Combinatorial Optimization — Eureka, You Shrink!: Papers Dedicated to Jack Edmonds 5th International Workshop Aussois, France, March 5–9, 2001 Revised Papers - PDF
نویسندگان: Michael Jünger, Gerhard Reinelt, Giovanni Rinaldi (eds.) خلاصه: This book is dedicated to Jack Edmonds in appreciation of his ground breaking work that laid the foundations for a broad variety of subsequent results achieved in combinatorial optimization. The main part consists of 13 revised full papers on current topics in combinatorial optimization, presented at Aussois 2001, the Fifth Aussois Workshop on Combinatorial Optimization, March 5-9, 2001, and dedicated to Jack Edmonds. Additional highlights in this book are an account of an Aussois 2001 special session dedicated to Jack Edmonds including a speech given by William R. Pulleyblank as well as newly typeset versions of three up-to-now hardly accessible classical papers: - Submodular Functions, Matroids, and Certain Polyhedra by Jack Edmonds - Matching: A Well-Solved Class of Integer Linear Programs by Jack Edmonds and Ellis L. Johnson - Theoretical Improvements in Algorithmic Efficiency for Network Flow Problems by Jack Edmonds and Richard M. Karp.

50 Things You're Not Supposed to Know - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Russ Kick خلاصه: Russ Kick has proved himself a master at uncovering facts that ''they'' would prefer you never hear about. The giant Disinformation Guide series edited by Kick has become the definitive place to find revelations about government cover-ups, scientific scams, corporate crimes, medical malfeasance, historical whitewashes, media manipulation, and other knock-your-socks-off secrets and lies. This CD-sized book packs the same powerful punch in a small, attractive package. Among Kick's amazing discoveries, all thoroughly documented: The first genetically modified humans have already been born. Hitler's blood relatives are living in the U.S. The CIA commits over 100,000 serious crimes per year. The U.S. planned to explode an atomic bomb on the moon. An atomic bomb was dropped on North Carolina. The main hero of the movie Black Hawk Down is a convicted child molester. The discoverer of HIV no longer believes the virus is the sole cause of AIDS. Kent State wasn't the only massacre of U.S. college students during the Vietnam era. Lincoln didn't free any slaves. A uniquely valuable tool to debunk modern mythology and the people and institutions serving it up, 50 Things You're Not Supposed To Know makes an amazing gift item and will prove just as essential in fashionable bathrooms as on the most well-heeled coffee tables.
The Software Conspiracy: Why Companies Put Out Faulty Software, How They Can Hurt You and What You Can Do About It - Original PDF
The Software Conspiracy: Why Companies Put Out Faulty Software, How They Can Hurt You and What You Can Do About It - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Mark Minasi خلاصه: A world-renowned technology expert reveals the true cost to business and society created by little-known problems rife within the software industry. Software kills? Yes. Industry insider Mark Minasi argues that it routinely destroys millions of work hours, files, deals, and ideas. Most of us are familiar with conputer problems, but how many realize that software victims also include people: a 7 year-old killed by bad fuel-injection software in a Chevrolet in Alabama, 28 U.S. Marines lost to a missile-chip malfunction, 200 people on a flight to Guam blown to bits when an altitude warning device failed. Minasi believes it's time to get mad at the industry that allows such things to happen. From his unique vantage point, he delivers an incisive and highly readable expose that calls computer makers and consumers to account. He reveals how companies inexcusably get away with thumbing their nose at quality, and tells what all of us can do to stop it.
The Real Price of War: How You Pay for the War on Terror - Original PDF
The Real Price of War: How You Pay for the War on Terror - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Joshua S. Goldstein خلاصه: Are Americans in denial about the costs of the War on Terror? In The Real Price of War, Joshua S. Goldstein argues that we need to face up to what the war costs the average American—both in taxes and in changes to our way of life. Goldstein contends that in order to protect the United States from future attacks, we must fight—and win—the War on Terror. Yet even as President Bush campaigns on promises of national security, his administration is cutting taxes and increasing deficit spending, resulting in too little money to eradicate terrorism and a crippling burden of national debt for future generations to pay. The Real Price of War breaks down billion-dollar government expenditures into the prices individual Americans are paying through their taxes. Goldstein estimates that the average American household currently pays $500 each month to finance war. Beyond the dollars and cents that finance military operations and increased security within the U.S., the War on Terror also costs America in less tangible ways, including lost lives, reduced revenue from international travelers, and budget pressures on local governments. The longer the war continues, the greater these costs. In order to win the war faster, Goldstein argues for an increase in war funding, at a cost of about $100 per household per month, to better fund military spending, homeland security, and foreign aid and diplomacy. Americans have been told that the War on Terror is a war without sacrifice. But as Goldstein emphatically states: "These truths should be self-evident: The nation is at war. The war is expensive. Someone has to pay for it."

You Have to Admit It's Getting Better: From Economic Prosperity to Environmental Quality - PDF
You Have to Admit It's Getting Better: From Economic Prosperity to Environmental Quality - PDF
نویسندگان: Terry L. Anderson خلاصه: To the doomsayers who maintain that natural resources are being depleted and the environment is getting worse, Terry Anderson and his fellow contributors offer a bold retort: it's getting better all the time. They present a powerful argument that, through such established institutions as property rights, the rules of law, and limited government, economic growth and environmental quality will both flourish. You Have to Admit It's Getting Better shows how, by focusing our energies on developing and protecting the institutions of freedom, rather than on regulating human use of natural resources through political processes, we can in fact have our environmental cake and eat it, too. The book offers a number of often-surprising revelations that debunk many commonly held beliefs about the future of our environment. It shows, for example, how liberalization of international trade is more likely to improve environmental quality than reduce it. It also explains how the prosperity and improved human well-being that we enjoy today are not leaving future generations worse off, but leaving them with more capital and larger stocks of natural resources. Throughout the book, the authors repeatedly show that economic growth is not the antithesis of environmental quality: rather, the two go hand in hand if the incentives are right.

Looks - Why They Matter More Than You Ever Imagined - PDF
نویسندگان: Gordon Patzer Ph.D خلاصه: We all know one hard and undeniable truth: Physical beauty comes with tremendous power, and tremendous benefits. Those who possess it are generally luckier in love, more likely to be popular, and more apt to get better grades in school. But very few of us realize just how much looks affect every aspect of our lives. Recent studies document that people blessed with good looks earn about 10% more than their average-looking colleagues. They are also more likely to get hired and promoted at work. What exactly is this "physical attractiveness" phenomenon and how does it affect each and every one of us? Dr. Gordon L. Patzer has devoted the last 30 years to investigating this unsettling phenomenon for both women and men, and how it touches every part of our lives. In Looks, he reveals not only its impact on romance, but also on family dynamics, performance in school, career, courtroom proceedings, politics and government. Looks is the first book to explore how the power of beauty affects both sexes and how the rise of reality TV shows, cosmetic surgery, and celebrity culture have contributed to our culture’s overall obsession with being beautiful. Unflinching and topical, Looks uncovers the sometimes ugly truth about beauty and its profound effects on all our lives.
