Psychoanalytic couple therapy dates back sixty-five years to the founding of the pioneering Family Discussion Bureau by Enid Balint and her colleagues, an entity that gave rise to the Insti- tute of Marital Studies, and continues to break new ground in clinical innovation and research, now under its current banner, Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR). As young psychiatrists in training at the Tavistock Centre forty years ago, we were inspired by colleagues at the clinic and at the institute—Henry Dicks, Henry Ezriel, Bob Gosling, Hyatt Williams, Sally Box, and Anton Obholzer. Twenty years ago, with a group of American colleagues, we founded the International Psychotherapy Institute (IPI) in Washington DC, USA, a psychoana- lytic learning community, and invited our valued British colleagues to teach and learn with us there. In 2008 David E. Scharff introduced the idea for a course in psychoanalytic couple therapy in collaboration between IPI and TCCR. David Hewison of TCCR, Janine Wanlass of IPI and David E. Scharff designed and implemented the first offering of the course. Later, Christel Buss-Twachtmann took over the leadership of the course at TCCR, and, since her retirement, Catriona Wrottesley stepped in. The partnership has now expanded to include sponsorship and participation by the British Society of Couple Psychotherapists and Counsellors (BSCPC), currently chaired by Liz Hamlin.
