The Near Eastern dispute of 1853 was the first international crisis to occur after the electric telegraph had connected most major European capitals. Governments did not successfully manage the crisis, which led to the Crimean War and the most significant bloodletting between European powers in four decades. The war proved traumatic for both Britain and Russia, two pillars of the post-1815 European political system. Thereafter, the former entered a period of isolationism while the latter pursued a revisionist course aimed at disrupting the status quo. The changed policies of these two countries contributed to a decline in support for the existing European order. The results included several wars among the three remaining powers—France, Austria-Hungary, and Prussia—and the formation of Italy and Germany.
