This book deals with experimental research conducted by our team in an attempt to establish the validity of a working hypothesis derived from the models offered by cybernetics and communication theory. This hypothesis is, that the family is a self-regulating system which controls itself according to rules formed over a period of time through a process of trial and error. The central idea of this hypothesis is that every natural- group-with-history, of which the family is a fundamental example (work teams, spontaneous communities, and man- agerial groups are others), comes to exist through a period of time through a series of transactions and corrective feedbacks. These assay what is permitted and what is not permitted in the relationship, until the natural group becomes a systemic unit held together by rules peculiar to it alone. These rules are related to the transactions which occur in the natural group, transactions which have the quality of communication, whether on the verbal or nonverbal level. In fact, according to the axioms of Pragmatics of Human Communication (Watzlawick, Beavin, and Jackson 1967) every behavior is a communication which, in its turn, automatically provokes a feedback consisting of another behavior-communication.

این کتاب با تحقیقات تجربی انجام شده توسط تیم ما در تلاش برای ایجاد اعتبار یک فرضیه کاری برگرفته از مدل‌های ارائه شده توسط سایبرنتیک و نظریه ارتباطات می‌پردازد. این فرضیه این است که خانواده یک سیستم خودتنظیمی است که بر اساس قوانینی که در یک دوره زمانی از طریق فرآیند آزمون و خطا شکل گرفته است، خود را کنترل می کند. ایده اصلی این فرضیه این است که هر گروه طبیعی با تاریخ، که خانواده نمونه‌ای اساسی از آن است (تیم‌های کاری، اجتماعات خودجوش و گروه‌های مدیریتی دیگران هستند)، در طول یک دوره زمانی و از طریق یک سری معاملات و بازخوردهای اصلاحی اینها موارد مجاز و غیرمجاز را در رابطه مورد سنجش قرار می دهند تا زمانی که گروه طبیعی به یک واحد سیستمی تبدیل شود که توسط قوانین خاص خود به تنهایی حفظ شده است. این قواعد مربوط به معاملاتی است که در گروه طبیعی اتفاق می‌افتد، معاملاتی که کیفیت ارتباط را دارند، چه در سطح کلامی یا غیرکلامی. در واقع، طبق اصول پراگماتیک ارتباطات انسانی (واتزلاویک، بیوین و جکسون 1967) هر رفتاری ارتباطی است که به نوبه خود، به طور خودکار بازخوردی متشکل از رفتار-ارتباطات دیگر را برمی انگیزد.
