این کتاب که در ابتدا در سال 1963 منتشر شد، اولین کتابی بود که مشکل حمل و نقل روستایی را به طور کلی بررسی کرد و شامل نتایج تحقیقات گسترده در زمینه مهم اما تا آن زمان مغفول مانده است. مسائل افزایش مالکیت خودرو و کاهش خدمات قطار و اتوبوس و تأثیر اجتماعی این موضوع مورد بحث قرار گرفته است و همچنین مسئله یارانه ها در کل بریتانیا مورد بحث قرار گرفته است. سه مطالعه منطقه خاص با ناحیه دریاچه، نورثامبرلند و دوون سروکار دارند.
