TJL HIS IS A BOOK that evolved the way ancient cities did. It started with a happy confluence of features and proceeded by a mixture of hopeful planning and serendipitous design. Luigi Boscolo and Gianfranco Cecchin came to Peggy Penn and myself in 1982 and asked if we would help them write a book. We thought of an interview book along the lines of the one Jay Haley and I did in 1969 (Techniques of Family Therapy); they readily agreed. We felt that the collaboration would have an informal usefulness in extending the relationship we had already established with Boscolo and Cecchin. In addition, the work of Boscolo and Cecchin was becoming more and more influential. They were presenting their evolving model at workshops here and abroad. However, they had produced almost no written expli¬ cations of their newer ideas. As a result, there seemed to us to be a hole in the field, and we were anxious to see that hole filled.
