever visited the Toy Robot Museum in Adamstown or Bill's Old Bike Barn in Bloomsburg? The Tom Mix Museum in Mix Run? The Houdini Museum in Scranton? Pennsylvania's many small museums are easy to miss in an age of instant information and superhighways. After reading Therese Boyd's guide, however, you'll rush to get off the beaten track to find them. Pennsylvania's little wonders are as entertaining as they are educational. Unlike large museums, which display masterpieces of art and other 'important' items, small museums feature objects that would otherwise be thrown away and forgotten everything from spittoons to high button shoes and trolley cars. Some small museums, such as the Richard Allen Museum, serve a serious purpose; others are playful, even eccentric. All offer a fresh perspective on how people have lived and worked. Of the hundreds of small museums throughout Pennsylvania, Boyd concentrates on forty-two she considers well worth a detour. These range from Kready's Museum, where visitors can savor the simple pleasures of a country store, to the Vocal Groups Hall of Fame and Museum, where music fans can listen to 'golden oldies' and pore over memorabilia (including sequined dresses once worn by the Supremes). Boyd's book is a comprehensive, illustrated guide to the best small museums in Pennsylvania. It weaves amusing anecdotes about Boyd's own visits to the museums along with descriptions of their histories and collections. Her guide provides travel directions as well as complete information about each museum's visiting hours, Website, and contact information.

نویسندگان: Lisa Gardner خلاصه: Who do you love? It‟s a question anyone should be able to answer. A question that defines a life, creates afuture, guides most minutes of one‟s days. Simple, elegant, encompassing.Who do you love?He asked the question, and I felt the answer in the weight of my duty belt, the constrictiveconfines of my armored vest, the tight brim of my trooper‟s hat, pulled low over my brow. Ireached down slowly, my fingers just brushing the top of my Sig Sauer, holstered at my hip.“Who do you love?” he cried again, louder now, more insistent. My fingers bypassed my state-issued weapon, finding the black leather keeper that heldmy duty belt to my waist. The Velcro rasped loudly as I unfastened the first band, then thesecond, third, fourth. I worked the metal buckle, then my twenty pound duty belt, complete withmy sidearm, Taser, and collapsible steel baton released from my waist and dangled in the spacebetween us.“Don‟t do this,” I whispered, one last shot at reason. He merely smiled. “Too little, too late.”“Where‟s Sophie? What did you do?”“Belt. On the table. Now.”“No.”“GUN. On the table. NOW!”In response, I widened my stance, squaring off in the middle of the kitchen, duty belt stillsuspended from my left hand. Four years of my life, patrolling the highways of Massachusetts, swearing to defend and protect. I had training and experience on my side.I could go for my gun. Commit to the act, grab the Sig Sauer, and start shooting.Sig Sauer was holstered at an awkward angle that would cost me precious seconds. Hewas watching, waiting for any sudden movement. Failure would be firmly and terribly punished.Who do you love?He was right. That‟s what it came down to in the end. Who did you love and how muchwould you risk for them?“GUN!” he boomed. “Now, dammit!”I thought of my six-year-old daughter, the scent of her hair, the feel of her skinny armswrapped tight around my neck, the sound of her voice as I tucked her in bed each night. “Loveyou, Mommy,” she always whispered.Love you, too, baby. Love you.His arm moved, first tentative stretch for the suspended duty belt, my holstered weapon. One last chance …I looked my husband in the eye. A single heartbeat of time.Who do you love?I made my decision. I set down my trooper‟s belt on the kitchen table. And he grabbed my Sig Sauer and opened fire.
