e approach this study from a social constructionist perspective in which rela- tionship patterns are seen as ongoing phenomena, constructed and reconstructed through daily interactions (Gergen 2009). Although marital interaction is highly influenced by the options available within a given societal context, we believe that partners also have the potential to create and modify how they perform gender and culture in their lives. As such, elements of social harmony and self-directedness are likely to be in flux. To maintain traditional social harmony, individuals interact in prescribed ways that minimize direct conflict and social discord (Hsiung and Ferrans 2007). Communication flows downward from superior to subordinate, and roles are informed by family membership, social position, gender, age, and social status rather than qualification and ability. Therefore, the husband performs as head of the household but still shows deference and loyalty to his father and older brothers. The wife–mother acts as the relational link between her husband and children and typically defers to her husband for major and public decisions. Social sensitivity and other-directedness are vital to maintaining social harmony (Glicken 2006). Self-directedness tends to be valued in the Euro–American cultural context and reportedly contributes to life satisfaction (Kwan et al. 1997). Self-directed persons rely on their own judgment in choosing a course of action. They value expression of one’s opinions, thinking for oneself, self-reliance, and achievement of one’s goals (Hofstede 2001). Persons who strongly endorse self-directedness typically hold less traditional attitudes toward marital roles than those who value social harmony (Triandis 1995)

این مطالعه را از دیدگاه ساخت‌گرای اجتماعی که در آن الگوهای روابط به‌عنوان پدیده‌های جاری در نظر گرفته می‌شوند، از طریق تعاملات روزانه ساخته و بازسازی می‌شوند (گرگن 2009) رویکرد می‌کنیم. اگرچه تعامل زناشویی به شدت تحت تأثیر گزینه های موجود در یک بافت اجتماعی معین است، ما معتقدیم که شرکا نیز پتانسیل ایجاد و تغییر نحوه عملکرد جنسیت و فرهنگ را در زندگی خود دارند. به این ترتیب، عناصر هماهنگی اجتماعی و خودراهبری احتمالاً در جریان هستند. برای حفظ هماهنگی اجتماعی سنتی، افراد به روش های تجویز شده ای با هم تعامل می کنند که درگیری مستقیم و اختلاف اجتماعی را به حداقل می رساند (هسیونگ و فرانس 2007). ارتباطات از مافوق به زیردست به سمت پایین جریان می یابد و نقش ها بر اساس عضویت در خانواده، موقعیت اجتماعی، جنسیت، سن و موقعیت اجتماعی به جای شایستگی و توانایی مشخص می شود. بنابراین، شوهر به عنوان سرپرست خانواده عمل می کند، اما همچنان نسبت به پدر و برادران بزرگتر خود احترام و وفاداری نشان می دهد. زن-مادر به‌عنوان رابط رابطه‌ای بین شوهر و فرزندانش عمل می‌کند و معمولاً برای تصمیم‌گیری‌های اصلی و عمومی به همسرش معطل می‌شود. حساسیت اجتماعی و دیگر جهت گیری برای حفظ هماهنگی اجتماعی حیاتی است (گلیکن 2006). خودراهبری در بافت فرهنگی اروپا-آمریکایی ارزش قائل است و گزارش شده که به رضایت از زندگی کمک می کند (کوان و همکاران 1997). افراد خودراهبر در انتخاب مسیر عمل بر قضاوت خود تکیه می کنند. آنها برای بیان نظرات، تفکر برای خود، اتکا به خود و دستیابی به اهداف ارزش قائل هستند (هافستد 2001). افرادی که قویاً خودراهبری را تأیید می کنند، معمولاً نسبت به افرادی که برای هماهنگی اجتماعی ارزش قائل هستند، نگرش سنتی کمتری نسبت به نقش های زناشویی دارند (Triandis 1995)
