Problems and defects of all kinds arise in the development and use of mechanical devices, electrical equipment, hydraulic systems, transportation mechanisms and the like. Nondestructive testing (NDT), which produces no alteration of the part being tested,
is concerned with a very wide range of practical problems, from troubleshooting to the
most sophisticated characterizations of materials and systems behavior. It is useful for
the skilled technician from industry, research manager, factory supervisor, engineer
from an industrial laboratory, university or research institute, or from a government
quality control background, to have available a detailed review covering:
The basic principles of the many NDT methods, many well-established, others very
new and highly specialized
A wide ranging set of examples to provide ideas on how to proceed in the
investigation of a particular NDT problem
Many of the same NDT methods are used in the authentication of art objects, in
forensic studies, and in biological and medical fields.
The different NDT methods are dealt with in separate chapters, so that each chapter
is complete in itself. The most important and frequently used methods are:
Radiography in Chapter II
Ultrasonic testing in Chapter III
Liquid penetrant inspection in Chapter IV
Magnetic particle inspection in Chapter V
Eddy current inspection in Chapter VI
Each of the Chapters II to VIis presented in two or three parts:
Part I covers the outline of the method and its application.
Part II is concerned with technical discussions of the derivation and explanation of
the science involved, with the necessary theory.
Part III, in some chapters, covers applications and typical calculations.
In general, the reader will wish to use Parts I and III, and only consider Part II for
more basic information. There is a companion book in this series on Visual Inspection
by R'C, Anderson which covers this technique in a most useful way (Ref 285).
