A master class in family therapy--now updated with an additional ten years' case experienceFew people have had as profound an impact on the theory and practice of family therapy as Salvador Minuchin. This new edition of the classic, Mastering Family Therapy, offers beginners and experienced practitioners alike the opportunity to learn the art and science of family therapy under this pioneering clinician and teacher. In elegant clinical interplays, Minuchin, his colleagues Wai-Yung Lee and George Simon, and eight advanced students provide answers to such critical questions as:* What does it take to master the art of family therapy?* How do I create an effective personal style?* How can I become an instrument for growth for troubled families? This updated Second Edition features:* An overview and critique of new models of treatment in the field, especially evidence-based models of family treatment* New case material highlighting the impact of societal context on families* Minuchin's conceptualization of a four-step process of family assessment, including how history can impact current family functioningA new and thoroughly revised version of the classic text, Mastering Family Therapy, Second Edition is essential reading for all those who practice, study, or teach family therapy.

The Wednesday class, behind the one-way mirror, is attentively watching Gil struggle with David’s family. David, 24 years old, has spent the last year of his life on a psychiatric ward. When the compul- sive rubbing of his eye threatened to leave him blind, there seemed to be no alternative to hospitalization. Gil was, at first, his individual therapist, but for the past 4 months he has been working with David and his parents. During these 4 months, Gil has been presenting videotapes of the therapy to the group. Today for the first time we are observing the fam- ily session “live.” We feel as if we know these people well. We are fa- miliar with the parents’ hovering attention to David. Every detail of his behavior becomes invested with meaning and is a matter of concern to them. He cannot hide. The father, a figure in gray, seems hesitant, pleading to be useful. The mother’s round and jovial face seems always closer to David’s than we, the group members, think necessary. David’s stumbling ex- planations are divided evenly between them; he tries first to satisfy his mother, then his father. It is clear his mission is to please. Gil, a psychologist born and raised in the South, tends to relate to people from a respectful distance. As a therapist, he has a preference for low-key interpretations delivered in a soft voice.
