N DORIS LESSING'S story "Out of the Fountain;' Ephraim, a master diamond cutter, is summoned by a wealthy merchant to cut a diamond for the merchant's daughter, Mihrene. When the job is completed the merchant invites Ephraim to join his family for dinner. At dinner, Mihrene sits by her fiance's side, wearing a string of costume pearls, as is the fad of the time. The diamond cutter is struck by her beauty and grace and dismayed by the costume pearls. Twice he asks in a voice "rough with complaint" why she wears them. After the dinner, Ephraim spends days searching for a single perfect pearl. When he has found it, he returns to the mer- chant's home and, after a second dinner, presents the daughter with the pearl, saying in a harsh voice that she shouldn't wear false pearls. Soon after the dinner, the daughter breaks her engagement. Against her parents' wishes she marries a revolutionary with no money, whom she considers a hero. Ephraim and Mihrene do not meet again for many years. They have both survived the war, but Mihrene's hero and her first child have died.
