1 SECTION I The Opening Dialogue: Identifying the Holy Elephant in the Counseling Room Multicultural diversity has become increasingly prevalent in the United States. As mental health providers, we can expect the same growth in diversity amongst our clientele. This book will address a particular area of diversity, specifically that of religious faith, doctrine, and values. The first two chapters of the book will provide a foundation highlighting the relevance of this topic in the work of mental health professionals. The first chapter will provide a brief overview of how religion has been embraced within the field of mental health, as well as how religious beliefs affect the culture of America. Finally, recent statistics related to religious diversity and the importance of religion within the lives of persons living in America is presented. In chapter two, Worthington and his colleagues introduce issues related to how the mental health practitioner’s religious beliefs and commitment might effect therapeutic decisions and relationship. In addition, the authors discuss ways in which client factors impact the therapeutic relationship. The goal of the first two chapters is to prepare mental health practitioners to be aware of and able to “identify the holy elephant in the counseling room.” What follows in the book is information about particular religious faith perspectives, as well as ideas about how to actually work inside the counseling room, and in the counseling community at large
