You Never Forget Your First: Ballplayers Recall Their Big League Debuts - PDF
نویسندگان: Josh Lewin خلاصه: Having already penned Getting in the Game, his inside scoop on the mayhem within baseball's winter meetings, Josh Lewin once again gives baseball fans a window into the big leagues. By interviewing big league ballplayers about their first day in the majors, Lewin creates fascinating mini-biographies of the players, highlighting the personalities hidden behind the on-field accomplishments. He lets the players recount their own memories of how they made it to the big leagues. In You Never Forget Your First, Lewin shares the stories of players great and less so. Tony Gwynn recalls singling in his first at bat and finding Pete Rose waiting for him at first base with a wink and a warning: "Don't break my record all at once, kid." Bob Brenly heard of his call-up on the car radio while on a family trip to the Grand Canyon. He then stood helplessly in the middle of the Arizona desert after his transmission gave out, trying to convince passersby he was a ballplayer heading to the big leagues and needed a lift to the airport. Duane Kuiper witnessed a fight both on the field and in his own clubhouse his first day in Cleveland. Greg Maddux recalls being stuck at the Chicago River drawbridge, convinced he'd never make it to Wrigley Field in time for his debut.Lewin interviews modern star players such as A-Rod, Barry Bonds, and Manny Ramirez, as well as Hall of Famers such as Jim Palmer, Don Sutton, and George Brett. More than 100 popular baseball players are profiled, complete with the box scores of their big league debuts.

And did you say byproducts, reject products, surplus, waste, excretion, excrement or shit?"Her husband, hanging upside down from the exercise bar, shrugged. "I don't remember. You Shall Know Our Velocity (Vintage) - PDF
نویسندگان: Dave Eggers خلاصه: Everything within takes place after Jack died, and before my mom and I drownedin a burning ferry in the cool tannin-tinted Guaviare River, in east-central Columbia, withforty-two locals we hadn't yet met. It was a clear and eyeblue day, that day, as was thefirst day of this story, a few years ago in January, on Chicago's north side, in the opulentshadow of Wrigley and with the wind coming low and searching off the jagged half-frozen lake. I was inside, very warm, walking from door to door.I was talking to Hand, one of my two best friends, the one still alive, and we wereplanning to leave. At this point there were good days, good weeks, when we pretendedthat it was acceptable that Jack had lived at all, that his life had been, in its truncated way, complete. This wasn't one of those days. I was pacing and Hand knew I was pacing andknew what it meant. I paced like this when figuring or planning, and rolled my knuckles, and snapped my fingers softly and without rhythm, and walked from the western edge ofthe apartment, where I would lock and unlock the front door, and then east, to the backdeck's glass sliding door, which I opened quickly, thrust my head through and shut again.Hand could hear the quiet roar of the door moving back and forth on its rail, but saidnothing. The air was arctic and it was Friday afternoon and I was home, in the new blueflannel pajama pants I wore most days then, indoors or out. A stupid and nervous bird thecolor of feces fluttered to the feeder over the deck and ate the ugly mixed seeds I'd put inthere for no reason and lately regretted -- these birds would die in days and I didn't wantto watch their flight or demise. This building warmed itself without regularity orequitable distribution to its corners, and my apartment, on the rear left upper edge, got itsheat rarely and in bursts. Jack was twenty-six and died five months before and now Handand I would leave for a while. I had my ass beaten two weeks ago by three shadows in astorage unit in Oconomowoc -- it had nothing to do with Jack or anything else, really, ormaybe it did, maybe it was distantly Jack's fault and immediately Hand's -- and we had toleave for a while. I had scabs on my face and back and a rough pear-shaped bump on thecrown of my head and I had this money that had to be disseminated and so Hand and Iwould leave. My head was a condemned church with a ceiling of bats but I swung fromthis dark mood to euphoria when I thought about leaving.
DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS OF WORLD WAR II - PDF
DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS OF WORLD WAR II - PDF
نویسندگان: James F. Dunnigan خلاصه: This is not a history of World War II , but revelations about many of thelesser-known details. Because it is a book of facts, you don't read itfrom beginning to end, but rather you jump in wherever it strikes yourfancy. There are over three hundred separate items, each a completestory in itself. As a rule, much of the information found in one section of the bookwill usually also be applicable to the others as well. After all, althoughaircraft carriers are inseparably associated with the Pacific war, theyalso performed yeoman service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, while the problems of troop transport transcended theater. After reading this book, you'll never look at World War II the sameway again. We have not changed the story of that conflict; we areproviding information about it that is not generally known. We oftenlook at the same subject from several different angles, giving you abetter appreciation of, for example, how a blitzkrieg was conducted, what it took to supply partisans, and why the U.S. Army had moreships than the U.S. Navy.World War II was the most enormous human drama in history. Noone volume could ever really come close to examining all of theunusual, and often important, aspects of this, history's greatest war. Somuch has had to be left out, from the drama of Dunkirk to the U.S.Navy's coal-burning, paddle-wheel aircraft carriers on the Great Lakes;from the Marine Corps's Navaho communications specialists to the12 INTRODUCTIONJapanese Navy's "American" pilots; not to mention the improbableadventures of FDR's son, the extraordinary antiarmor tactics of theFinns, and the secret missions of Harry Hopkins. Also left out are manyinteresting items from the "secondary" theaters such as China, Burma,Finland, and the Middle East. Moreover, the end of the Cold War hasthrown open the Soviet World War II archives. Much fascinating ma-terial is coming out. We were shown a volume (in Russian) of some ofthe newly revealed material already being published in Russia andrealized that we could have added several dozen pages of previouslyunknown goodies for this book from that one Russian volume alone.Well, if we sell enough copies of this book, there may be more. Wecertainly have enough to fill several more volumes. This book undoubtedly displays an "American" bias. This is nat-ural, given the audience. Without much difficulty the authors couldproduce a book of similar length with a "British" or "German" or"Chinese" bias which, while being somewhat repetitive, would stillmanage to include a lot of unusual and interesting material. World War II was the most enormous human drama in history, and there is farmore to be told about it than can possibly be included between thecovers of a single book.
