Literary Horizons starts from the premise that literature is not only a form of artistic expression
but also a means of communication. Language is central to the human experience, and,
regardless of the genre or time period, literary works share the intent to communicate what
it means to be human, in all of its rich variety. Literature has the power to move us because
we can relate to the experiences it evokes, even if those experiences are very different from
our own. When engaging in literary analysis, we gain insight into formal elements, but we
also establish with the text a dialogue that allows us to hone our critical thinking skills as
we uncover deeper meanings and underlying themes. In this way, broadening our literary
horizons transports us and helps us to better know ourselves through reading about others.
By engaging with literature, we recognize what is common and appreciate what is different.
I have designed Literary Horizons with both native language users and advanced language
learners in mind. Through an engaging guided approach applied to a fresh selection of texts
across different genres, the book proposes an accessible college-level introduction to literary
analysis, and supports students as they learn how to present their observations and insights
in speaking and writing formats.
Literature, as a form of language arts, comprises many different forms and genres. Literary
Horizons not only acknowledges but also celebrates this diversity. It presents the traditional
triad of prose, drama and verse in the form of short stories, plays and poems (Parts I–III),
as well as a selection of genres that are less commonly studied: pop songs, spoken word,
graphic novels and speeches (Part IV). Each part is preceded by an Elements of Analysis
section that zooms in on the essential features of the particular genre that follows, and
provides contextualized practice exercises that allow students to tackle their subsequent
analyses with confidence.
To offer maximum flexibility, these four parts can be taken up in any order; they are also
further divided into separate chapters, each of which is based on the same methodological
principles and straightforward underlying structure. This approach offers students anchorage
as they increase their capacity to draw on pertinent techniques and terminology to inform
their analysis. The selection of texts covers a wide variety of themes and vantage points, and
spans Canadian and international content ranging from frequently anthologized classics to
contemporary contributions, including printed material and recorded performances.
At the outset of each chapter, students are invited to Connect with the Text through discussion
and research activities that relate to the work’s subject matter, theme and/or format. A Text
in Context section further introduces students to the material they are about to engage with
by presenting salient sociocultural and historical background information on the author and
the text. These considerations lay the foundation for the work students undertake as they
further their insight into the text and craft their analysis. Three complementary approaches
underpin and structure this process: a first exploratory reading gives students the opportunity
to voice and corroborate their initial insight and take stock of their more subjective reader’s
response. Close reading questions draw attention to specific elements that are significant
